This book was difficult because the Japanese of the Heian Period didn't use personal names much; instead they referred to people by their titles. Well, every few years the characters get a promotion and a new set of titles, so there is a constant cycling of titles as the book goes on. In places personal names are used, and if you were confused you can pick up on the action from here and move forward again. So in that respect I found the book a hard read. The story follows a son of the emperor (his name is Genji) as he grows up from a small boy to a middle aged man and constantly advances in the royal hierarchy and has many erotic adventures on the side. Have no doubt: Genji is hard on his lovers. He changes his mind, he demands too much, he chases one woman only to find one who is better placed and so he chases her instead. About two thirds of the way through the book Genji dies, and the story passes on to his descendants. This last part of the book is really interesting, and though I had been afraid I would be bored I was hooked for the last few hundred pages of the story. The tale simply comes to an abrupt hald, and it is clear than there is either more of the story to be discovered in a dusty attic somewhere, or Lady Murasaki died before completing the book.Overall I am glad I read this book. Scattered throughout the book are over 700 little love poems, called "tanka" in Japanese. These are a delight to read, and I go back and read some of them from time to time. I didn't really like Genji, but I did like his story and especially the poems. I have written my own "tanka" for stories I've been working on, and I write love poems to women I'm interested in, too. May you find "The Tale of Genji" to be inspiration and fun!

Many reviewers suggest that the Waley translation has more beautiful language, and that may be. The general criticism of the Waley translation is that he turns Genji into an Edwardian gentleman. I did not understand the meaning of that statement until I read this, more accurate translation. Genji does things which raised eyebrows in his time, would get you thrown in jail today, and which were probably unspeakable in Edwardian times. As a result, Waley worked his way around these events which results in a somewhat different story from that in the Tyler translation. Just to take one example, when Genji brings back the young Murasaki whom he intends to bring up as a future wife, Waley never mentions exactly what happens and implies that Genji does not climb into bed with her until she is old enough to be married. Tyler makes clear that when she arrives to his home, she wants to follow her nurse to bed, but Genji tells her that she will be sleeping with him, although he does have sex with her until she is "sufficiently" old to become his wife. This is but one example of Waley turning Genji into an "Edwardian gentleman". For certain, one realizes much better from reading the Tyler translation of Genji how the traditions of that time set the stage for the Japan of this time, and what amazes me is not how much has changed, but how little.

About the tale itself, what more can I say that hasn't been said? I find this to be a remarkable piece of literature, a carefully crafted and wonderfully told tale of the height of the Heian era, the elegant golden age of Japan where aristocrats correspond in poetry and romances are hatched from a glimpse of a sleeve or the twang of the biwa. Tied strongly to the context of the times--the norms, values, and sensibilities are uniquely Heian--this tale is in many ways influenced by the Japanese take on Buddhism, specifically the focus on the transience of all things, although the intense focus on aesthetics and worldly beauty seems rather un-Buddhist in many ways. Yet, the tale is universal as well in its broader themes; that it is still widely read and enjoyed a thousand years after its composition in many cultures outside of Japan is a testament to this fact. That said, it is not a tale for everyone. Its length, its distance culturally from the modern Western heritage, its leisurely and sometimes slightly plodding plot--these will put off many. And yet, for the interested, attentive reader, this book is an immensely enjoyable read and also window into a unique and beautiful time and place in human history.Regarding the translation, ultimately, all translations have their strengths and their weaknesses; all translators must make tradeoffs and decisions pretty much on a word-by-word basis on issues such as whether to maintain the letter of the text or the spirit of the text, when to remain truer to the source language and when to make concessions to the target language. As such, there is no such thing as a "best" translation, as this is ultimately a subjective decision. For this reason, I frequently agonize over which translation of a work to read, as which translation you read (especially the first time one encounters a work) will forever color your perceptions, emotions, and enjoyment relating to the work.In the case of the Tale of Genji, however, the choice was not agonizing for me. Even though I count certain translations that take freedoms with the original text as favorites (e.g. FitzGerald's version of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat is a guilty pleasure of mine), Waley's remarkable liberties with the text were a non-starter for me. This might be a particular bias for me, for as someone who can understand Japanese, I can compare Murasaki's original with Waley's version and see the differences whereas for other languages I cannot understand, I can remain blissfully ignorant of the differences between the translation and the source material. Seidensticker is much more faithful to the substance of the original than Waley, but in terms of style, whereas Murasaki's writing tends to be rather flowing, elegant, poetic, and indirect, Seidensticker's prose is characterized by relatively short, choppy sentences and characterized by a directness that, while more appropriate for English, is a bit jarring for those who can read the original text. Although Seidensticker's translation could be seen as less "cluttered" by footnotes, without such notes the frequent allusions to other works (be they poetry, historical works, or other fictional accounts) that Murasaki makes--instantly identifiable to Murasaki's contemporaries--are lost on the modern reader. Seidensticker has his followers, but I personally do not find him enjoyable. In contrast, I found Tyler's translation to both remarkably faithful to the original and yet quite enjoyable in modern English. First of all, Tyler provides a thorough and interesting introduction to the work, which helps put the reader in the context in which it was written. Stylistically, Tyler's language matches the leisurely, flowing, and poetic style of Murasaki quite well. Consider that in the first three paragraphs of the text, the original contains 7 sentences. Tyler translates this in 6. Seidensticker uses a remarkable 15 sentences! Tyler is also much closer to the original in referring to most characters by their titles rather than by name. Even the person who is most commonly referred to by name, Genji, is called by a rather generic surname that is as much as or more reflective of his status in the nobility (the Minamoto "clan") rather than a "family name" in the modern sense of the word. This authenticity places demands on the reader that Seidensticker does not; for some this "burden" is more trouble than its worth (and to be honest, can make it difficult to get back into the book after an absence of any length), but personally in addition to this convention's faithfulness to the original I find this touch to create a level of intimacy that draws the reader into the novel, as an insider for whom names are no longer necessary. Tyler provides the titles and names used at each chapter start (as well as a brief introduction, which is frequently necessary because the chapters do not always flow chronologically) and occasionally provides footnotes where the title usage gets confusing (personally, there were a few places were I could have used more footnotes along those lines, but 98% of the time it is clear to the attentive reader who is being referred to).Just as in Seidensticker's translation, there are many beautiful illustrations. Versions of this tale have been illustrated in Japan almost as long as the novel has been around, so this adds not only a nice aesthetic touch in keeping with Heian sensibilities but also faithfulness to the tradition of the tale. Tyler pays considerable attention to the poetry in the tale, which is ridiculously difficult to translate due to the many layers of word play and allusion to other works of poetry and literature that simply cannot be captured in modern English. Somewhat regrettably, many of Tyler's clever turns of phrase (such as exploiting the remarkable similarity in dual meaning of the modern English "pine" and the Japanese "matsu") will likely be lost on many who are not familiar with the Japanese language, but they are enjoyable for those who do understand what Tyler is up to (and can be enjoyed anyway by those who do not). Almost all poems have footnotes with additional information about the style, substance, and allusions present in the original poem.In the end, Tyler's faithfulness to both the style and substance of Murasaki's original places demands on the reader; not all will enjoy the expectations he places on the reader with respect to such issues as titles versus names. As always with translations, kick the tires on a couple of options and find what works for you. However, for me personally, it is this faithfulness to an incredibly gifted writer and a lyrical and poetic tale that makes Tyler the translation of choice for me.

For anyone concerned about having a healthy diet, this book is essential. Complete with explanations of the ingredients and why they are important for a healthy lifestyle. The book's introduction is followed by a section on a 'well stocked pantry', which I feel is a bonus that I really needed. Ms. Shulman provides recipes that are nicely categorized in the table of contents in a way that makes it simple to find what I'd like to prepare. She explains, in terms that are easy to understand, why she chose each recipe. I love her anecdotal stories preceding her recipes. It takes me right into the scene where she herself is enjoying the food I am about to prepare. This is not only a book of Recipes for Health, it is also an excursion into the kitchen with the author. Fun, informative and healthy!!

I've bought a lot of cookbooks in my day, but this is a favorite. Overall, I find Shulman's recipes to be the perfect mix of healthy and delicious. This isn't tasteless diet food--it's food that's about enjoying fresh ingredients and flavors without covering them up with excessive salt or fat. Unlike Cooking Light and some other healthy recipe sources, she's usually realistic about how much salt, cheese, etc. a recipe needs and what size serving a normal adult person might eat, so you know what you're getting into in terms of servings/calories/sodium when you look at the nutritional information.I've only had this book for a month, and I already have about a half-dozen recipes that are on my "repeat list." Many are fast and simple enough for weeknight dinners (unless you're allergic to chopping and using a few different pots). Things like making simmered beans are reserved for the weekends, but Shulman usually provides helpful notes about what can be prepped ahead of time, how to store, and how long leftovers last in the refrigerator/freezer. All her notes on storage, substitutions, etc. are helpful and realistic--if she tells you to do something the long way, there's probably a good reason for it.The book has a great index and is well-organized into sections including breakfast, salads, soups, simple vegetables, pastas and grains, veggie entrees, and a final chapter on fish/poultry. As others have mentioned, this is not a book for someone who believes every meal has to include meat. But for the vegetarian and the veggie-friendly, this is a keeper.

I have loved this book ever since I first made the fusilli with cherry tomatoes and garlic - the spicy tomato sauce pasta is now a go-to for my family. I am always looking for easy, healthy Mediterranean-style recipes that don't sacrifice flavor, and Shulman always provides a great variety of tasty dishes with healthy ingredients. Other recipes that look appealing include the pasta with tuna and olives and the eggplant and arugula salad. Shulman is the greatest!

I do a lot of cooking, but I rarely add a new cookbook to my collection, because I have so many of them already. However this book is well worth it, there are so many great recipes and ideas in here. It is mainly, but not completely vegetarian. Most of the recipes use common and inexpensive ingredients that are also good for you. Martha Rose Shulman also has a cooking column in the New York Times.

I have been using this cookbooks for about two months now and I can't get enough of it! The recipes are detailed and straightforward but also leave lots of room for personalization. The book makes me feel like I actually know how to cook! I have yet to screw something up, which is miraculous in my kitchen. Before I had this book, I didn't really know how to cook vegetables, so I ended up not eating them often (or eating lots of packaged frozen meals, ugh). Can I say this book has changed my life or is that going too far?

The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams. The Second Reason:Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the Praxis II test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers. We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker. We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort. The Third Reason:We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the Praxis II test.A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the Praxis II test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam. One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the Praxis II test. Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day. You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the Praxis II test...The Exclusive Test Taking TechniquesExplains how the Praxis II test time limits are the #1 enemy of most test takers, and what you can do about it- You avoid falling into the many "time traps" built into the test, giving you an immeasurable advantage over those who go into the test unawareShows you super speed methods to get through the questions you know with ease- Saving you time so you concentrate on the hardest questions without rushingGet quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about themDetails the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the Praxis II test that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activitiesOur researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master complex problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantageLearn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. I did not find this book helpful or useful for my Praxis studying. Unlike my preferred practice book, this one was not as easy to read. There were too many topics covered in too little detail. The book I liked--from REA--did a general review of numerous topics and then provided many examples to illustrate what they were talking about. This one just passed over the concepts with hardly any depth.Additionally, I found that the practice tests in the back of the book did not coincide very well with the topics introduced in the study section. I ended up returning this book and just using other resources like online tests to practice. If I had more time to re-order, I would have looked into REA. I do not recommend this book.

If you are looking to study for the Praxis tests 5001 (or any of the tests that are part of that sub test) DO NOT get this book, just google your test number and you can find much better items, or books than this. The videos in the book that have links are not useful at all because it's the same details that are listed in the book.Find flash cards or make your own flash cards and it may be a better tool for you. The Praxis books that you can buy have more details and more practices tests, than this book and those books can help better. In the science part of this book, it doesn't list much about the moons (which are on the tests), etc. The science part can be the hardest part of the test. The best way to learn is to make flash cards, watch videos on youtube, take the practice tests on the praxis website and study with people.... this book didn't help at all. It needed to bring down the information in a cleaner way to understand and needs more pictures and more cliffs notes in the book with more pictures/details on their videos.

It's been four years since high school and I just graduated with my Bachelors degree in Education. I just took the full 5001 Multiple Subject exam in one sitting. It included the subtests 5002, 5003, 5004 & 5005. I'm pretty sure I passed all four subject exams. Minimum score in my state is a 157 out of 200. I don't recall exact scores but I know I didn't score anything below a 157. I used this book to prepare for the exam. I feel this book sufficiently covered some minimal areas that helped me brush up on things I had forgotten or just needed to review. The videos were helpful. I was concerned because I wasn't expecting the material covered in the book to be so advanced considering it is a Elementary Education Exam (K-6). However, after taking the test, the material studied was needed to pass the test, so in that respect prepare for some advanced questions. The practice tests in this book DID NOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL TEST and were (in my opinion) quite HARD. Specifically the Math section. I was asked questions that I never even covered in high school or College Algebra, Statistics, etc. I am and have always been a great Math student and some of the sample test questions from this book sample tests stumped me. SO... I decided to go to the ETS website official site for the Praxis and ordered the practice tests from there to compare to the tests I took from this book. Now that I have actually taken the real Praxis tests, the practice tests I ordered through ETS are way more realistic and present in the exact format as the actual exam was. I basically FAILED the Math practice test in this book. I took the real Praxis Math test and got a 200 (perfect score). It cost me $60 for all 4 practice tests from ETS (can also purchase individual subtest for $20ea) but it was well worth it so I ddin't have to pay to re-take any of the tests again. My advice... this book is definitely useful to prepare for the exam, however, if you like you can take the practice tests in the book but I would recommend If you can afford it take the ones offered on the ETS website for the Praxis 5001 (all four subtests included) or individually the 5002, 5003, 5004 or 5005.

Even though I had to purchase from a different source but amazon did get back in my good grace by providing my refund. This book is worth the price. It gives details, examples, and videos. It is everything you would need for the Praxis 5001. I take my test in April 2018 and will return for an update on my whether or not I passed it.

As you can see by my high rating I throughly enjoyed this study guide! This was my second time taking the praxis II and this book allowed me to pass the Social Studies and Science sections that I previously failed!

This information is very different from what is on the test. It goes into much deeper detail and includes a lot of information that is not relevant to elementary ed.

My experience so far with this product has been really good. I like that the information is separated by topic under each subject and then gives me important information about each topic that is important to study. This makes it really easy for me to make flashcards to use to study as well.

Helped some for my test. It’s pretty lengthy and some of the information was not useful. But I did like the quizzes at the end of the subjects. I also like how each subject was broken into sections to make it easier to follow.

I spent nearly 30 years of my pre-retirement adult life teaching philosophy at the college level, having prior to this received my doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins. Several years ago, because of an ongoing secondary interest in the history of Western civilization, I began reading through Will and Ariel Durant's multivolume "The Story of Civilization," a project that took me three years to complete. I found it to be a thorough (albeit slightly dated) summary of the history of Western civilization through the time of Napoleon.Because I was no longer teaching and had a bit of time on my hands, I decided to read through Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy," a work that I had never had the opportunity to peruse during my professional career. I figured it would offer a refresher course on some of the philosophers who had less bearing on the areas of philosophy I regularly taught. I also hoped that it would give me some fresh insights into the philosophers and philosophical movements with which I possessed a degree of familiarity. The book was not what I expected. I will note why momentarily. First, however, the positive. As I knew from having read his "Story of Civilization," Will Durant is an engaging writer. He is eloquent without being flowery or effete. His vocabulary is extensive, but he does not use it to show off his erudition. In no way is he pretentious. He is also able to explain difficult ideas in a straightforward, understandable fashion, certainly a boon when discussing the theories of philosophers. And he is good at explaining how the thought of a philosopher flows from and contrasts with that of his forbears. However, if one is expecting a true history of philosophy, this is not the book to read. I would go so far as to say that the title of the book is quite misleading. This is not the story of philosophy. It is the story of the writings of those philosophers who, for whatever reason, Durant wants to highlight. The book pays no significant attention to ancient philosophy before Socrates or after Aristotle. While Socrates/Plato and Aristotle are examined in detail, subsequent developments in Greek and Roman thought are either covered in a most sketchy manner or absent altogether. For example, neo-Platonism in general and Plotinus in particular, are ignored.Even more shocking is Durant's treatment of the entire middle ages. It is in fact a non-treatment. Without explanation (other than that Durant doesn't think it is important) we skip over nearly a thousand years of Western thought and quickly find ourselves studying the philosophy of Francis Bacon. One could read this book without being aware of philosophers such as Anselm, Peter Lombard, Bonaventure, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, and many others (not to mention the Islamic philosophers of the tenth and eleventh centuries). When we come to post-medieval philosophy, while we are treated to a fairly detailed explication of Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, and Kant, Durant doesn't even mention Descartes (sometimes regarded as the father of modern philosophy) or the British Empiricists (Locke, Berkeley, and Hume) except by way of extremely brief references when presenting the thought of other philosophers.Durant does somewhat better in describing the major figures of nineteenth century philosophy. Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche are all given extensive space. However, Durant spends an inordinate amount of time describing the thought of Herbert Spencer, who today is nearly forgotten.Does all this mean this book is not worth reading? No, it doesn't. I've given it Four Stars, for the reasons stated earlier. It does cover the thought of certain philosophers in a way that is reasonably complete (for an overview) and relatively easy to understand. However, one should not read this book as though it were a general introduction to the story of philosophy.

I read this book when I was 18 and understood only maybe 25%, but it became a huge influence on my life. Now I have just re-read it at age 61, and figure I understood about 80% of it, and got an even bigger thrill from it this time around. Like religion or science or anything else, there is no need to completely understand philosophy it in order to find pleasure in it. Will Durant is an amazing writer who brings joy and understanding to the history of some of the world's greatest minds, and how they painted God, human nature, politics and wisdom in general.

This work is amazing! This work is a gem. The expressions and choice of words makes this really poetry. If the quality of communication is what makes something a work of art (LRH, "Art"), then this book qualifies as enduring art. Furthermore, there is this pervading earnestness that only comes from one who is invested in what he writes about; it is no mere intellectual juggernaut tour de force. Mind you, a dictionary must be kept close at hand to look up the words that may not be clearly understood in order to imbibe its nectar. It may not be light reading--but it is magnificent reading! This book is an exemplar of a quote by Leonardo in the "Introduction," "the noblest pleasure, the joy of understanding." There is enormous pleasure between the covers of this work at times even rapture!

I read this when I was in high school, so it was my introduction to philosophy. I didn't understand much of it at the time, but stuck with philosophy and history (where Durant was also a major figure for me) in college and went on to teach both subjects. I bought this as a present for a young friend just entering high school and have told him it presents many windows. They will be dark for him now, but gradually he will begin to see wonderful things through some of them.

Ariel and will Durant have written many wonderful books but The Story of Philosophy by Will is the epitome of his ability to write a scholarly and complete history of the great minds that have pondered the essence of life. If you have never read anything about philosophy, this the place to start. If you are already a student of that science, this lengthy volume will add to your knowledge. Durant does not espouse any particular school of philosophy but he lays out the basics of the thinking of the most recognized minds that allows you to make your own judgment. Even if you have only a passing interest in philosophy, get this book and keep it at your bedside. You will find yourself reading it many more times than you would ever have guessed.

This book is wonderful, but if you like this book, avoid the cheap 99 cent version. So many typos, it can be hard to read sometimes. Even the cover reads "Phiosophy" (yes, no L in the word!). Be aware that there's a much better Kindle version that you can find on Amazon if you search with "Story of Philosophy Simon and Schuster". It costs a little more, but it's worth it.
