Some of us took Latin in school because the Greek alphabet was the purview of fraternities and sororities, and we were by disposition and inclination “independents” from birth … and never gonna make Phi Beta Kappa in this lifetime, anyway. But, damnit, we loved Greek mythology! Ms. Barker does the Greeks (and definitely the Trojans) proud with her all-about-Achilles novel. At first I thought her writing too mundane for such grand subject matter. Where is Virgil when we need him?! For this I apologize. Her account of the last years of the Trojan War as related by Briseis aka Hippodameia (look her up!) is so compelling, so intimate, and so gory, I resented the fact that the novel ended.

As a classics major and Latin teacher for over thirty years, I have read many novels which retell the ancient myths from the female perspective. This was the most brutal but at the same time the most moving I have ever read. Reading it during the Kavanaugh hearings made it that much more meaningful. Beautifully written, this powerful book is a must read.

Greek myths, especially ones involving warfare are depicted primarily from the male perspective. This story departs from the usual recounting of the exploits of Achilles during the Trojan War in that Briseis is the central character. We see much of the protracted battle between the Greeks and the Trojans play out through her capture as Achilles’s war prize. The relationship triangle is explored among Achilles, Patroclus, and Briseis even though jealousy isn’t a primary factor. As Briseis is a slave, she adopts a realistic attitude of acquiescence to her servitude to survive. She bears witness to the unbreakable bond between Achilles and Patroclus and develops a strange sort of understanding of the anger that drives Achilles. Patroclus becomes her friend and treats her with unexpected but appreciated kindness. The day-to-day lives of the women slaves are described in excruciating detail. All the way from harem girls providing pleasure to women tending wounded soldiers, their existence alternates between hard labor, boredom, loneliness, pain, and terror. Briseis is one of the fortunate ones. As the prize of Achilles, she is given greater respect than most of the captured women, many of whom were former wives of Trojan aristocrats.Pat Barker’s writing puts you in the middle of the action. The story is immediate and unflinching. You smell the campfires, see the wounded men, and feel the sadness of the captured women. I offer a cautionary note that there are plenty of violent, brutal, and adult situations that some readers may not like.

This is my first Pat Barker book, and it's pretty good, but it's imperfect -- very imperfect. For one thing, the sentiments and vocabulary of Briseis are 21st Century sort-of feminist, and they seem misplaced in the pre-historic realm of the Trojan War. Second, the book switches from the first-person to third-person with no apparent reason; as a result, it's jarring and seems very gimmicky. Those two exceptions aside, the story of the end of the Trojan War continues to be riveting. As are the characters, the dialogue, the mise-en-scene, and so on. It's definitely a good read, but it's not great writing.

This is a strange one, as I admire the author’s earlier work and have read some great modern renditions of the classics recently (Circe, Burial at Thebes, Home Fire). This isn’t in their league. The style is surpassingly awkward, with endless hyphenated parentheticals interrupting the prose. Barker is apt to shift from first person singular to third person, then to first person plural in one sentence. The characters’ locutions are contemporary and common. And the narrator engages in a silly back and forth with the reader, who poses as interrogator. The theme that all history is male, and that women are enslaved by it, is not new, but perhaps especially appropriate now. But its presentation isn’t consistent or convincing. If it weren’t The Iliad, it wouldn’t be worth the read.

Great writing transcends time and place. I think it was Faulkner who, when asked why we read literature, said that we do it to be reminded of the internal truths of the human experience. Baker succeeds, drawing on Homer's Iliad, which some scholars have noted marks the beginning of Western literature. We all know the framework of the story: the Trojan War, a miscreant king, Agamemnon, and a demigod hero, Achilles. Homer sang of the wrath of Achilles, which of course involves a young woman, Briseis. Remarkable that no one seems to have ever written her story--until Baker, that is. We see the great war through her eyes after the invading Greeks destroy her town, slaughter her husband and brothers, and take her as a war prize, giving her to Achilles. Her story tells us much about suffering and survival, of honor and pain, but it also reminds asks us to think about the power of love. I don't mean romantic love, of course. Baker's aim is broader than that. Her description of King Priam pleading for the return of his son, for example, is heartbreaking. It is matched fully by Baker's touching description of Briseis' inner conflict, torn as she is between hating the enemy that changed her life forever but nevertheless finding it possible to forgive the man who made her a slave and then who did not.I hated reaching the final page, wishing that the book were longer, that the story would continue.

I have never read Pat Barker's other works but I will now. This is a beautifully written novel that brings alive the time of ancient Greece from the viewpoint of her main character. Really impressive. You won't regret your purchase.

#277,742 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

First off, I'm not a huge reader of books unless it's a very specific topic I'm extremely interested in. That being said I ran across this here on Amazon and gave it a shot. I'm a couple years older than Rodney, but also started skating in the 70 's and followed the ups and downs of skating ever since. Was fascinated when I saw him perform on a beta tape of a contest in the 80's....magical. It wasn't until I heard him speak on the Bones Brigade reunion dvd that he really piqued my interest. Soft, but very well spoken I was touched and hung off of every word he said in his part of that dvd. The book itself is extremely well written and gives a great deal of insight into Rodney's upbringing and life and times skating and just plain being Rodney. From being a kid with a skateboard to successful businessman, this book covers it all and was an easy read for me since I was so interested in learning about Rodney. The parts of the book revolving around his mom are especially touching. So many great experiences and life's trials and tribulations. Lots of neat explanations on trick learning and creations too. Mr Mullen definitely deserves the grand title of the "Godfather of skateboarding". Look him up on YouTube, you won't be disappointed, oh yeah, buy this book too!

I met Rodney Mullen once, on Go Skateboard Day in 2008. He’s one of the most genuine people I’ve ever encountered. I was so awestruck that I forgot to let go of the Almost Skateboard Deck I’d asked him to autograph.I stood, clutching the deck like a kid refusing to relinquish his favorite toy, while Rodney gently pulled on it once—so he could sign it. But my fingers were frozen in place. That deck wasn’t going anywhere. Instead of getting in a tug-o-war or acting irritated at the difficulty my failure to release the deck caused him, Rodney just smiled, shifted his stance slightly, and autographed it anyway. When I read, “The Mutt” this January, I was amazed at the challenges Rodney has experienced and overcome throughout his life. Skateboarding is his passion, his obsession, and his lifeboat. It carried him through the storms of life and even caused a few along the way.Rodney’s life is inspiring. I cried at times as I read about his relationship with his controlling and volatile father. I cheered when I discovered his personal victories. Most of all, Rodney Mullen’s story shows us how focusing on our passion can create unprecedented results in even the strangest circumstances.Roland Byrd author of Break Your Mold: The Art of Overcoming Patterns and Behaviors that Hold You Back

"The Mutt: How to Skateboard and Not Kill Yourself," by Rodney Mullen, is an honest, raw look into the life of one of skateboarding's patron figures and into the sport itself. Let me just say that if you don't know who Rodney Mullen is, just go to Google or YouTube and search his name. He is one of the most innovative pioneers of modern skateboarding. He's been skating professionally since the late 70's as a freestyler and many of the tricks he invented led to what modern street skaters are doing today. He continues to invent new tricks with his style of skating that is truly unique, a blend of technical and street style. This book is his autobiography, a story which reveals so much more about the man who is responsible for more of modern skateboarding's development than most pro skaters involved in the sport today. It's also a very inspiring story about Mullen's own personal challenges with family, personality disorders and many challenges that helped to shape him into the man he became. It was not long into reading that Rodney reveals himself to be the very intelligent but socially awkward person that initially led him to the skateboard culture as a kid. We also see how his character is shaped by the influence of a very driven and structurally rigid father who pushes him to excel in life to the point of eventually mandating Rodney's retirement from professional skateboarding at age 16 because he decides it's taking over too much of Rodney's life and doesn't hold a future for him. We read as Rodney learns how to cope with these and many other challenges and eventually becomes a multimillionaire through co-founding one of the most successful skateboard companies of the 90's and continues to cast an influence over the skateboarding industry well into the new millennium, a full 30 years after he first stepped foot on a skateboard."The Mutt" is a casual read and took me only three and a half weeks to complete, compared with a book of similar size that took me more than three months to finish before reading this one. Rodney clearly has the writing style of an analytical thinker, recounting vivid details of his life in a meaningful story telling fashion. At time I could barely put it down without reading three to four chapters at once.As a high school teenager I remember being introduced to Rodney Mullen via pictures in skateboarding magazines. I'll never forget that one of my favorite skateboarding videos was the Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song video in late 90's. It was really exciting to dig back into so many memories of my own past as I read about someone who influenced my growing up in a small way. After reading his story, it became clear that his influence was actually not as small as I thought.Particularly encouraging about this book is the way Mullen describes the learning process he's gone through in life with regard to dealing with problems, or more specifically learning to deal with them. I know that many young people in the skateboarding community use their sport as an outlet. While outlets can certainly be positive, they often serve instead as a way of not dealing with life problems. In this book Rodney shows how he had actually exhibited that same pattern, but over time began to learn how to deal with the many issues in his life rather than just avoiding them through skating.I would very much recommend this book to anybody who's been involved with skateboarding in their lifetime as you will certainly appreciate the story of Rodney Mullen. I'd also recommend this as a good read for people who simply appreciate seeing how others resolve many of life's common struggles. You won't be able to put it down quickly.

I'm not much of a skateboarder but a child of the 80's. Rodney Mullen is a very interesting person and groundbreaking skateboarder. This book is about life more than skateboarding but that's what makes it great. I was impressed by how candid he was because he is quite an introverted person. He delves into all of his life's trials and tribulations with total honesty. A lot can be learned from this book. Great for anyone struggling through life as Rodney shows us how you can pick yourself back up from anything and accomplish great things, not just win trophies and chase success. Thanks for sharing Rodney!

It's a lovely little version of of this beautiful story/poem. However, I bought this edition because reviews said the illustrations were amazing. Because there's no view of the inside of this book I went on the good advice of those who love the illustrations. THERE ARE NO ILLUSTRATIONS, lovely, amazing, NONE!!! There's just snow flakes printed on each page like the cover.Amazon, please stop lumping reviews for different products together. Really, with all the advanced technology available I would think that one very helpful thing would be possible.

I've been giving this little book as a Christmas gift for nearly 50 years. It suits almost anyone who celebrates, or has celebrated, Christmas. This version is illustrated with wood-block cut art that appeals to me more than any other illustrations of this tale ever have. The non-rhyming verse goes on and on and on ... It is difficult to read aloud. Nonetheless, it's worth practicing to read aloud because it's an awesome in-the-trust-sense -of-the-word, and often amusing, slice of bygone life that warms the hearts of oldsters, and has brought giggles out of the tummies of discerning two-year-olds. The price is modest, so as a gift this can be given without implying any obligation in return. I love its size, weight, presentation, and jaunty recall of snowballing, cats on silent-snow-covered wharfs, rolling seas, fumbling firemen, silly boys in wool caps with candy cigarettes dangling from their lips, uncles snoring after huge family meals, and so much more ... Yes, I recommend it, and I hope to be buying and "gifting" it for another 50 years or so.

For many years I read this aloud to my high school classes on the last day before Christmas vacation when I found that real work was not productive. Reading Dylan Thomas had the effect of mesmerizing them while presenting an opportunity to learn a nice bit of poetry. I used a "bombilating' voice (Mrs. Protheroe's "gong bombilating") and loved reading it aloud; Still do read it aloud to myself1.

"A Childs Christmas in Wales" had become a Christmas tradition years ago, when ran across a 33rpm LP of Dylan Thomas reading this classic--it, along with Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows" chapter on Moles Christmas, replaced "Twas the Night..." with the kids some 40+ years past. Love having the written text to follow along, and being able to dwell on some of the more favorite phrasings. This is a small, nicely printed soft-bound volume, which stores with the now CD version of the original reading in the Christmas box until next year.

I agree this is a wonderful story. Not as good as Capote's "A Christmas Memory", but still a warm rememberance worth reading. My copy was in poor condition. Although not suitable to give as a gift, it is ok to set out during Christmas. The corners on the front cover are worn making the book look used.....which it may be. Or possibly from the way it was just thrown into a box with some other stuff. Merry Christmas

I needed this lovely book in order to further appreciate the beautifully filmed movie based on it: A Child's Christmas in Wales. I didn't want to miss one, evocative word of Denholm Elliott's wonderful narration. What a treat to delve in the richness of Dylan Thomas' poetry! As it turns out, Chris Raschka's illustrations furthered my appreciation for the story, portraying that wild, imaginative abandon of childhood.A treat, when Thomas describes a Useless Present: "a celluloid duck that made, when you pressed it, a most unducklike sound, a mewing moo that an ambitious cat might make who wished to be a cow..." I've known cats like this, black & white cow-cats, who poke around, eating grass, and moo-mewing.The poetry of the narrative will pull you in: "All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged, fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hand in the snow and bring out whatever I can find. In goes my hand into that wool-white bell-tongued ball of holidays resting on the rim of the carol-singing sea . . ."One things leads to another, you also may enjoy the lyrical film: The Secret of Roan Inish.

I purchased A Child's Christmas in Wales because I was tasked with the job of finding a Christmas book for my book group's December meeting. Other reviewers said it's suitable for adults. I agree. The writing is beautiful and the story surprisingly funny. I highly recommend this sweet, uplifting story. At times, I found a sentence just a touch twisty and confusing but, although I think adults will appreciate it more, children should enjoy the story and understand what's happening from the context. It's worth purchasing a copy to keep for annual rereads. My only complaint is that Amazon sent me a crunched copy. I could have returned it but decided not to bother. I will return damaged books in the future. After putting it under a pile of heavy books for several weeks, the book is flatter but will never look like a new book and it *was* purchased new.
