Daniel J. Clarke is an actuary and development economist who works as a Senior Insurance Specialist in the Disaster Risk Financing & Insurance Program, a joint program between the World Bank Group and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. Over the last decade he has worked with more than twenty developing country governments to develop efficient, cost-effective solutions for enhanced financial protection against disasters. He has a first class degree from Cambridge University in Mathematics in Computer Science and a D.Phil. in Economics from the University of Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.Stefan Dercon is Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Oxford, and a Professorial Fellow of Wolfson College. He is also Chief Economist of the UK Department for International Development. Previously he taught in Belgium and at the University of Addis Ababa. His interest is in applying microeconomics and statistics to problems of development. He has worked on risk and poverty, agriculture and rural institutions, political economy, childhood poverty, social and geographic mobility, micro-insurance, and measurement issues related to poverty and vulnerability.

More like a booklet than a book, and only for specialized audiences, not informative for the general readership.

This is quite a densely written book with many references to the published literature on the subject, so not one for the average interested reader. This is not to disparage the contents. The spelling used is American but tone uninvolved, observing from an office rather than on the ground. At the end of each chapter a summary revisits the content.Quite correctly the authors point out that having a natural disaster plan agreed upon in advance helps everyone, from first responders to those affected and the government that wants to help them rebuild. Drought, flood, earthquake, tsunami and storms are mentioned, also climate change and conflicts. Figures provided are from the UN, World Bank etc. The authors hope to see that a disaster need not bring tragedy.The impression I received is that some readers may be going to work in the insurance industry and will be underwriting or directly involved in funding disaster relief plans. We are told of village cultures in India or Africa which provide for funerals with a club, all paying a set amount yearly and anyone needing to pay for a funeral given a set amount. (But the money doesn't seem to earn for them, so they never get richer, unlike a co-op.) We are also told of Mexico which has a fund called FONDEN which pays relief after earthquakes and other disasters.Some farmers in occasionally risky weather areas will buy crop insurance but will need to prove they planted drought resistant seed or applied pesticide before they can claim. This is not so much in case of fraud but what the authors call a moral hazard situation whereby a farmer may not take precautions if she knows she will be compensated for a coincidentally poor crop.I was interested to read the section on how disaster funds and governments should 'think like an insurer' by planning for a payout and reinsuring some of the risk. Japan is cited as a case of swift highway rebuilding due to forward planning. I thought a line should be present saying that if insurers and governments are worried about the cost of climate change, they should divest from carbon-intensive firms and invest in carbon neutral ones. Why be part of the problem?No mention that I saw of the bugbear of corruption. This was exposed as far back as Live Aid when Bob Geldof had to go and get officials on camera before they would admit food aid to the country - the usual bribes would not be given, the officals would have no chance to appropriate some aid, or to see it mostly got to their family, tribe, religion or political faction.No mention of how disaster relief money is often soaked up by companies and NGOs from outside the affected country, arriving to distribute imported goods, build with imported teams and provide imported services.No mention of how recipient governments can shunt disaster relief money aside for internal political purposes and buy all the soldiers new rifles.No mention of how disasters are often an opportunity to expel local people from their land, so resources end up in the hands of the wealthy. Nor of how to see that officials apportion compensation fairly; a man who owns a fine house and rents out six more tends to get all his destroyed houses rebuilt before the man who lost one shanty gets a roof.No mention of how bribes may have seen that houses got built on fault zones or flood zones in the first place, and they will be again. At what point do you advise stopping insuring? At what point do you stop providing food aid because the locals see no reason to limit family size if there's always someone coming along with a box of protein biscuits and a bag of meal?To me it seems that corruption should be mentioned; because a fund is responsible for making return on investments, and shouldn't pay fraudulent claims, and is responsible for how the relief it disburses out of that fund is used. The authors of course are entitled to their own opinions.The imagery presented is minimal and limited to 'the medieval begging bowl' and 'Odysseus and the Sirens' - both revisited several times. No photos and no visual charts, maps or graphs, just a few tables of information. I thought the presentation could have been richer and stronger with visuals. I also would have liked some narrative element - say, a day in the life of an agent who hears of a disaster and notifies the other people she needs to meet with, how they make plans for that part of the world and that type of disaster, if weather is an ongoing hazard or armed conflict is cause for delay. Without this interview the book seems abstract... though such interviews might be found among the references.No mentions of blockchain, cellphones, satellite phones, drones, satellite imagery, solar panels, all of which are proving enormously useful in disaster assessment and relief distribution.My hardback has a useful glossary P109 - 112 and notes, references and index P113 - 139. The notes told interesting stories of actual disaster responses, from Nepal to Japan, New Zealand and Sudan, which I would have been inclined to place in the body of the text. I found 21 names which I could be sure were female, but many references were given by initials.I borrowed this book from the Royal Dublin Society Library. Before I start, let me just say, this is a VERY well-researched book. It's a history buff's dream. The amount of information this author was able to collect is nothing short of amazing, particularly considering this event happened over 100 years ago.Having said that, the story droned on far too long about the politics and military strategies...one got the impression the author was trying to squeeze every single piece of information he could into the story, without really attempting to make it mesh or cast it in an interesting light. The actual sinking and all that occurred afterward (which is the part I found most intriguing), is only about 15% of the book. It took me nearly a month to read this book, which is unheard of for me, because 3/4 of the book is so very slow. I could only read a few pages at a time without yawning incessently.Beyond that, so many people were introduced it was difficult to keep them all straight. Some sort of index with the passenger names, their home city, and their occupation would have been nice.I also felt the book could have benefitted from including pictures. The author describes a multitude of them, and with a quick search, I was able to find most of them on Google. However, it would have been nice to have a section of the book devoted just to pictures so the reader didn't have to break up their reading time trying to do their own searches.*An extra star was added for the superb research.

Erik Larson is not capable of writing anything less than a gripping account of history. All of his previous books have been spellbinding accounts of storms, cities, crimes, inventions, ships and/or war. In DEAD WAKE: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, Larson returns to the subjects of war and ships and stirs in a potent mixture of international politics as well as a little romance to once again seduce his readers with a contemporary view of an historical situation.Written to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania, a Cunard passenger liner sunk by a German U-Boat, Larson's account differs in several ways from other well-known books produced on the subject. Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy, published in 2002, is one of the best-written accounts of the disaster. The difference between Preston's work and Larson's might be found in the subtitle of the Larson book which emphasizes the crossing while Preston's book is most memorable for its account of the sinking and its aftermath, particularly accounts of survival. No one can read Preston's book without feeling as if he/she is clinging to a piece of wreckage in a cold, spring sea awaiting rescue. No one can read Larson's book and not feel like the proverbial fly on the wall in the infamous Room 40 of the British Admiralty. While Preston addressed Room 40, in Larson's writing, the room takes on a role and becomes a character (albeit not a very appealing one) in its own right.Larson skillfully gets into the mindset of Winston Churchill and how determined he was to see America enter the war. In the States, Larson goes back in time and brings President Woodrow Wilson to life through a love affair that seemed to take up more of his time than thinking about the suitability of America's neutrality. Yet Larson allows readers to see Wilson in a most human light; perhaps the love affair gave him the strength for the decisions he had to make later. While the reader feels a connection with Wilson and also with the much-maligned but ultimately blameless Captain of the Lusitania, Captain Turner, utter horror and strong dislike is brought out when we read about Captain Schwieger of U-Boat 20 and, in a strange way, perhaps even more when we examine the real-life characters and goings-on within the Admiralty's Room 40. Germany and Britain both emerge as more than a bit despicable.The pluses of Larson's latest work are his acute examination of Room 40, his up-close look at Woodrow Wilson, and his ability to swing between the behind-the-scenes action and balance his discoveries with a conventional but absorbing look at some of the passengers on board the Lusitania all while building a true and terrifying suspense in the narrative. His profile of Charles Lauriat, Boston bookseller and collector of rare documents and drawings, is excellent. One senses that Larson was truly interested in Lauriat and might, having not been faced with producing a book to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Lusitania's sinking, have chosen Lauriat as a sole subject for a book or article.Erik Larson can never disappoint. Whether one reads a great deal about WWI history, maritime disasters, or early 1900s international politics, there is something new to be learned in DEAD WAKE. For those who have read very little about the Lusitania, this book is an excellent starting point. As mentioned before, Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy tells a similar story but with a slightly different approach. Both books have something to offer, but Larson's, being newer, may include some fresh revelations about the history we thought we knew.

Larson successfully manages to bring a fresh perspective to a tale that I felt I knew.Dead Wake- The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is a surprisingly well crafted re-telling of a known event. Despite knowing the outcome - the loss of nearly 1,200 souls at the hands of a German U-boat in the spring of 1917 - Larson keeps pulling the reader along. He does so by adopting many perspectives - those of passengers on the cruise ship, crew members on the U-boat, Woodrow Wilson in the White House to name just a few - with just the right amount of telling detail to bring the reader into the moment. Reading Dead Wake is a tutorial in early twentieth century naval architecture, morality, social manners and political history.Larson shows how the sinking of the Lusitania was, for many, a “Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back”. Taken in isolation, this was a tragedy. Indeed, the captains of the Lusitania and the U-Boat, Cunard executives, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill and Kaiser Wilhelm made assumptions about each other’s behaviors and interests which proved to be tragically wrong. Put in the context of the beginning of World War I, the sinking altered the course of history by dragging the United States into the conflict.In other ways, the event was a classical tipping point. One era - the world of Victorian manners and gentlemanly wars - ended and another - the era of global modern warfare and the emergence of American leadership - began. Perhaps it is because I have been teaching for 27 years, but this book has nothing new to say and is not worth the price. Perhaps a new teacher would benefit from this book.

Tons of blah-blah to be honest. There is nothing you cannot find on internet for free.

Explains different personality types and divides mis-behavior into four understandable catergories. Gives real classroom examples (makes it easy to picture each "type" of kid) and you can even put kids you've taught into each category. Book discusses importance of following procedures and having class meetings. Explains HOW to do this as well. Gives examples of how a teacher reacts to situations and consequences for which direction teacher chooses. Book lists any discipline issue you can dream of and explains what each is, gives suggestions for how to handle it, has planning ahead to prevent future problems, and then gives inspirational stories. A terrific resource for every teacher!

The book is fine but it came with coffee stained pages. Pretty Gross.

This is a WONDERFUL method of managing behavior that is SO effective when the teacher can apply the principles! The premise is simple, and effective .If you respect children, and do not want humiliation or fear to be the motivators for classroom behavior.management THEN THIS IS IT!

If you are a Batman fan, most likely you are a fan of his biggest and baddest enemy The Joker. This is a fantastic book guiding you through the creation and the history of Gotham's worst menace. Excellent artwork and informative prose. This is a "no brainer" for the real Batman fan!

This book is so awesome, it has so much history of the Joker in works and picture and a lot of gems are in this book, not once have I regretted picking it up at all.The icing on the cake was seeing the forward written by the voice if the Joker himself, the legendary Mark Hamill. This is a great book and a must have for any Batfan or just a fan of the Joker

I bought this for my husband (a huge joker fan) for Christmas and he can't get over it. His dad loves it, all his friends love it... this is an amazing book for anyone who loves the joker. It's very extensive and colorful and makes a great coffee table book as well for anyone to pick up. I would highly reccommend.

Lets face it, if you are looking at this product, you are a nerd. This book is like the ultimate Wikipedia page of The Joker. The book is essentially a biography and encyclopedia of the best villain in the comic universe.

EXCELLENT read. The intro by Mark Hamill was superbly written. It does well as a coffee table book. The artwork and format are great, and you get to watch the evolution and psychological analysis of the world's most sinister villain.

Not quite what I expected more pictures than anything else was hoping it really had information about the creation and history of the Joker.

Bought this as an xmas gift for my batman obsessed boyfriend. He loved it! Its a great book, thick and pages are really sleek. He has always been a hardcore fan of the bat and his knowledge is extensive so i knew i had to be careful on what to buy, i didn't want a book full of stuff he already knew. This was perfect! He was glued to it xmas night

An intense , emotional , roller-coaster of a read.I was held captive, from the first chapter to the last.Real life ; we don't get do overs.There are few, if any second or third chances (and definitely no fourth) .Stories , like Vicious - This is why I read!

If you ever want to read about a woman being constantly referred to as Help while also being treated like trash this book is for you. Vic treats Emilia like actual garbage growing up because he's playing a game and she didn't even realize she was participating. And that somehow him treating her that way should be fine because he's a victim of abuse himself but, here's a newsflash: IT'S NOT. Being a victim yourself does not give you free reign to hurt other people. Not when you're 14 and definitely not when you're nearing 30.I really wish Emilia could've found someone else who deserved her because Vic did not. He didn't deserve any woman and neither do his friends who treat all women like warm wet holes until they're bored. To say I won't be reading any of the books after this is probably a given.

Wow! Vicious is sinfully sexy. You will feel all the emotions to guarantee you'll fall victim to Vicious. I could not put this book down until the end & I cannot wait to read the rest of the sinners in this series.

Vicious tormented Emilia and his friend, Dean, when they started dating. Vicious was an angry young man and was able to force Emilia to leave her family behind when she turned 18. 10 years later they meet by accident and Vicious is again trying to control Emilia's life by forcing her to meet his demands. Emilia is not in a financial position to fight him off long and finds herself drawn into his web again. After the things Vicious has said and done, Emilia still finds herself liking him more than she should. Vicious begins to pay for his actions and is surprised when he is willing to risk a lot in order to do right by Emilia. Emilia has been burned one too many times and does her best to protect her heart. I did like how Vicious plotted his revenge on those who did him wrong and waited patiently to effectuate it. I did not understand why he waited as long as he did, but it was interesting to see how his mind worked. Emilia discovers some of the secrets that Vicious has kept and does understand some of what drove him to be mean and vile to her. He does go above and beyond what he seemed capable of in order to prove his feelings for her are real. Did not quite get the dynamic between Dean and Vicious and it seemed like they didn't really like each other, each one going out of their way to emotionally damage the other. Will be interesting to see what happens to the next member of FHH.

This is a must read for those who love jerk heroes! Vicious and Emilia were absolutely awesome, and there was a GREAT grovel. I can't wait for the rest of the series <3 <3

OMG.....what can I say. I really, really wanted to hate Vic for all the horrible things he did, but I couldn't. He pulled on my heart strings like he did Emilia's. Douche doesn't even describe what he was. Emilia was his life line even when he didn't know it. I loved the way we got our background information without getting lost. What a great read!!

As Author Joanna Warrington puts it - A tale that will stir every emotion within you; this book is definitely that. There are sections that are amusingly heartwarming and parts that are dramatically devastating. As in life's sorted mysteries, nasty addictions, such as accessive gambling or other dependencies will and can often ruin a family. Ellie's quest to know more about her family led to many soul-searching family secrets and betrayals her auntie, Pandora's had difficulty revisiting. This is a book with a lesson to learn.

Great story with lots of drama and suspense, adventures that Pandora and sweet young Ellie came across on their trip especially with her brother who was nothing compared to what she thought. This book teaches a great lesson and is recommendable for anyone. Kudos to the writer!
