I purchased this book because I have a child with severe anxiety. The first chapter was great! The second chapter spoke about a drug causing serious weight gain, 80 lbs! I can let my daughter read this because she has a history of an eating disorder. Not helpful!!!!

This is an important book. Everyone should read it.

Absolutely amazing.

The authors bear their souls to help others dealing with personal struggles!Thirty-one authors share their experiences in dealing with mental illness within the pages of this book. Maureen Johnson discusses her anxiety and how meditation and slowing down her schedule helped and continues to help her. I like her comparison of anxiety being a stupid monster that doesn’t know anything. Robison Wells discusses mental illness treatments and the mental illnesses he lives with. Lauren Oliver relates her depression to mental stutters; we may all trip up at one time or another. Jennifer L. Armentrout talks about her suicide attempt and suicidal thoughts. Amy Reed shares her experiences with addiction and depression. Aprilynne Pike explains her compulsive behavior. Rachel M. Wilson’s dilemma of OCD and ADHD combined is shared. Dan Wells remembers his grandparents and the dementia and Alzheimer’s they dealt with. Amber Benson shares the gift of therapy and how she believes there’s no difference between having mental health problems or physical health problems; they both need help. E. K. Anderson unravels in poetic form. Sarah Fine is an author and a clinical psychologist. Kelly Fiore-Stultz speaks of addiction and family members. Ellen Hopkins shares her grandson’s story. Scott Neumyer tells all while relaying his message about personal anxiety. Crissa-Jean Chappell discusses her OCD. Francesca Lia Block shares the story of her friend with manic depression. Tara Kelly talks about her anxiety, ADHD and OCD. Kimberly McCreight is an anxious worrier and became a heavy drinker. Megan Kelley Hall has dealt with traumatic health issues her entire life, along with depression. Hannah Moskowitz discusses how mental illnesses are different for everyone. Karen Mahoney tells her story of chronic anxiety and Trichotillomania; she pulls out her eyelashes. Tom Pollock has suicidal thoughts and suffers from bulimia. Cyn Balog tells her experience with body dysmorphic disorder. Melissa Marr talks about her PTSD. Wendy Toliver talks with her sixteen-year-old son about his anxiety, depression and OCD. Cindy L. Rodriguez talks about being a Latina with depression. Candace Ganger describes her anxiety. Sara Zarr shares her experiences of worthlessness. Cynthia Hand talks about her brother’s suicide. Francisco X. Stork talks about loneliness and bipolar disorder. Jessica Burkhart shares her addiction to Xanax. This collection of honest stories will help many people understand and deal with their struggles. With much appreciation for the wisdom and bravery the authors have to share their personal experiences with their readers, I give a standing ovation and 5 stars!* I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration.

Oh boy. This was a great book to read and to start conversations, but it was also hard to read because of the subject matter. I love that so many authors shared their stories and I hope that this book spurs conversations among teens. I hope they see they are not alone. I hope they find themselves sharing their own stories. There isn't any judgement here, it's all very matter of fact. I love that so many of the essays talked about what worked for them and how it won't work for everyone. I love how they advice readers to get help and figure out the method that might work best for them. This book is so powerful - from the number of authors sharing their stories to the range of mental illnesses shared. It's an eye opening read.

I love this book. I enjoyed all the different stories and how each one was different. The struggles that people go through are as different as, how different we look to each other. One person tall while the other person is short. One person's struggles are different for the person next to you.I found some of the stories I like more than the others, some I related to better than others but each story is important. Even though this book does cover many, many much need topics it still made me giggle with funny, witty lines. Cleave writers with power stories.I checked this out from my library.

A powerful collection of essay about mental illness from the perspective of people who have personally experienced or have a loved on who has experienced mental illness. Standout essays included those written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Melissa Marr, Maureen Johnson, and Cindy L. Rodriguez.I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I can't say how much I am thankful for this book! It's great seeing these lovely popular authors share personal stories that can help inspire this generation and hopefully break the stigma on mental illness. As someone who also suffers from mental illness, this was an inspiring!

I have heard many times brown rice is good, so I have been eating it almost 10 years. Compared to white rice, it is not tasty as I grew up eating steamy white rice so many years. At first I lost interest in eating. But now I cook brown rice with carrots, edamame, or daikon, and it taste better.I read before that an American physician, Dr. Anthony J. Sattilaro, who was the President of Philadelphia Methodist Hospital, ate bacon and steak all the time and developed a deadly cancer. He was told he would die in a year or so. Then he learned about a Macrobiotic diet from a hitch hiker. He said, "Cancer is easy to treat. You must change your bad blood to good through diet. Brown rice is the hardiest vegetable, full of energy and nutrients. People eat wrong food that is why they become cancer. The physician ate faithfully, according to the Macrobiotic diet menu for one year. Even he went to parities, he brought brown rice balls. After a year, he became cancer free. After I read the book, titled "Recalled by Life" by Anthony J. Sattilaro with Tom Monte, I was interested in Macrobiotic diet. Then I found "Mayumi's Kitchen--Macrobiotic Cooking for Body and Soul," at a library. It says, "Macrobiotic is a balanced way of eating; it means consuming the foods humans need in order to live in harmony with nature and the universe." Mayumi uses brown rice, vegetables, fruit, a lot of beans, tofu, konbu, dried mushrooms and fish that are very familiar to me. I cooked a few dishes such as Pan-Fried Chickpea-Millet cakes, Soba Salad with Asian-Style Dressing, Chirashi sushi, Avocado Rolls, Steamed Vegetables and miso soup. They are good and I felt more energy. As I haven't eaten meat since I was 7, I didn't have a lot of energy like a meat eater. But I discovered that chick peas satisfied my energy level and fill me up.I also like this cook book because Mayumi cooks for one or two people. As I live alone, I don't like too much left over. I want to eat fresh as possible. Each picture is so beautiful that it gives me a good appetite and Mayumi explains how to cook very easily. Mayumi recommends having a pressure cooker so I ordered it. When I get it, I can cook many other recipes faster and easier. I am going to use this cook book and the pressure cooker the rest of my life. This is the perfect cook book for me. I give Mayumi Nishimura a million thanks.

I am not an expert on macrobiotics, so let me place that disclaimer up front and center. I pre-ordered this book, and just got it yesterday. For the size of this book, there is much to love. The recipes are straightforward, and for the most part do not require ingredients too awfully obscure. There is a particular grain that I would probably have to mail order for (although she does offer substitutes), but the rest of the lists include things I usually have on hand as someone who has already started delving into this way of eating. (Ume plum vinegar, daikon, greens, sesame oils, etc.) I'm excited to try so many of the recipes - the spring rolls, "ja-ja" tofu, salmon soup, the noodle dishes, pressed salads, nori rolls ... I wish I had the book here with me; I could be more specific! You won't find in-depth macrobiotic theory here, for which I'm grateful. If you want to really learn the theory of macrobiotics, I'd recommend Macrobiotics for Dummies, or one of Simon Brown's books on the subject. Here, you find a book that tells a bit about Mayumi and her story, which is nice, but mostly, it's packed with recipes. There are helpful color photos everywhere - of the finished dishes, dishes being prepared, step-by-step instructions, and a lot more. I love the way the sauces/dressings are organized and laid out. First, a double page with a small overhead shot of each sauce, and a description of it and the many ways you can use it. Next page, you'll find the recipes. She's got a nice detox plan in here, as well. I really like how she makes use of leftovers in these menus. No waste, and the food gets used quickly, for optimum nutrition. Some of the recipes are similar to those in other macrobiotics books I own (these are simply mainstays in macrobiotics, such as pressed salads or pickles) but most are different or are variations on the theme. If I had to list one con, it would be that some of the menus may not be practical on a day-to-day basis (at least for working people), such as the multi-course breakfasts. I aim to figure out how to make this work, but without having to heat something up, I'm not sure. I'll get back to you on that. Once I try some of the recipes I'll try to come back and report. But by looks alone, I think Mayumi's Kitchen is a keeper.(Just a note to the publisher: I did see a couple typos, which happens, occasionally, with a first printing. Pickle was misspelled once, and in the ingredients index some text was omitted.) I would not count this as a reason not to buy this book, though.

I haven't cooked anything from this book yet. But I LOVE the layout, photos and recipes. Looks of good recipes that seem to encourage flexible thinking and expantion, especially if you know how to cook.I am looking forward to starting my diet with this book!!

I found myself wanting to change over to a macrobiotic diet but felt intimidated by most macrobiotic cookbooks. A friend who is a macrobiotic chef recommended this book so I bought it. I fell in love with it immediately! The pictures are beautiful and the recipes are so well written. All the food, and I mean ALL the food, has been delicious. The 10-day detox is so great b/c I don't have to think about what to make next - it is laid out perfectly. What I love is that no matter what I make it comes out exactly as it looks in the book, which is very encouraging. Mayumi's seasonings and sauces are right on target. Her tofu mayonnaise is surprisingly better than regular mayo. This book inspires me to eat healthier. The only complaint I have is that I wish there were twice as many recipes. Mayumi, please write another book soon!!!

#30,157 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is an extremely entertaining and often insightful collection by Nobel physicist Richard Feynman drawn from slices of his life experiences. Some might believe that the telling of a physicist’s life would be droll fare for anyone other than a fellow scientist, but in this instance, nothing could be further from the truth.Dr. Feynman’s delight with life shines through everything--nothing gets him down for long. The reasons for this attitude are his ever-present compulsion to learn and discover, his urge to follow his insatiable curiosity (about everything!) wherever it might lead, his willingness to simply state whatever he thinks when asked, and his refusal to always take life so seriously. It is evident that Dr. Feynman has achieved what many can only dream of--living a meaningful and accomplished life while still being able to find absolute joy and fun in so much of how we spend that life. It’s hard to imagine anyone that would not find this an interesting and enjoyable read. Although Dr. Feynman is a physicist, this is not a science book, and the reader really needs nothing in the way of a scientific background to fully enjoy it.The book is divided into five parts corresponding to different parts of the author’s life. Within each part, the stories themselves are rarely more than half a dozen pages long, and none depend on the others. Although I read it cover-to-cover in order, it would be easy to open to any of the stories and read it independently. It is one of those books one could pick up when there are only a few minutes to read. But your experience may be like mine, and you may not want to put it down again!Highly recommended for just about anyone!

We are not often blessed with persons of the amazing intelligence of Richard Feynman. Even someone with just a smattering of science and math can appreciate this Nobel Prize winning, bongo drum playing, safe cracking denizen of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Here was a man of superior intellect who could yet relate to the world around him and who had a curious interest in many facets of human endeavor. That is coupled with obvious tenderness toward his first wife, who dies of TB during the Manhattan Project. Even as Feynman writes about that in tightlipped fashion, his deep love for her and sorrow for the loss comes through. The book is not tightly organized but it is smartly written. Guys like Einstein, Feynman, Carl Sagan will all wrestle from time to time with the non-scientific question of what preceded the Big Bang, if only by asking fleetingly if there is some principle of causation behind it all. Obviously I don't know if God exists or what it all means. But it is hard for me to think that such a towering intellect encased in such a lovely witty and wise person results from mere accident. I'll go no further.

Feynman is a genius. The entire book is full of charming, intelligent, and surprisingly inspiring stories about the "curious character" that was the late, great Richard Feynman. The last chapter is something else entirely: an entire philosophy and ethos of scientific thought rolled into a few pages. I found Feynman's principles and ideals for scientific integrity almost unbelievably precious: to never compromise on experimentation, to never make claims you can't back up with hard evidence, and most importantly, to never fool yourself into thinking that you're more right than you actually are.Although only the scientifically or mathematically trained will understand much about Feynman's actual work, his life philosophy and its implications are something that everyone can benefit from. The world would be a better place if each of us tried to replicate just a little of his intellectual integrity. I almost didn't believe such beautiful, pure intellectual idealism wasn't possible until I read this book.

Richard Feynman is the exact brand of aloof, irreverent, genius that the world needs, at any and every time. This casual telling of myriad anecdotes from Feynman's life is precious and airy, even when dealing with early nuclear secrets, death, and other heavy topics. If you're not sold on buying this book, be sure to watch several of the popular Richard Feynman videos on YouTube. This book is better than any of them. Enjoy.

Very entertaining book. Feynman was famous for taking a fresh, original approach in physics; he was always re-inventing the ideas for himself by thinking them through profoundly, starting from fundamentals. He made great contributions and won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This book is not so much about physics, instead some humorous stories and adventures, which show his fresh, original approach to life. I admire his enthusiasm, his love for adventure, his sparkling personality, his honesty and the clarity of his thought, and his disdain for pretense. The anecdotes give much insight into why Feynman was such a great physicist. If you want learn about physics, with his original approach on full display, his best two books are the famous "Feynman Lectures on Physics" (undergraduate courses at Caltech) and "QED, the Strange Theory of Light and Matter".

A strangely inspiring and provocative book. It's hard to put into words the power of this book. Feynman's personality comes through so strongly that you rage against stupid bureaucrats, you see what it means to be an original thinker uninhibited by orthodoxy, you see one of the best explanations of the difference between genuine science and "cargo cult science" as Feynman calls it. You see one of the best explanations for why the California education system has such troubles, when you read his account of reviewing textbooks for the state. Somehow this book inspires you to be smarter, to be more original, and to be more intellectually honest.

Jung, Buddhism, and the Incarnation of Sophia: Unpublished Writings from the Philosopher of the Soul, by Henry Corbin

Review

“That Henry Corbin was one of the great religious thinkers of the 20th century will be apparent to all who delve into this brilliant collection of his previously unpublished writings on Carl Jung and Buddhism, the gnostic Sophia, and Sufism. Corbin’s insights into the profound roots of Jung’s teachings make this essential reading for those who ponder the ties that bind psychology and spirituality and all the great religious traditions to one another.” (Jeff Zaleski, editor and publisher of Parabola magazine)“Jung, Buddhism, and the Incarnation of Sophia is where two astounding explorers of the inner cosmos, Henri Corbin and Carl Jung, meet in their insights--an intriguing octagon of mirrors surrounding the illuminated soul.” (Chris H. Hardy, Ph.D., author of The Sacred Network, DNA of the Gods)

As a long time student of Jung, Buddhism and Taoism I took a chance, thinking this might be an interesting book, although I knew nothing about French philosopher Henry Corbin (1903-1978) before reading it.Part 1; although based on the writings of Jung about Buddhism and Taoism, it doesn’t add much to the study of any of the subjects, not very insightful or deep exploration of psychology or spirituality, instead mostly a rambling and wordy rehashing of what Jung originally had said (taken from various introductions and commentaries he penned), along with a few references and conjectures based on Corbin’s own expertise in gnostic and esoteric Persian traditions. Part 1 at least ends with an interesting chapter on alchemy, using Taoism as a launching off point. And this is perhaps the essence of the problem; that Jung the pivotal subject of these essays, had a rather limited and narrow (some would say misinformed) view of Buddhism specifically, and Eastern spirituality in general, and that speculations about spirituality are rarely helpful when not based on first hand knowledge.Although Jung had a sincere interest in and appreciation of Buddhism it was for the most part informed only by books, and so relatively superficial and biased. For instance his knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism was via the infamous “translations” by Evans-Wentz, even though Evans-Wentz was no translator, Tibetan scholar, nor even a Buddhist! Instead as an editor he presented these rare and essential mystical teachings 2nd hand through the lens of a Western Theosophist steeped in Advaita Vedanta Hinduism and New Age spiritualism.(For an informed discussion of this and a critique of Jung’s subsequent view see John Myrdhin Reynolds’ lengthy essay in his translation of a related Tibetan text published as “Self Liberation through Seeing with Naked Awareness.”)Overall my impression is that after a really slow start Part 1 at least ends with an interesting essay on Taoist Alchemy, and then Part 2 on Jung's "Answer to Job" and Corbin's "Eternal Sophia" reply, continue in being similarly interesting - specifically because they address the alchemical aspects of Jung's work - ground he was much more familiar with than Eastern religions (and which I am less so).But perhaps the best thing about the book is the general appeal to modern man to rediscover the divine in our own lives – the value and wonder of the soul (in psychology) and spirit (in spirituality), experienced as our Self through myriad masks and paths in the process of individuation.“What needs to be emphasized here is the extent to which this imago animae – insofar as its encounter is a decisive stage in the process of individuation – holds, all in all, the secret of the Golden Flower…. The activation of the archetype of the imago animae is therefore a supreme event. It is the undeniable sign that the second part of life has begun” (p. 79)This may just be the projection of a Jungian, but I can relate to it at least!Otherwise I’m really not sure who the audience was intended for, but it seems perhaps aimed at a reader unfamiliar with either Jung or Eastern religions, say perhaps a freshman introductory philosophy class on comparative religion and the nature of the soul and Self in various spiritual traditions - East and West. (Is there even such a philosophy class these days? Maybe in Seminary.)One quirk of the book is it’s an incomplete manuscript (collection of essays really), which was presented to the editor by the author’s widow with the request that it be published completely as is. This is a shame since some judicious editing would have made it both more readable and relevant.Perhaps there was a good reason these essays remained unpublished during Corbin’s life…although it's clear that from his widow's point of view they make an appropriate, even loving, offering to his memory.3+ stars.

Excellent seller, smooth transaction. I highly recommend this book and this seller to everyone. It shows the difference between the creation and destruction stories I grew up with and the ones Japanesse believe. It is amazing to read this and other mithological creation stories to think which one is the real one, or perhaps are they all false and created by humans? why do different continents have different creation and destruction stories? I now have many doubs about my own religious believes. It is important to read this book and other creation books and do not be afraid to discover new important info about the world's creation.

I really enjoy how these books have a great introduction in the beginning explaining the authors point of view and a overall expectation of what the stories are going to reveal.

informative

It is a great book. However there are lots of typo's in the text but the meaning is clear.

Interesting.

It goes without saying that the book, and Chamberlain's translation, are excellent and should be a part of any liberal education. I had never read the whole book or the whole of Chamberlain's Introduction and many end notes. So when it arrived I immediately glued in ribbons for place markers and set down to serious study. I found to my chagrin, however, that this edition is highly lacking. The end notes lack the Kanji, the Chinese characters, which are used in Japanese along with their phonetic alphabets, and which Chamberlain intersperses in his Introduction and end notes. Instead of the Kanji from the original the publisher put in a slash or other mark. For me, a student of Japanese, the absence of the kanji makes the book close to useless.Chamberlain's end notes, moreover, use Roman numerals to refer us back to various sections. But the sections themselves have no numbering whatever. How can I use the end notes?I don't know much about the publishing industry. But I imagine that at least the omission of the kanji, and perhaps also the lack of section numbers, may have been intended to save money. And I admit that the price is cheap. But the reader should have been informed in advance of these failings. It is definitely not for the serious student.I feel cheated. I know you are a reliable company with good intentions. But I guess this one slipped past you. What can I do? I pasted in ribbons. Not thinking that I would want to return it, I didn't treat it extremely gently. The front and back covers are a bit wrinkled. (Maybe this is the fault of cheap material. But since I cannot prove that, I'll say that maybe I am responsible for the wrinkles.) So I doubt that I can return it as new. What do you recommend? I would like to get a decent and usable edition. But I don't feel like writing off what I have lost on this one. After all, your description of this edition lacked information. What do you recommend?

Endnotes detail the wrong page(They are always on the previous page indicated). Some things left out and replaced with slash marks. It tells you the title of the book at the top corner instead of saying endnotes. Maybe I'm being an idiot but page 74 seems to be written in latin. Anyway the information is there so if you really want to save money go ahead and buy the book but if not then look for something better.
