I grew up in the '90s and was kind of a fan of Jewel, and did love her poetry book. After reading this book, I have a whole new respect for this artist.This book helped me understand some of her songs, which gave them a much more profound meaning. For instance, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" meant so much more once I knew the story behind it. Same with "Love Used to Be."Jewel's book has been inspiring, surprising, and highly encouraging. I truly loved it.Note: The extra content in this Deluxe edition did not work on my Android's Kindle app, nor on my tablets. So you might need a Kindle Fire or something similar to access the deluxe content.

I remember buying the Pieces of You CD in the 90's and listening to it non-stop. Her voice is amazing, and her writing is so personal and very honest. Jewel has always been this way. I also got the chance to see her perform live years ago. It was just her and her guitar. That's all she needs. She sang every type of music, including opera and yodeling. She spoke to the crowd like we were just friends hanging out. My husband and I also love her family's show, Alaska: The Last Frontier. I admire so much their way of life. When I found this book and began reading it, I couldn't believe how much she struggled and was able to overcome. She always stayed strong, true to herself, and never lost faith. I will think of her and the words in this book when dealing with my own struggles. I thank her for being brave enough to put it all out there so that others may learn from her experiences. She is a beautiful woman.

I can't say enough about this book....1st and foremost, I've always been a fan, but you do not have to be to get a million other things out of the book.Talented in writing and so vulnerable and honest. Fantastical adventures and real hardships. Exciting people (celebrity) appearances and some cool characters. I feel like I traveled just reading.I read her first book and even if I had heard a story before, this go round has much more detail.She's an angel, she's everybody, she's American dreams and humble, salt of the earth and makes me look inside myself as she so purposefully does herself.

I bought this book impulsively and wasn’t expecting much...I’ve always been a big fan of Jewel’s music but have never really been interested in celebrity memoirs, so I wasn’t sure I would like it or even finish it. I’m so glad I bought it because this is now one of my favorite books I’ve read. Not only is her life story fascinating, but I felt this book was full of so much insight and advice that I will benefit from in my own life. I even found myself highlighting and circling certain lines that stood out to me. As a young(ish) mother, I particularly related to her thoughts on motherhood at the end. I highly recommend this book and I’m really grateful that I purchased it. I plan on buying copies for friends.

A fast read that you cannot put down. Jewel reveals more in this book about herself that no other person would dare reveal about themselves. She shares her experiences of being bullied, being physically and verbally abused and neglected as a child, and being surrounded by perverts at a young age, as well as her positive experiences of being treated for free by a physician, being divinely protected throughout Mexico and while homeless, being protected by bikers and Inuit, and obviously being given a HUGE break. She spins her book into a self-help reference throughout and especially toward the end, showing how she overcame her past and showing us how we all can too! Packaging and shipping were great too, free no rush is the way to go when you live near an Amazon fulfillment center.

I am noticing a trend by reading many autobiographies of famous people. People I thought had perfect lives and that never experienced hardship. Never Broken is a beautiful, honest story about a young girl's journey through life, homelessness, struggle, and a unique and special talent to bring music to the world hungry for something real, honest, and true. Sometimes, when we see famous people like Jewel we think, "Oh! She must have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth. I guess, some people just get lucky." That is hardly the case with Jewel. She has been through life's ringer just as much as the most ordinary of us. But, she is extraordinary because she used her struggles and scars to impel her forward and bring us the gift of her music, which represents the beauty and pain of life in all it's subtleties, twists and turns. Now, when I listen to her music I feel the heaviness and weight of her truth. And, the ironic way she bursts out of her cocoon and flies like the most beautiful butterfly. I hope she will read my autobiographical book "The Gift of Will. A Road to Forgiveness. A Passageway to the Divine" about my surviving a childhood in a cult and my experience finding my own voice and thriving in spite of the odds. I feel Jewel is a kindred spirit, and her book a demarcation of her finding her voice and using her inner strength to give her wings to fly!

Inspirational memoir of Jewel's impoverished and sometimes abusive childhood. Growing up with an alcoholic father in an Alaska homestead, first abandonment and later betrayal by her mother, Leaving home at 15, and living out of her car at before being "discovered" in a San Diego dive coffee shop. The inspirational part of the story is being self aware, focused and driven to rise above her challenges. Later in life, having a failed marriage and ups and downs in her career she maintains an optimism and sense of self worth that many that have experienced similar challenges may have given up (or worse) on life itself. Never broken is an apt title.

I've read a lot of celebrity memoirs, but this book is in a class by itself. An engaging, compelling read, if draws you in immediately and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Most churches face a significant attendance problem: their membership roles are significantly greater than their worship attendance. Some face a membership dilemma of a different sort: Their worship attendance far outweighs their membership roll. That was my church's problem. On one hand the membership process may be too easy, not facilitating proper Christian discipleship. On the other it may be too hard, inaccessible and contextualized too little. But, either way Chuck Lawless, in Membership Matters, has the answer, or at least a big part of it. Upon implementing some of Lawless' suggestions my own church grew in membership by at least 30% in one year! Chuck Lawless is professor and senior associate dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Church Growth at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In, Membership Matters, his education and expertise are on the bottom shelf for all to reach. Membership Matters is a compilation and application of insight gathered from a national study of the membership processes of many effective churches. The study answers multiple questions: How do effective churches implement new membership classes? How do they move newcomers into membership? How do they motivate stagnant members to get moving? What should a member class teach? Lawless begins by chronicling some of the many reasons why we must give priority to membership classes. First, congregants are much more likely to stay committed if they are expected to commit up front. Second, relationships are the glue that hold many people to the church. Those relationships, especially between the lead pastor and his sheep, are first kindled in the membership class. Third, many of the effective churches use their membership classes as evangelistic opportunities. Souls are changed as lead pastors get to know visitors and explicitly teach the Gospel. Fourth, membership classes can be used to move stagnant attendees into ministry. Many just simply don't know what is expected, or how to take the next step. One of the greatest assets to Membership Matters is that reading it will force you to think through your own church's membership process. How do we get people from un-born to born-again to disciple to disciple-maker? How do we organizationally go about making disciples? Is it too complicated? Is it too ambiguous? Are we doing a good job at baptizing but neglecting the call to teach all that the Lord commanded? Or are we successful at teaching all that the Lord commanded but remaining out of reach for the unchurched and outsider? In reading this work and following Lawless through the process I was able to see the obstacle in my own church's membership process. For example, in the last chapter he plainly asks pastors to walk step by step through the membership process. To read along as each pastor describes his process is incredibly eye opening. You see a common theme of conversion, baptism and discipleship yet each is contextualized for their own church. Lawless also gives great insight into the problem of stagnation, membership without ministry or influence without involvement. What good is having multiple members if no one is doing ministry? He sites several reasons why the people in your pew aren't serving: They are skeptical about the church in general. They have been wounded in previous churches and are fearful to commit. They are distrusting of organized religion and desirous of a non-committal type of organic spirituality. Transience also adds to the problem of non-ministering attendees. Lawless states that most Americans move every five years. But, as Lawless points out, sometimes the fault lies on the church. The non-ministering attendee may simply not know how to join. The process may not be organized or published properly. The pastor may not be properly communicating the need for commitment and involvement. However, the problem is not insurmountable. It can be overcome and here is where Lawless shines. He gives several practical steps to moving pew-warmers into ministry: First, allow them time to join. You don't want members who were guilt-tripped into joining. Second, strive for excellence in all that you do. In other words, people want to join a church that is successful. Third, continually put before the people the need and importance of joining. Fourth, clearly communicate expectations in the membership process. Fifth, recruit volunteers face to face during the membership process for it is through relationship that people are inspired to serve. In addition, provide entry-level opportunities to serve. Our lack of trust in them is matched only by their lack of trust in themselves. So, they need to have a few wins in the shallow end before wading into the deep. Though certainly there was a publisher's page limit, a few thoughts on certain current issues would have been helpful. For example, Dr. Lawless seems to say nothing about the tension between organic and organizational service. He calls us to develop systems, which promote member involvement. He even gives much needed practical help in developing the system. However, where does the Holy Spirit enter the equation? How can the Word of God be used like a sword to cut through the apathy, laziness and complacency of dead, church members. Are they dead? Are they alive? Is there a point at which organizational equations and formulas cease to solve the problems? No doubt, Lawless has answers for all of these and may have implied some of the answers in his many mentions of prayer, but even the discussion of prayer seemed like another box on the to do list. However, to be fair, this is a book of practice and practicality, and in that aspect it is very useful. Another example of lawless' silence would be in the area of Missiology. Many of us live among the unchurched, uncivilized and irreligious. We are not dealing with people who simply need to make a decision for Christ. If we were to force a decision, they would simply add Jesus to their sex, money and moralistic deities. They need to have their entire worldview shaped. In other words, how should we go about giving people time to process the truths of Christ? Should we immediately launch them into service? Should we be concerned that they may not fully understand the gospel and use Christian service as a means of appeasing God? Perhaps, they should be assigned a mentor or persuaded to attend faithfully church for a season before becoming voting members. Dr. Lawless does admit that people need time to process, but much more could be said about how churches should handle this intermediate time period. Another minor but noticeable absence would be a discussion on the usage of church covenants in the membership process. Many churches do use them, and Lawless notes it. But, pastors have questions: should we use signed, formal covenants as Rick Warren suggests? Should we require understanding? And, what about constitutions and bylaws? What if people really are not able to discern the meaning of such documents? Should we teach literacy before the Gospel? Or after?As I said earlier in this review, Membership Matters, was a real inspiration to me and the church I serve. So, I highly recommend it. Let me explain what happened. When we first constituted as a church four years ago, we established a fairly rigid membership process. It involved a waiting period. After all, we didn't want altar call members. Moreover, applicants had to read and formally agree through signature the church affirmation of faith, covenant, constitution and by laws. Then upon turning in the signed agreement (completely of their own volition and initiative) we would schedule a elder examination after which we would vote as a congregation to approve them for membership. This process worked great as we assimilated church folk from other churches and from out of town. The internet was our greatest witness. Most churched people appreciated the intentionality. Some even appreciated the rigidness. But, as our churched decided to move into the city, reach out to the local college and serve the poor neighborhoods around the church, we noticed that many were coming, attending and organically joining the church. However, they wouldn't make it formal. Membership Matters helped us to see that they weren't making it formal in large part due to the fact that the process was too complicated. Many of them couldn't read the documents, at least not with any comprehension. So, with the help of Dr. Lawless, in Membership Matters, we went to work devising a more contextualized membership process: Exploration, Confirmation and Celebration! In other words, if you are church planter or pastor wondering why your attendance doesn't match your membership rolls, then digest this book. It was a great help.

This is a great book explaining why church membership is important and why churches should expect more of their members. The author makes a compelling argument for conducting membership classes (without calling them that) and communicating expectations to new members. He also gives good research into churches who have conducted these classes and have seen great results. The book has a practical aspect as well, showing people how to conduct these classes and giving good ideas on when they should be given. A very helpful book!

I'm coming from 26 years in aerospace and 46 years as a Christian. Recently asked to serve on a Membership and Assimilation Committee of a Southern CA church with a member constituency of 1,000 I am seeking to get a foothold of credibility among those who have walked this way previously in similar churches.This book fills the bill as an easy read and a highly credible resource. The author is a professor and senior associate dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Church Growth at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Graham has a lot of credibility as a resource for me as well as Rick Warren of Purpose-Driven fame (the latter of whose approaches are given liberal print space).What is distilled here are the results of surveys that were responded to by 52 growing churches (Appendix 14 is the actual survey included)with cogregations ranging in size from 2 churches with less than 100 members to 10 churches over 1,000 members. Plenty of ammunition for ideas on how to fire up a meaningful membership and assimilation committee, a new members class or a whole darned church as far as I'm concerned!Leave an email addy if you'd like to correspond on church growth issues. Lawless' book moves a step further by providing a practical guide for church pastors and leaders to design and implement membership classes, not only to better incorporate new members, but also to inspire older, non-serving members to get involved in ministry service.Buy this book. Gr 8 Up-A former Navy SEAL describes his journey from aiding victims of violence to protecting people and, now, living a life of service. Modeling parts of his engaging memoir on the "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories he loved as a child, Greitens describes events along his path, preceding each with a short "You" segment presenting a moral dilemma taken from his own life. As a college student he began seeing the results of violence in the world with summers in China, Bosnia, and Rwanda. At home, he trained as a boxer to build his strength. After graduation he worked with Bolivian street children. At this point, halfway through the narrative, there is a series of black-and-white photographs. The author Eric Greitens was a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford, who also went on many global treks where he worked with the poorest of the poor around the world. From war-torn Rwanda to the incredible poverty of orphans in Bolivia. He saw where help was needed and realized that these people needed more than food and shelter...they needed someone to stop the genocide. So he became the best of the best--a Navy SEAL.Eric is modest..just tells his story with love, empathy, and incredible compassion. These are NOT the three adjectives when you first think of our fighting forces. He brings humanity to the world that most of us dismiss...We hear that 8 MILLION people were killed in the Congo genocide--tribe vs tribe, then just move on to the next story that catches our eye.THEN Eric returns from active duty overseas and finds that our vets are being “thrown away”, discarded by the USA and Veterans Affairs. (To be fair now that CEO Robert A. McDonald is the new secretary of the VA, we are seeing great improvements.) Many vets committing suicide, many homeless or unemployed. What do you do with the skills you learned fighting in Fallujah? Where you faced constant death from an enemy from many different sides. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Boka Harum, and ISIS much less the enemy hidden in the craggy mountains of Afghanistan or in crumbling buildings and desert of Iraq. Unwinnable wars. And Eric decides to DO something. He created “The Mission Continues.” A support group AND a trust to help these returning vets NOT with charity but teaching them skills to learn to be someone else than a soldier, marine, airman or sailor. and not just skills, but a brotherhood and sisterhood where Vets could relate. Because only a returning vet truly understands what war does to your mind, spirit and mind. Eric now has three books. Read them all. Then help our returning vets. A “Thank you for your service” does nothing to help our vets return to society. This is a GREAT book!

Good book but I am more disappointed about the author since he has been in the news about his sexual accusations.

This is a young adult version of "The Heart and the Fist". Not much new for me since I had previously read "The Heart and the Fist". I bought this book to give to my 15-year-old grandson, so it's very appropriate for that. If you are an adult, I would recommend "The Heart and the Fist", by Eric Greitens (same author) instead of this book.

Given that Greiten's work is a scaled down version of his earlier " The Heart And The Fist " the author does a wonderful job of melding his divergent experiences together while, at the same time, presents clear and not to be forgotten lessons for young readers. A must read when one considers mental toughness and living a life of purpose.

After hearing Eric Greitens speak at a university commencement earlier this year, I was eager to read The Warrior's Heart: Becoming a Man of Courage and Compassion, an adaptation of his book The Heart and the Fist. Mr. Greitens is an engaging speaker - someone whose words challenge, uplift and inspire. He is refreshing, sincere and really quite remarkable. I worried that his book would not come close to the "real life" version of his message, but I was wrong.The Warrior's Heart is a thoroughly captivating narrative of Mr. Greitens' journey to become "a man of compassion and courage." It is a quick read, pulling readers in by putting them into various "what would you do?" scenarios. Woven throughout the book are examples of civic engagement as well as character lessons. Integrity, duty, service, perseverance, kindness, commitment, and yes, courage and compassion, are illustrated in Mr. Greitens' experiences from China to Croatia, Bosnia to Bolivia and eventually in his Navy SEAL training. The message never comes across as preachy, only illuminating and enlightening. This book is action-packed, yet poignant and thought-provoking.Mr. Greitens asks readers to "be more than just good, and better than just strong" by doing more than just "living for ourselves." I enjoyed this book and its message immensely. As a community leader charged with promoting civic and character education in our schools, I am excited about sharing this book with educators and students throughout my state. It has the power to motivate and inspire young people to become men and women who make a difference - people of compassion and courage.

My son is over forty. I sent him this for Christmas, writing only that "some of this is not for you" so he would get that I did not consider him a teen.Eric Greitens might write in short chapters, even as Dan Brown did in "The Vinci Code." But what he tells and how he tells it of personal enounters with real hard challenges, most ones he has chosen for growth, rivets a reader.This is a brief review and if it is to serve anyone, it has to help someone decide if this is his cup of tea. Don't buy this book if you cannot be inspired when you are too old to even dream of becoming a Navy Seal. I was a conscientious objector when Vietnam was raging. Eric Greitens is a conscientious and compassionate warrior way far along a path as humanitarian. I nominate him for a Nobel Prize for Peace.

This book reads like a primer on how to "grow up" and do something significant no matter how big or small the "what gets done" is. Mr Greitens has done well in describing the multitude of problems which need work and provides sources to be involved. He put his life on the line, no small feat. In the end, we are all brothers and sisters - we need each other and this book shows how first steps can be taken whether as a SEAL or as a volunteer to put our lives on the line for others. Great read.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I think this book is a very interesting story of what a person can do if he or she really puts in the effort.I also think the story is good for all people not just the young. I am in my sixties and I have been showing service for most of my life. It is rewarding helping others to be as successful as they can be.

When I first heard about this book while the author was on his book tour, he was described as this kid who'd been unable to find a job as a journalist who had flown to Somalia. So, I had thought this book was an account of how he'd survived after doing this incredibly stupid thing. But in reality he was much smarter than that, he planned his adventure so he had a greater than 50 percent chance of coming home. He hooked up with a local agency that provided him with UN trained bodyguards, secure housing, translators, clan access. So, he wasn't stupid which makes the book much more interesting to read. You get the sense that the local people appreciate that an outsider sat down and let them tell their story, even if their story strains credibility frequently. It is a remarkably fair and balanced account. It is a lively fact-based story.Where it failed for me was the epilogue where he comes to the conclusion that the solution to the problem is a generous influx of cash with few strings attached. The solution to most problems -- the US educational system, third world garbage pickers, the end to our reliance on fossil fuels, unemployment -- could all be fixed by massive influxes of non-judgmental cash. One more set of people with their hand out, saying just trust us, we'll make somebody's life better, we'll get back to you on that, doesn't really convince me at this point.

"Pirates of Somalia" is a stupefyingly audacious book. Actually, it brings it a far bit short to call Jay Bahadur's work simply a "book." It's more life-altering project. Bored writing marketing reports, he conceives an idea to fly to Somalia and get the straight scoop on this international phenomenon by talking directly to its protagonists. Amazingly, he finds a willingness in the people he writes to and - a mere weeks later - he's winging it into a nearly ungovernable country meeting up with contacts heretofore unseen. Say what you want about the book's execution, but in terms of sheer audacity of action: Hats off, my man. Bravo.I knew I was in the right place when Bahadur's references Aidan Hartley's The Zanzibar Chest early on. I view Hartley's book as a masterpiece of reporting and memoir. It's easily one of the best five books I've read. Bahadur quotes a passage in which Hartley "describes in chilling detail the life-and-death importance of clan lineage during the worst days of the [Somalian civil] war." If you see Hartley as your model, I'm in.Bahadur focuses his reporting on the Puntland State of Somalia, the hotbed of piracy. He seeks to cover what he enumerates as the "four main causes explain[ing] the rise of piracy in Puntland: geopolitics, environmental factors, economic adversity, and breakdown of governance." What makes the book sing: this is no armchair analysis from a comfortable, far-away seat. This is face-to-face, winning-hearts-and-minds, chew-the-khat, ride-the-Toyota Surf-to-the-small-village, meet-the-elders, hire-the-bodyguards-and-translators reporting. Very, very well done.

Bought the book after watching the movie. Book story line feels redundant at times but otherwise is quite captivating

I gave this 3 stars (almost 4) but just could not do it in good faith. I really admire Jay for justdoing this book in the first place. For those who are interested in how and why the Pirates gotstarted....it's a good book. Some of the book is a little boring....but I did get through it. Thepirate "business models" seemed a little contrived....but who knows...they may be "right on"I liked his discriptions of the towns and some of the characters he met.
