If you ever wanted to learn how to use Linux for heavy-duty data recovery, this is your book! It really is a one-stop shop for learning how to use Linux to secure and utilize data on a hard drive. With that being said, you need to know Linux well to be able to use this book. It is assumed that you are comfortable with command-line Linux before you start using this book. That means that there will not be a lot of exploration of the Linux operating system itself. You won't be taught how to use Linux with this book; you will be shown how to use Linux tools to aid with data recovery. If you are not comfortable with Linux, I would recommend that you take the time to learn it using the many online guides before tackling this book. It will make your understanding and appreciation of this book much deeper. I am moderately competent with Linux, so I could get the gist of most of this book, but I am definitely going to sharpen up my skills so that I can get the most I can out of this guide. I would recommend it to any data security professional and especially to anyone in forensic computer science.
This is a much needed book is singularly focused on “the use of Linux as a platform for performing computer forensics, in particular, forensic image acquisition and evidence preservation of storage mediaâ€. Bruce Nikkel writes well and knowledgeably about this subject. He keeps his focus on the imaging process and he very clearly inows his stuff. Chapters 1 and 2 cover the essentials of computer storage systems and devices and the basic elements of Linux. Beyond that, as a reader, you will need something more than a basic knowledge of Linux and a large degree of oc comfort with the Command Line. Given that, this book is a complete guide to forensic imaging with Linux, including some fairly esoteric subjects such as enabling access to hidden sectors (i.e.. HPA, DCO) and SMART logs. The experienced computer forensics expert who may be accustomed to using industry-standard commercial tools may be surprised to learn that in terms of the imaging process, everything that may be necessary can be done with free tools. If you don’t have a working knowledge of Linux, you should – and this book may give you the incentive to not only learn Linux, but to use open-source tools for at least some of your imaging needs.Jerry
It's nice to see No Starch Press publish a forensic book since their products are always easy to read and very practical.As a professional forensic examiner, I prefer to do most of my imaging with X-Ways Forensics using a hardware write blocker but there are times when I find it necessary to use linux as an imaging platform. Typical examples being devices with non-removable storage, devices with a USB interface, and RAID arrays.Eighty to ninety percent of the information in this book covers basic forensic imaging practices. Anyone who has taken college courses in computer forensics or who has taken training from one of the major forensic vendors should have covered similar material. Also, *nix admins with some data recovery training might be familiar with this material except for the parts about disk image formats specific to the forensic field like EWF/.e01 and aff. For people hoping to learn the same information on their own, this book does a great job covering this one aspect of forensics (imaging devices using linux).The remainder of the book covers a few topics or commands that even an industry veteran might find useful. Although covered sporadically in other books, it is nice to have a single quick reference for the commands used to image unusual devices like NVMe, optical, and tape devices using linux. Also, I found the sections on dealing with the various types of virtual machine disk image formats as well as the different types of encrypted file systems to be very useful.The only thing I would change about the book is the material regarding the SquashFS Evidence Container that the author is trying to promote. Every major forensic tool has its own special incompatible container (.ad1, .l01, .ctr) and the last thing the industry needs is yet another type. Granted this one is open source but still I don't see it catching on unless one of the major tool manufacturers adds support.
This is an interesting and practical book in the acquisition, management and preservation of disk images for digital evidence. It is also a technical procedural guide to using the Linux platform and open-source solutions for forensic image acquisition and evidence preservation. The author does a great job of organizing the subject matters into a logical progression from setting up a platform, planning and preparations, acquisition to post acquisition activities. It also serves as a cookbook of tasks that can be used as a reference manual later. The tools used in the book are open-source, command-line based, which promotes the practical reduction of the cost of these forensic activities.Overall, this is a very readable, well-structured guide that is well suited to both experienced forensic investigators who want to advance the Linux command-line skills in performing their forensic work, as well as Linux/Unix administrators who want to learn digital forensic skills.
