Review

“A fascinating hybrid…of art history and art appreciation, a personal narrative that reads like a novel…quixotic, but also magical.” —The New Yorker “[Laurens’s] curiosity is contagious, and after reading this elegant pas de deux between the author and her elusive subject, you will surely look at Degas’s celebrated tutu-clad ballerina with fresh eyes…moving…Laurens’s artful achievement is to make us see the person behind Degas’s famous sculpture.” —NPR“Fascinating…part historical chronicle, part artfully discursive personal response and part imaginative close reading of the sculpture’s past and present…full of thought-provoking insights and revelations.” —Washington Post“[A] short, erudite investigation into the story behind Degas’s masterpiece…[Laurens] provides a glimpse into the art world of 19th-century Paris.” —Wall Street Journal“Compelling…[Laurens] animates this fascinating book by drawing on her capacious imagination, her own love of ballet, and her curiosity about the fate of Degas’s model.” —National Book Review“The essence of late nineteenth-century art: Famous man paints nameless woman, her body and image becoming a mantle upon which his notoriety hangs. Who were these women? Typically, no one cares. So it’s refreshing to see an author like Camille Laurens who does.” —Huffington Post“[Laurens] spins a compelling and tragic tale of poverty, power, and the arts that raises questions about the artist’s responsibility to his subject.” —Booklist (starred review) “Well-researched…intriguing…Laurens’s fascination with her subject brings this universally recognized piece of art to life.” —Library Journal“Little Dancer Aged Fourteen illuminates a slice of art history with ravishing acuity…a fascinating tour through the past.” —Foreword Reviews “Laurens vividly sketches out a history of the abuses of child labor in Paris in the 1880s…insightful.” —Kirkus Reviews“A disturbing and enigmatic story…[Laurens’s] book is a meditation on an artist and his forgotten model, forever linked to him through one creation.” —Columbus Dispatch“An evocative tribute to a model, a man, and a moment. Sensitive, human, and profound, this vivid recreation of the sights, sounds, and smells of the nineteenth-century art world is underpinned by solid research, and written in a style which is assured and decisive.” —Catherine Hewitt, author of Renoir’s Dancer: The Secret Life of Suzanne Valadon“[Laurens] is one hell of a writer. More than the facts, it’s an era that she reconstructs, the harshness of which brings a lump to your throat.” —Elle (France) “This fascinating book is…a mirror in which we see our conception of art and of beauty.” —Le Magazine Littéraire “Camille Laurens [evokes], through the story of this model plucked from the gutter, a period in which art unsettled the hypocrisy of a society.” —Le Figaro

The 12” high reproduction of The 14 Year old Dancer by Degas is one of my favorite decorations in my living room. This book was an excellent source for information aboutDegas, the Dancer, the Paris Ballet, and theCulture at the time the original wax statue was made. Very well researched. Highly recommend.

I was so impressed at the speed the seller got this item to me. It was a Christmas gift but I ordered it too late and it was scheduled for the first week in January. Christmas Eve a delivery car came rolling in and it was my book ! My husband got to open it up Christmas morning ! He was a dancer for American Ballet Theater in the 70's and he also saw the original statue in person. He is so excited to read this book. Thank you to the seller for such a great Christmas surprise !

This was a fascinating account of the situation in 19th Century Paris where young girls were subjected to rather cruel conditions as part of the ballet corps of the Paris Opera. Today we have a glamorous image of ballet and music and the stage, but these young women were exploited, many of them even turning to prostitution. History has recorded the name of the little girl who posed for Degas, but not much else. This book goes down many alleys. It asks a lot of questions about what art is and how we have to look behind the canvas.

I bought this book to get some background history about the Degas statue "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" (I have a reproduction that I've always been fond of). After reading the book I can't look at the statue anymore. I just hope the author never writes about chocolate chip cookies! If she does, be forewarned.

I first took this book out of the library and read it but I liked it so much that I had to purchase it. There is something special about the book ,about the presentation ,about the art ,-a special connection.

This was too mature for my 13 yr old granddaughter so I have kept it and am reading it.

Surprisingly shocking story. I love the sculpture at the Philadelphia Art Museum

This book is a big favorite in our house! My daughter was about 16 months old when we purchased it and she has loved lifting the flaps (in all directions!), spotting the differences between the Flora and her ostrich, and repeating the simple text. This book is a terrific way to introduce young children to opposites (obviously), but also to the meaning of each word and the emotions that may accompany them. The phenomenal color pencil work of Molly Idle is also the kind of fabulous art you want to expose your children to right from the start. Her complimentary palette is bright and cheerful and the big, repetitive shapes are themselves a demonstration of visual opposites and complementarity. We love all of the Flora books, but are especially big fans of these toddler-friendly board books. And we're always looking forward to the next great thing from Molly Idle!

Beautiful book. We bought this for our 1 year old but all our children love it. Lovely illustrations and funny opposites.

Bought as part of a baby shower gift. It has not yet been given so I don't know how mom feels about this book. I think it is lovely. The illustrations are great and I love the hard pages for baby to leave teeth marks. The pastels and soft colors are soothing and who doesn't like opposites?

Such a great book! We have Flora and the Chicks and I enjoy this Flora and the Ostrige more. Such great artwork!

My Grandson loves this book!!

We LOVE this book, i read it to my 2 month old in several languages, and we enjoy looking at the images a lot.

Adorable story and illustrations!

What a remarkable, and adorable piece of art. The book has folded pages with which your child can interact. The illustrations are so simply elegant that they are a joy to look at, while teaching simple principles. Priceless.
