Athanasius and Asceticism, by David Brakke

Review

"There is much to commend in this fine book... Brakke does not succumb to the reductionist tendencies of Athanasian studies: he presents a theologically articulate, often misunderstood, ascetically oriented, ecclesiastically dedicated, visionary, and well-educated theologian whose agenda was to create a church in which all could have easy access and full status. Brakke has presented us with a portrayal of Athanasius that can be believed and trusted." (Richard Valantasis Journal of Religion)"Advances our understanding of Athanasius and of Christian asceticism. Brakke brings a social historian's sophistication and a linguist's ability... providing a clear thesis with which to reckon." (Joseph W. Trigg Church History)"A splendid contribution to the continuing debates about the relation of theology to politics in the controversies of the fourth Christian history." (Theology)"A fine book... Brakke argues convincingly that Athanasius sought both to regulate the role of virgins (and women in general) in the life of the Church by removing them from public activities and to persuade the men who lived as monks... to become more actively involved in their local churches." (Journal of Ecclesiastical History)

This book is a reworking of Brakke's doctoral dissertation. As such, it is steeped in scholarly detail. At the same time, it is very readable by ordinary people, because of the excitement with this Brakke presents his subject matter.Athanasius is little known to many people today, yet he was, by some estimations, the most influential person in the fourth century. Brakke's book focuses on Athanasius' central objective: to bring the independent monasteries of Egypt under the control of the bishops. In the process of conveying this highly political goal by someone usually considered a "theologian," Brakke shows how religion and politics are never separate endeavors. He presents clearly and effectively the key issues that were at stake in Athanasius' battle with the "Arians" as well as in his production of "The Life of Anthony," the Egyptian monk.Brakke's work is focused tightly on his subject matter, leaving for others the exploration of Athanasius' engagement with emperors (see, e.g., Athanasius and Constantius: Theology and Politics in the Constantinian Empire. It is not every day that a doctoral dissertation translates into exciting historical reading, but Brakke has succeeded in making this a reality. Highly recommended.

There is a wonderful story about Athanasius' fourth exile under Emperor Julian that should not go unnoticed. Having angered Julian, Athanasius fled from the emperor's wrath by boat. With Julian's agents in hot pursuit, but a good gap between them, he suddenly ordered his oarsman to turn the boat around and return to Alexandria. When his boat passed the emperor's agents, the agents, not recognizing him, called out "have you seen Athanasius?" Coyly, Athanasius replied, "he is not far away!"Of course, his bravado saved his skin and the Church benefited from his longer life, but this reader of David Brakke's book could not help but find within the story a metaphor for his experience in reading this study of Athanasius' life. A study of Athanasius' asceticism is not a bad way to explore his life. It is one of the defining themes of his episcopacy, and as Brakke makes clear, contextualizes many of his efforts to unify the Egyptian Church in a period of disunity. Asceticism is a cornerstone in his praxis for building a Christian commonwealth. But the focus on asceticism, which I would view as a rather narrow spiritual category, has an innate limiting quality that naturally pushes other historical concerns out of the picture leaving the bishop's life incompletely defined. While emperors, councils, and heretics get their due notice, Athanasius' many problems with them are defined by the ascetical scope, and the full perspective of Church politics suffers from it. Athanasius can be seen as much as a divider as he was a uniter (he seems to have possessed a temper), and the dynamics of his episcopacy, which included charges of treachery, torture, backroom dealings, and shady finances, are slighted by a study I largely consider "spiritual" in scope. So, like Julian's agent in the boat, I know he is not far away, but by clear sight, I am left hoodwinked.Such criticism is muted, however, by the outstanding study itself which contains much good for understanding early Egyptian Christianity. Brakke makes clear that Athanasius was largely driven by his desire to create a unified Church and his ascetical theology was the means by which he sought do it. Virgins and desert ascetics were incorporated into the Church's framework with an emphasis on imitating and mirroring the saints, the Virgin Mary for women and Saint Anthony for men. Brakke examines the virginal communities in town and desert monasteries. Athanasius' relationship with the Pachomian federation and his writing of the "Life of Anthony" are given much space in this study. However, for additional insights in this area, I would recommend William Harmless' book Desert Christians: An Introduction to the Literature of Early Monasticism.Brakke covers Athanasius' battles with Melitians (similiar to Donatists), Arians, and monks who were unreceptive to his efforts to regulate monastic communities or, once under Church authority, were unwilling to assist in the Church's administration. Athanasius liked to make good monks into good bishops whenever possible. Monastics were an important resource in bringing heretics into the fold and create political unity. While Athanasius was respectful of "academic" Christianity in Alexandria and the work of Origen, study that leads to salvation is remodeled by him to the ethical sphere emphasising mortification of the flesh and demonic combat. This adjustment in soteriology by Athanasius replaces the horizontal thinking on salvation found in early Alexandrian Christianity with a vertical perspective that quite literally sees Christ's redeeming power occuring "in the air" as an affront to demons. In his analysis, Brakke often contrasts Origen and Athanasius, which is also a contrast between "academic" and "ecclesiastical" Christianity, to illustrate important changes in theology but also a change in the church's power dynamics. (Additional reading on this shift in theology should include Panayotis Tzamalikos' book Origen: Cosmology and Ontology of Time (Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae). Though it does not contrast Origen and Athanasius, it does give a good presentation of Origenist theology.) Athanasius uses his theology to lessen the influence of the schools and strengthen the bishops teaching office. For Athanasius, unity comes from the bishop, not schoolroom debating circles.Brakke's presentation of Athanasius ascetical theology is clear and well presented in the third chapter of this book. Athanasius' ascetical thinking is rational and balanced. It is applied to all levels of church life in an effort to secure salvation at all levels of Christian vocation and commitment. Extreme asceticism and negative views of marriage have no place in the Athanasian commonwealth. Athanasian spirituality is an embodied spirituality that never devolves into gnostic dualism or social division, nor does it lapse into Pelegian thinking, grace and virtuous exercise are parallel realities in the path to Heaven. Despite the presence of demons that hinder Christian efforts, Athanasius makes clear that Christ makes for an easy ascent. "God became man, so that we might become God," to quote the saint.Despite a little myopia created by author's scope, this was a very good book for me and I learned quite a bit about Athanasius and asceticism. I plan to read more of Brakke's books. I certainly recommend this one.

Yes, this is the same book published in hardcover as "Athanasius and the Politics of Asceticism," from Oxford. I appreciate changing the title, because some chapters aren't as much about politics.

To the modest virgin brides who may read this book: please know that IF you don't feel like doing everything this book instructs you to do--on your wedding night--THAT IS OK. You want your wedding night to be relaxed, spontaneous, and fun! Right? If it becomes serious and tense, consider whether you are pushing yourself into something you're not quite ready for, or are too goal-oriented. This book leaves little room for spontaneity IMO. The wedding night is solemnly spelled out in detail, as the only way to do it right. (Talk about spoiling the fun!) Many virgin brides would rather get comfortable with the various aspects and sensations of intimacy before they try for orgasm, for example. This book assumes you will want it immediately, (and if you do, great!) But the authors see it as unquestionably vital to the first sexual encounter. The implication is that if you don't achieve it, you or your husband have failed somehow, and botched your wedding night! This kind of pressure is a sure kill-joy, as well as libido thief. What's the big hurry? You have the rest of your life together to work on a beautiful and intimate relationship that is so much more than merely physical. This book gave my dear husband unrealistic expectations of me, and it took me nearly two years and a different book (The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex, by Sheila Gregoire) to reconcile myself with the way I felt on my wedding night and after. I was too inexperienced to freely challenge the ideas of the Lahayes, and thought something was wrong with me/our marriage. During that time I would even have given their book about five stars, I was that naive. Also, to the husbands of virgins--know that the less pressure she feels, the better she will respond. If you assure her that she can take all the time she needs, she will be able to relax and to feel secure in your love. These two things are a big turn-on for women! There is much wisdom and practical advice in this book. It is not demeaning to women as some claim. There is much emphasis on female satisfaction. For that I give it three stars. I just wish they would rewrite the chapter on the wedding night---- and that they wouldn't tell people who cheated on their spouse that they don't have to confess to their spouse as long as they've repented! (Yes, really!)

Painstakingly organized and cleverly thorough. This book reached me on so many levels. Not only does it explain the importance of sex in marriage, but it explains in detail how to be ultimately satisfied in love-making, both man and woman. If this book were the standard for sex education, I think we would have an almost zero divorce rate as well as overwhelming reduction of crime in our world (as love loss sometimes drives people to do things they wouldn't normally do). As a divorcee, I find that, with prayer, it has completely freed me from the guilt and negative mind-set that comes with the sin of previous divorce. I have married couples in mind to whom I would like to recommend this book. I would jump at the chance to recommend it to couples who are getting married. I wish I knew about this book 20 years ago! I think it would have helped me see clearly to the right life partner.

I bought about half a dozen of the best rated most popular christian sex books. This being one of them,I expected it to be good but it was ok. Overall too graphic, too how to.. (who can't figure that out?) It is possible there are newly wed couples out there who really don't know human anatomy in 2018 so I guess it would be good for them. I do suggest reading Love your husband, love yourself by Jennifer Flanders. She does an excellent job on this one, she talks about why it's important, the benefits, and the blessing that come with having sex with your husband and often!

This book is very useful for couples going into marriage as virgins. As Christians abstaining till marriage, it would be a shame to have a bum honeymoon because of inexperience and lack of knowledge. This book helps. It treats sex on the levels of physical, mental, spiritual -- speaks of things that affect (for better or worse) a sexual relationship. However, this book goes beyond "newbie" level, and speaks of things that anybody may be missing from their relationship, keeping it from running smoothly. This book is written from a Christian perspective, and by BOTH a man and his wife, so you get both perspectives.

Bought this book for my daughter and her fiancé. I found it after I had been married for more than 10 years and wished I had read it when I was first married. Very informative and written by a great author. This book covers not only the physical but also the mental and emotional aspect of intimacy. Must read for any married couple no matter how long you've been married.

Excellent book for a sensitive subject for Christian families. Includes chapters just for men and chapters just for women. Great illustrations that portray the information in an appropriate manner and not in a crude or suggestive way. Helpful information is provided for seasoned married couples, newlyweds, and everything in between.

I came across this book when I was looking for something to help with my "lukewarm" attitude about sex. My husband and I had been married for 17 years at the time. I borrowed "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask" from my friend but found some things to be offensive and vulgar. I began praying about the situation because I loved my husband and knew this was a need of his. I found the Act of Marriage at a Christian bookstore and as I thumbed through the pages, it really opened my eyes about some things. I can honestly say it changed our sex life in amazing ways. We have now been married 32 years and our sex life is very satisfying. I have given this book as a wedding gift to many couples. I don't want them to have to wait 17 years to get this information! My husband is a pastor and we often counsel other couples. The "Act of Marriage" is one of the two books we often recommend. The other book is "His Needs, Her Needs" by Willard Harley. One word of caution. In the older versions of this book, the LaHayes expressed that there were cases when they felt abortion was permissible. I strongly disagreed with them. They have since changed their perspective on that.

This is a superb book for women who feel out-of-touch with beauty products, colors and trends, or struggling a little with self esteem. If you look in the mirror and think, "Why bother?" or "Where do I start? What do I do?" this is the book for you.Carmindy's advice is heavy on pep talk. It's a very positive book. She also delivers precise, clear tips (with a product list at the back of the book) for specific issues. The question-and-answer sections -- broken into sections such as eyes, skin, etc. -- are also helpful and cover a wide range of ages, skin types, and skin tones and colors.I'm a former model and now "of a certain age"... meaning over 50. While I have some "Where do I start?" issues, and her Q&A section answered several questions for me, this wasn't my favorite makeup book. (I highly recommend The Makeup Wakeup: Revitalizing Your Look at Any Age for anyone over 40, and certainly for 50+, 60+, and beyond.)In "Get Positively Beautiful," I really liked Carmindy's photo illustration showing exactly what makeup she carries when she travels. I also appreciated her advice for air travel, including getting on board wearing no makeup and lots of moisturizer. (I routinely do that, knowing I don't look my best at the boarding gate.)Carmindy's five-minute face advice was intriguing enough that I've ordered her book, The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every Woman to learn more.My favorite part of this book included the before & after photos. One woman in that section had my coloring and style, so I learned from it. Another had my skin type (and related issues), so I learned from what I saw there, as well. All in all, I like this book but it didn't offer as many "ah-HA!" moments as I might have liked. "Get Positively Beautiful" is probably a great choice for any woman who's not sure about her looks or the best makeup to bring out her most attractive features. The "positively" part of the title is key: Carmindy is being very upbeat and positive when she assures readers that no one has a perfect face, and highlighting your best features can transform any (and every) woman.(Note: I'm not suggesting that rave reviews have come from women with self-esteem issues. It's just that -- many years ago -- having spent a lot of time in a chair, having someone create a "look" for me, to fit a specific designer or show, I've heard a lot of this before. I wanted a little more from the nuts-and-bolts side of face design.)Fans of "What Not to Wear" will practically hear Carmindy's voice in the text, and the book design is very stylish.Carmindy didn't write this book for absolutely everyone. That's always a smart decision for an author. She's speaking to a specific audience, and doing so beautifully.I don't regret buying this book, because I picked up some useful tips and encouragement. I think her "5-Minute Face" book is probably the one I'll enjoy more. But, for a little of everything, a gentle introduction to your best looks, and lots of Carmindy-ish encouragement, "Get Positively Beautiful" is a good choice.

This book includes a lot of positive tips about how a woman "should" feel about her features with tips on how to get to that point. The actual make up tips seem somewhat generic and could probably use better illustrations. There are plenty of pictures of at least one beautiful woman, Carmindy. It is typical of the TLC approach to hair, makeup and clothing in that it attempts to make women comfortable with what ever body they have and how to make the best of good features while ignoring or minimizing the bad. This book needs a few more specifics on how to select and apply the makeup. Enjoyable, but falls short of the 5 star category

Maybe I'm being to harsh but I felt yet once again for being such a great make up artist I hope this wouldn't fall under the category of fashion/make up books where the professional artist really doesn't give you tips on doing anything. I mean it's great for someone who is just starting to like and get into make up or perhaps you haven't put on make up for a while and your jumping back into the saddle, or maybe your that woman or girl who needs to pull yourself and your confidence back up this book and other books in the (Carmindy Series) are for you. I equate this book to a level one starter book if you are truly trying to up your game on learning about make-up. I like her as a make up artist because she achieves the natural beauty look so effortlessly so I thought maybe buying this book there would be actual useful tips on how to achieve that look, but most of her answers were very cookie cutter and answes you could pull off a magazine at the bookstore, great for killing time, not very effective unless you like really listening to self-confidence gurus.

For someone new to make-up, I find that this book is a useful companion to Carmindy's 5-minute face. The most helpful part to me is seeing pictures of real people wearing make-up. I don't know if that sounds silly, but if you have never worn make-up, it really helps to get an idea of how it is supposed to look, or give you a range of how it could look -- there's never any pictures on packages to give you an idea, and my friends started to think I was getting weird staring at their make-up.

I always enjoy Carmindy on reruns of WNTW. She says things like (paraphrasing here) "Honey, you were beautiful before you sat down in my chair." I bought this book for my tween granddaughter who is curious about the world of makeup. It's full of positive messages about everyone's inherent beauty. That's good for all of us. And her message for young teens is, as I read it, wear an SPF product and use a tinted lip balm. Everything else is just for experimenting. Good advice about handling blemishes, too. Thanks, Carmindy!

Carmindy is a delightful woman with an infectious smile and positive, upbeat attitude. BUT, this book is not for anyone who already knows the basics of makeup application. And, actually, it might not even be relevant to makeup newbies because there is very little step-by-step instruction. I think this book is more inspirational, than informative, and is targeted towards those women who are ready for "a new you" but who are feeling insecure. Those of us who have confidence in our look and just want to learn some new tips, tricks, and techniques need to look elsewhere.
