This memoir was probably the best one I've read from a German Army soldier, right beside "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer (which was a bit longer, more eloquent, and contained a bit more detail about his day-to-day ordeals facing the Russians). The fact that this memoir was written from the perspective of a Tiger tank commander on both the Eastern & Western fronts makes it especially valuable and rare.It is the perfect compliment to the J.J. Fedorowicz publication (from 2000) of "The Combat History of Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503" of which the author was a part (he also contributed heavily to this Fedorowicz volume, thus there is some duplication of information). There are many photos previously unpublished, as mentioned by other reviewers; some coming from the author's private collection and some from other surviving members of his unit.There are also numerous details that would assist military modelers such as the individual tank numbers of the Tigers in his company, things they carried on the outside of their tanks, and many interesting battle details from both fronts. I was particularly interested in the chapters on his experiences in the Normandy Campaign, one of my main areas of interest. But even the chapters on the Russian Front were fascinating and riveting.I found this book hard to put down, and how many times can one say that about a war memoir, particularly from a German soldier? The author had a keen eye for details of interest and writes in an engaging manner. It's almost as good as those I've read that were written by professional journalists.I am very glad this volume was translated from the original German edition, allowing me to happily add it to my personal library. I highly recommend it if you have even a passing interest in W.W. II and veteran accounts. As a German memoir it is one of the best and may be the best memoir of a Tiger tank commander. There just aren't that many out there. A rare gem!

I originally had been worried that this might be fiction pretending to be non-fiction having seen a Youtube video that described another book on Tiger Tanks as questionable. This is most certainly not the case here. The book is packed with photos of the author with panzers in various locations as s well as photos of different German military documents with his name.A most amazing book detailing whst it was like to be a commander of Tiger tanks. Certainly he was amazingly lucky to survive the war though he went from battle to battle to hospital and back to battle again. If you like tiger tanks, you are used to seeing the same photos used over and over again in different books. This books was filled with photos I had never seen before, sharp, high quality images. The number and quality of the photos alone are worth the price of the book. It is an extremely good read, well written, and exciting.

Richard von Rosen’s riveting and reflective combat memoir vividly conveys the frontline realities of different theatres of operations of the WW II. The narrative is told with the vivid detail of an impassioned eyewitness and his rare and moving memoir is a first person chronicle of nightmarish experiences.The book is divided into 10 chapters (with nice presentation of main events during the period described) and I was glad to see professional forewords by dr. Robert Forczyk and also the author.After the first chapter (“The second World War begins”), the author described in Chapter II’s 100 pages his first battles during the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa (“On the Eastern Front June – August 1941”). Operations at Stary Bychow, Breaking through the Stalin line or Battle for Roslav - where author was wounded for the first time - are excellent descriptions of the daily tanker’s life and sacrifices.Author’s convalescence and additional training are detailed in”My quiet time in the Reich (February 1942 - January 1943) before going “Back in Russia (January-May 1943)” as tank platoon leader to participate in the bitter fights for Rostov. The story of the Battle of Kursk -“Operation Zitadelle (June-July 1943) - includes the encounter with SU 152, stepping on a mine (engineer training before operation paid off) or his second wound on 14.07.1943.After another year, his unit was transferred to France to fight against Allied forces. The next two chapters, “The invasion Front, 1944” and “Operation Goodwood” are filled with Western Front experiences.“At Sennelager Camp (September-October 1944)” is a very short chapter about a training/reorganization period with more information from photos than text. One photo shows unteroffizer Kurt Knispel, tank ace at 23 years old with over 160 kills (KIA 28.04.1945).Chapter IX - “The Collapse (1944-1945)” describes the armored operations in Hungary (military coup included) and also the Battles for Gyongyos, Szolnok, etc. Wounded for the third time, Oblt. R. von Rosen is hospitalized in a Luftwaffe hospital in Bratislava.In the last three chapters “Military Hospital and the End of the War (February-July 1945)”, ”Home Again” and ”A prisoner of the French”, the author recalls the humiliation of defeat and surrender, but also the brutality of French occupation.Eventually, worth mentioning is the von Rosen’s resume at the end of book. Some photos have even some interesting (tactical) comments. Sometimes I found disturbing to start a narrative just to be interrupted by more than 10 pages of illustrations. I had to flip back several pages in order to remember the initial phrases. As throughout the text, the photo captions pay a special tribute to his former comrades and friends.The volume ends just with a short epilogue and no notes or index sections are provided.One of the more valuable WW II memoirs! Recommended!

I thought this was an excellent book. While not as "gripping" as other war memories, Von Rosen definitely has the credentials - surviving Kursk, the Goodwood carpet bombing in Normandy, and other harrowing events. The battle accounts were not as detailed as some, but still very interesting. The photos are excellent as well, which really make it 5 stars for me. I would like to know more about his post war career where he rose to rank of general in modern German army - but it isn't covered much in this book. I still recommend it.

A well written personal ww2 experience of great German soldier. The book also contains many excellent personal photos ,from author and coleges. I highly recommend this book for anybody who likes military history . Hardcovers for ever! Ken van wie

My guess is, less than 10% of readers will have the patience to follow directions and perfect these recipes at home, another 15-20% will make a stab at it and come away with a new appreciation of donut shops, and the rest of us will just enjoy the read and then go looking for a good donut store, maybe even Top Pot at the local airport. I do look forward to making that chocolate donut cake, though!

I have had the pleasure of visiting the Top Pot Doughnut shop in Seattle and the doughnuts were delicious.I have tried various internet recipes for making donuts which all have yielded an heavy dense product nothing like what you get in a doughnut shop.So I gave this book a shot.I made the triple coconut cake doughnut. It was divine. They were a little difficult to handle due to such a wet sticky dough but I have to say they were the epitome of what a cake donut should be and were far better than 90% of the doughnut shops I've been to.The directions though technical, are easy to follow but I will say that some degree of baking experience is really needed.I would suggest a person watch some doughnut making videos on you tube to get a grasp of the process.I do agree with others that the print could be better....larger and/or darker.I will post a photograph of the finished product.Thank you Top Pot for sharing your recipesUpdate 6/11/13-I have now made the raised donuts, apple fritters and blackberry fritters. I made 6 round donuts with part of the raised dough and then used the scraps for the fritters which worked out perfectly. The less you handle the dough, the better your product will be and it's very difficult to get a good donut from the scraps. They were fabulous.I did not use agar for the glaze but you really do not need it. I also made the coconut cake donuts again only this time I rolled the dough in a rectangle and cut it in 1 inch by 5 inch pieces and made donut sticks. I chilled them again before frying because they are much easier to handle. YUM!!

I was very excited to buy this book as I love Top Pot's donuts. I especially wanted to try the "old fashioned" donuts. I had a terrible time deciphering the recipe because the font was so small and someone at the publishing house thought it would be cool to use the least legible color ink they could find. There simply isn't enough contrast between the background and the recipes' typeface. Apparently the target audience for this book are people who appreciate form over function.I returned the book and bought "Donuts: Simple and Delicious Recipes to Make at Home" (also available at Amazon). I can actually read this book and enjoy using it.

I've made doughnuts at home a few times and its fun. I've been using a basic recipe for cake doughnuts from an old Fannie Farmer cookbook. Easy and tasty. I've also done yeasted doughnuts a few times from an Alton Brown recipe. again, easy and satisfying.But I wanted to go beyond the basics so I picked up this doughnut book. The recipes look great. They appear to be excellent examples of standard doughnut types, which is exactly what I was looking for.Figuring it would be a simple morning project, I made the very first recipe, the spiced cake doughnut. First, the good part. The end result was very tasty with crunchy exterior and soft crumb.But I had some problems. As the book, and others, have noted, this is a very soft, sticky dough. Extremely difficult to work with, and I did chill it first. Its probably the wet dough that results in the wonderful texture in the finished doughnut. The Fannie Farmer recipe I had been using much easier to handle, but creates not a dry, but a sturdier doughnut. I managed to get the doughnuts cut and the holes out, but the dough just fell apart once I picked it up to put it in the oil. I ended up with a bunch of misshapen pieces of fried dough. Towards the end I did get one reasonable looking doughnut. I read another reviewer carefully transported the uncooked doughnuts with a spatula and I might try that. I think this dough can work but it must take a lot of practice. Fine for the doughnut shop but a lot of trouble for the home cook.I like to bake and have struggled with wet doughs before. It can be frustrating for anyone and for the casual home cook I worry this recipe will cause tears. Next time I make these doughnuts I'm going to try cutting back on the milk a bit. Perhaps 1/4 cup less. I figure I'll be losing a bit on texture for the sake of getting doughnuts made without so much cursing.Something else that struck me was the recipe yield. It said 12 doughnuts but I only got 6. So I checked my doughnut cutter. Mine is 3.5 inches. It is the Ateco model that is a best seller on amazon. It makes cake doughnuts the same size I've ever seem from any doughnut shop.But the recipe says to use a 2.75 inch cutter. Earlier, the book says "A traditional doughnut cutter has two concentric rings, one 2 3/4 in/7 cm across and one 1 1/4 in/3 cm in diameter." They are in the doughnut business, not me. And I'll try it with the smaller cutter. and get more doughnuts. But isn't a 2.75" cutter going to make a really small doughnut? and where do I get a 2.75 inch cutter. On amazon I see 2.5 inch cutters. If I search for 2.75 inch all I find are flimsy type doughnut cutter with the removable center hole.After cutting these doughnuts I swore I would throw the book away. But after I tasted the cooked doughnuts I decided I should persevere. I hope to make more doughnuts from the book and I will try to post updates here.

While I did not find what I was searching for, these recipes I am sure will more than satisfy any doughnut lovers. If you are careful about following directions your final product will be pretty much like what you might find at your local doughnut shop. They include recipes for glazes and fillings as well. The flavor and texture never disappoint.Husband loved the plain ones, I enjoyed the fresh blueberry ones, and my youngest son was in it for the chocolate doughnuts. I did cheat and use half the batter one day and the rest the next day. Didn't seem to affect the quality at all.I can not imagine anyone being truly disappointed unless they miss something in the recipe. For best results, use an electronic scale for measuring the ingredients. And do not be tempted to add a lot of flour because it is sticky. The result will be heavy, dense doughnuts.Enjoy!

This was because it would have taken attention away from Jesus. The wonders of Mary are contained in this little book, almost as well as they are in the four volume set. When she entered Egypt, with St. Joseph and the Baby Jesus, escaping from Herod, the idols of the Egyptians fell apart. On the voyage to the isle of Patmos, with St. John the Evangelist, fish stood upright in the ocean.....so many of them that the boat had to stop. And so much is footnoted with a Bible passage, and, sure enough. I checked it out as I read. It is there.Mary of Agreda is now laying in her coffin.......incorruptible. She can be seen on line, and, has been called 'Sleeping Beauty'

Beautiful books! I'm still reading the first book and will be bringing this on my beach vacation. Better to read a little bit every day to ponder on the wealth of information! I will enjoy reading these for years to come! Mary of Agreda was very blessed by God to receive these insightful visions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

I purchased a used set of the Mystical City of God, volumes 1 through 4, and although their bindings are slightly worn, their pages are perfect and in excellent condition. I'm almost done with the first volume, and it's been such a blessing to read. By the way, one of the many things I've learned so far, is that the "City of God" is the Lord's own name for our Blessed Mother. This will be an incredible journey.

I bought these books almost a year ago and have almost finished reading them through for the 2nd time. I usually read just one chapter a day to let each one soak in. I am so thankful that I ran across these books. I intend to continue reading them from now on until all of these mysteries and messages from Our Lady are forever engrained in my memory because they are so important. It surprises me that when reading them for the second time, how many of the details I had forgotten but the second time through provides an even deeper richness of the beauty of this history. I am often brought to tears of love and thanksgiving. I can't recommend these enough for those thinking of purchasing them. They will change your life and bring you closer to the Holy Family, the apostles, the angels and give you a deeper appreciation for the Catholic Church founded by Christ and the grace He offers us through the Sacraments to help us one day be with Him in Heaven.I also highly recommend Maria of Agreda: Mystical Lady in Blue by Marilyn H. Fedewa. It is the biography of the nun who chronicled this life of Our Lady. Her life in itself was amazing and filled with much hardship as she accepted the request from Jesus and Mary to record this history. I often pray for her canonization so that more will be inspired to read Mystical City of God--a true treasure and gift from God.

While the original work of which this is a translation, La mística ciudad de Dios, provides fascinating insights into the perception of the Virgin Mary within the Catholic church at its time (and, as evidenced by the other reviews provided, can be spiritually uplifting for those of such a mindset, However, this translation leaves a great deal to be desired. The original grammar and sentence structure are lost, subtly altering the message and feel of the work. There are also a number of clear errors as the translator attempts to interpret and clarify the work. For example, in the first volume, there is an instance in which this translation states that there are three principles demonstrated in a specific section of the text, though it is difficult to discern three discrete principles. The original Spanish makes no mention of the number three nor any number in particular.In general, if you intend to study this work and have the ability, studying it in the original Spanish is a significantly more satisfying experience.

I am only half way through the first volume, but I read every chance I can, this book is that compelling. I consider it a singular grace from God to be able to read this and an even greater grace to know I am learning truths very few souls will ever be blessed enough to know. If you Love Our Lord and His Blessed Mother you will want to read this. Think of it as, " Advanced Catholicism".I have finished reading all four volumes, about 2800 pages. I intend to go back and highlight explanations that should help me be a better Catholic and Disciple of Jesus living in Mary. It is a true blessing to read these words, and it is a miracle that four centuries later it is still in print, is available in English in both hard cover and Paperback. While not holy scripture it illuminates the Scriptures and helps explain the many mysteries of God's church, One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic. It probably helps that I did The Total Consecration to Mary and read the writings of St. Louis De Monfort before reading this excellent work. After the Holy Gospels and the New Testament scriptures I could not imagine a work that Lucifer and the demons of hell would despise more than this.UPDATE . . . I am half way through Volume 3 of 4, nothing I already said has been changed, except that I am privileged beyond reason to learn such truths and wisdom, and I am unquestionably the lowest of God's creation, lower even than the dust and filth from which God formed me because the filth has never sinned against God, and I have sinned in thought, word and deed more times than I can count. May God have mercy and grant that I atone whenever possible for those infinite offenses against the omnipotent goodness that sustains me, My Lord and My God. Seek God above and before all things, nothing in this world is worth anything except that we find God by the immensely powerful graces He bestows on us through the intercession of His Holy Mother.

I started this book a few months after my husband went on to be with The Lord. Scott, my husband, and I have always been picked on and complimented about how much we smile all the time. We didn't always realize this was God blessing us...especially in times of trials, but through Him we smiled through it all. When I started this book I called everyone I knew and told them to get it. Most did and are happy I suggested it. Now I tell you, you won't be sorry. Your heart will be lifted. Thank you Joel for taking time to write Every Day a Friday: How to be Happier 7 Days a Week. Through my days of mourning (after 42 years of marriage) my loss, I'm still smiling remembering all the blessings God gave us and seeing more pouring out over me. God is love and God is kindness. Enjoy His blessing while you get to bless others. This is a great read!!!!

Joel Osteen is brilliant! He must've researched for a very long time in the writing of this book because he has addressed every problem, challenge and obstacle that we face in every day life. This book stays right next to my bed for quick reference whenever I am feeling low. I like how he not only offers encouragement to face problems, but he offers personal stories and references the Bible to back up his advice. For some reason we tend to think that people of faith never have a bad day and to hear his personal struggles and how he rose above life's daily drama brings a positive message to everyone. There are spiritual awareness reads and then there is Joel Osteen. Out of all the books I've read and reviewed, over the years, I cannot seem to get enough of the awesome messages he sends to his readers. Everyday a Friday assisted me with refocusing on my current situation. Often, we feel that in life that we are not in a "good place." Some of us start to feel as if we have failed in life due to not achieving personal lifelong goals. Completing this book was the affirmation I needed for this year of 2014.I am now on a daily mission to identify "a positive" attribute from the entire parameter of my being. I am learning to be happy during both the sweet and sour days of my time here on earth. The people who are in my life are the ones who are supposed to be there. Individuals who are not have simply served their purpose in my life and have moved on. In regards to jealous hearted individuals, one of my favorite sections of this book comes from chapter twenty-seven. Osteen's words are listed as follows, "When they come at you, simply say, in a humble way "I'm wearing this blessing well, despite criticism and jealously." If my friends aren't happy for my blessing then, it's time to find new friends who will celebrate with me as I celebrate with them."In life one will eventually seek for a sign or message of hope from either a self-help or spiritual read. The words enclosed within this book were just what I needed to let me know that I'm on the right path. Joel Osteen books rock!

We need to have positive attitudes when we go to work, when we deal with members of our family or when we think we are lacking things in our life, such as finding that special someone or paying off debt, or getting well.Chapter 6 deals with keeping "The Right Perspective." And that is exactly what we need to do. As Joel states, "It's easy to focus on what's wrong in your life, what you don't have, and how big your obstacles are. But if you are not careful, you will lose sight of all the good things God has done for you. Don't take for granted the family, friends, and opportunities He has blessed you with. If you're in such a hurry and so stressed that you fail to appreciate the gift of today, you'll lose your joy and ability to be happy every day of the week." In other words if you are facing a difficult situation, try to realize that it's only temporary, that God will see you through your tumultuous experience, and remember, You can do all things through Christ, He strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).Don't let the Devil and his demons steal your joy, use "the healing power of laughter" to cure your summertime blues. In chapter 20, Joel talks about the St. Joseph's Medical Center in Houston, Texas using humor rooms for patient therapy. "The St. Joseph's staff found that visits to the humor room led to many patients (checking out of the) hospital sooner because it helped relieve (their) symptoms." Laughter has a tendency to release hormones such as dopamine throughout the body, which helps with the healing process. Think of dopamine as God's heavenly prescription for pain.Overall, Joel's book prepares you for the battlefield of the mind; it will help you combat depression. Think of it this way, depending on Jesus is practical medicine, it's much better than using synthetic drugs such as Abilify, Ativan or Zoloft and it's cheaper too, as a matter of fact it costs nothing. Remember man made cures are only temporary, God's Grace is eternal. Also, Joel said in a sermon aired on Television sometime ago, "Wear your blessings well!" and "When it gets tough and things don't look like they'll work out, you can laugh by faith, knowing that God has already written the final chapter." Remember God always has the last world and He is Love personified (1 John 4:16).If we help others to achieve their goals and pursue their dreams then we are accomplishing the Lord's will and when we do that we are in sync with His purpose, we become simpatico with the Holy Spirit that dwells in us. "There is no greater legacy than to help someone else win." Also, "What makes you great is when you reach back and help somebody else become great." Joel stresses the issue of faith and charity, loving people into repentance and the pursuit of their God given dreams and aspirations.The story of Jesse Owens and Luz Long is mentioned on page 223 of this book and how they became friends in spite of Hitler and the Nazi party's racism. "I've found the greatest legacy is not what we leave for people, but what we leave in people." Luz Long invested in Jesse Owens success during the Olympics and Luz gained the most precious gift of all, a friend.We must see "through (the) eyes of love." "Instead of being critical and writing others off, take time to get to know them." Moreover, "don't have a critical spirit." Also, Jesus stated in Matthew 22:39 "Love your neighbor as you do yourself." Jesus also demonstrates this message in Luke chapter 19:1-9 when Jesus befriended the Tax collector Zacchaeus. Jesus didn't condemn him; instead he loved him into repentance. That's what we have to do if we're going to live out the destiny God has planned for us. For you see, forgiveness isn't only for the trespasser, it's also for the injured party. A case in point: "When Jesus rose from the dead and came back to talk with His disciples, He said, `If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sin of any, they are retained' (John 20:23 NKJV). When you retain a sin, you hold on to it. God was saying that when you hold on to the wrongs people have done to you, then the poison contaminates you. When you don't forgive, it's easy to become what you hate."There is a lot of pragmatic wisdom throughout this book. God definitely anointed Joel Osteen and he's given him a very difficult assignment by making him the greatest preacher of the modern ages, allowing His message to be propagated through Lakewood Church ministries. What a responsibility and gift!Everyday a Friday as far as I'm concerned is his best work yet. Our world leaders need to read this book and apply it to domestic and world affairs. Whether anyone believes it or not this book is a powerful polemic against nihilism and social disorder.The Republicans and the Democrats need to read this book.

Far more detailed about horses - english and western equipment, breeds, etc. - than expected. A hit with both the 3 and 5 year old. Even the horsey-adults seemed interested.

My toddler loves Dr. S and horses so this book was perfect for them. Surprisingly very education. Purchased used on Amazon and it was near perfect quality.

I liked the book ok, but the title doesn't reflect the content of the book. I thought the book would be about how someone thought a horse show should be run. No. It was just about different horse breeds and colors. A really cute book for kids, but wrong title.

I breed and show horses....always looking for kids horsey books now that I'm a grandmother. This one was perfect and we all read it out loud even before showing it to my grandson. Reads just like a classical Dr Seuss book, and horse lovers will enjoy it. Very educational and accurate of colors, breeds, etc.

The whole family loves this book. Daughter and I are learning to ride together. Her Aunt and Grandparents have been horse folk their whole lives, and were surprised how much content on horse breeds this book had that they did not know. Love that the new Dr. Seuss books are as educational as they are fun to read. Very pleased!

Bought this book for my 5-YO granddaughter's birthday, who is already big time into horses - "gallops" around the house and whickers for yes (sir/ma'am), snorts for no. She loves it.

Combining Dr. Seuss and horses is a win-win situation. This is a fun book, excellent illustrations and a hit with children.

First of all, when someone named Martin Taylor does a book about guitars, you gotta pay attention! I am just beginning to get into playing jazz guitar. I consider myself an intermediate guitar player (4 1/2 years, DVD/on-line taught) and prefer mostly fingerstyle classical and early rock (can't sing worth a hoot, so strumming a song is lost on me). Martin takes you through many examples that at first all look alike.... but each example sneakily builds on the previous one until you get that 'WOW!' moment when the 'I can't do that' becomes 'I now know it cold... along with the theory as to why and how it works'. Don't fret... the theory also sneaks in with no pain. Anyone looking to expand their musical repertoire as well as theory should get this book today.

This is a very dense book. By that I mean that there is a great deal of useful information packed into its pages. It feels as though Taylor is "overlaying" different topics in a way that reinforces them and helps to build skills that extend beyond the specific topic covered. I use this book several times per week in my studies, and I think it's making me a better guitar player. My one wish is that this book had been available forty or fifty years ago.

The most approachable guide to the guitar I have ever read. I’ve been playing guitar for roughly 30 years and I have never come across a more efficient way to approach the guitar neck. Forget drop-2 and drop-3 voicings and go straight to Martins genius approach to explain jazz chord building. Absolutely genius!

I have played guitar for long time but stopped for even longer time. I decided to start again and this time with proper starting point and instructions. I came across this book in Amazon. It leads me to youtube. I'm instantly hooked with the style of play. I decided to buy kindle edition. So far it serves me well. Book explains detail very clear and not too fast for newbie like me. I am also eyeing another book from this author but plan to finish this one first.I give it 4 stars for now and hope to come back and add another star.

As a long standing fan of Martin Taylor's instructional material I thoroughly enjoyed this little book - informative, concise, inspiring and above all great fun to work through. A great sequel to the Martin Taylor Guitar Method which breaks down the complexity of jazz guitar into easy to understand foundational concepts.

Martin Taylor's book Beyond Chord Melody is not only insightful, but essential, especially to guitarists looking to expand their performance opportunities to include solo playing. Hobbyists will get a great deal from the book also. I have been doing solo jazz guitar gigs as a part of my repertoire for 25 years. I have been a huge fan of Martin's for about 15 years. His "approach" to developing solo guitar repertoire is unique and spot on. The Fundamental Changes book itself is crafted with the highest quality. Everything in this book is relevant. Get it!

Must read for any military leader. We have a problem with toxic leadership, and I can confirm the author's assessment of the toxicity in this command. While I wasn't there, I worked for two of the people involved after they had been PROMOTED and sent to the pentagon.

"Black Hearts" is a brilliant description of combat as seen through the eyes of Bravo Company in the darkest days of the Iraq War. It serves as a case study for the negative impacts of poor leadership in today's Army and the general effects of heavy combat on young and strung-out soldiers.Frederick tells his story masterfully, obviously passionate about his subject, but remaining subjective enough to where he is able to describe things in such a manner that the reader is able to make their own decisions. This story is nothing short of a tragedy, and by the end, the reader is absolutely appalled at much of the cast of characters, many of whom work to bring about a series of horrible events for all parties involved.. The description of daily life is unbelievable for anyone who thinks they knew what the war was like for American troops. The multi-day stints at poorly defended checkpoints manned by three or four privates with zero supervision is something I didn't realize happened. The descriptions of combat are also top-notch, particularly one very gripping passage about the mental anguish soldiers faced while simply driving around, wondering if each second would be their last at the hands of a massive IED.Many characters in the story are sympathetic, generally at the platoon or company level, while the battalion level leadership is shown to be infuriatingly incompetent. I was especially incensed at the end, where you find out (SPOILER ALERT) that Kunk was promoted to colonel and Bravo's sympathetic yet clearly incompetent commander is an operations officer somewhere in the Army. Frederick doesn't make these judgements, but it is difficult not to make them yourself, for right or wrong. The abduction of US troops and the murder of an Iraqi family, while horrifying in their own right and very well described, are almost caveats to the overall story about this ill-fated group of men trying to survive their year in Iraq.Overall, this is an incredible book that serves to show a lot of what was (and still is) wrong with the Army's senior leadership. Still, even though there are antagonists at every level here, Frederick isn't indicating the US Army; there are good guys too, and plenty of them, which the author makes extremely clear. I'm glad to see the Army is taking this book seriously and using it as a learning tool for its leaders. This is a hugely important book and I can't thank Jim Frederick enough for writing it.

The fog of war at its worst. Black Hearts is the story of poor command and bad judgement. An indictment of the armies chain of command that led to a total breakdown of moral responsibility. The characters are real and sickening, anyone who served with honor and dignity must read this as the very worst in military leadership. The fact Kunk is still in the military is a disgrace.

This is a good book to tell the story of First Strike and the events surrounding the rape of the 14 yr old Iraqi girl, Abeer. It is also a story of mismanagement that goes all the way to the top and Rumsfeld's saying you go to war with the army you have when it was obvious we were not using all of our army. Instead the troops were told to do more with less. This does not excuse misconduct and rape/murder. As usual these were crimes of opportunity. When this story first came out, Green was portrayed as the leader and instigator of the crime. He participated for sure especially in the murders but the initial rape idea was not his. Also, the initial stories portrayed the Army as trying to cover this up. That is not true. And these impressions sold by the media are corrected in this book.

There are two reasons I purchased this book. The first is that enough time has passed in the Iraq War that a well-researched author can start to provide some historical perspective on the various events of the war (including how unspeakable war crimes like this one can happen). The second is that I have known the author personally, though I've not spoken with him in well over a decade (we attended one of the same schools). People change as they go through life of course... The whole point of my stating this is to drive home the point that I have no agenda here and have never spoken to Jim about any professional project, including this one.I simply discovered a book on Amazon that covers a subject I wanted to know more about, which happens to be written by an old classmate whom I always respected. Jim Frederick the editor was always honest, extremely diligent in his research and preparations for a project, and he was tireless. It seems, based on what I found in this book, Jim has lost none of those traits as an author. He has much to be proud of......I have to confess: I rarely read books of this length and when I do, it often takes me a good month to finish. Despite best intentions, my attention wanders or I get lazy and turn on the TV, etc. I read this book in 4 days. The story that Jim conveys is equal parts dismaying, tragic, and anger-inducing. There were even a few moments of muffled laughter as I tried to keep quiet while my wife slept (Army types are nothing if not supremely gifted with the expletives). But it was the kind of laughter you feel when you gather with friends and family after an unexpected death and start exchanging stories... you don't want to laugh because (in this case), what's happening through the 9 or so months of the deployment is anything but good, but somehow the mind copes with laughter. I would laugh and immediately feel regret because of what these men were dealing with on a daily basis (and surely many others like them in both Iraq and Afghanistan). Today, when I read "Allied soldiers killed in _____," it evokes a different reaction than it did 5 days ago. I was always sad to hear the news (and appreciative of their sacrifices), but now I am appreciative in a different way.What I love about this book:1) You get to know the men of Bravo... to understand from the moment they deployed until after it was over, what happened to them as individuals, and as a team that slowly became dysfunctional. You start to see the men for who they are, including several of the commanding officers. Mind you these are NOT judgements the author makes. Like any good journalistic writer, he laid out the facts as he understood them, so the reader can judge for themselves. To be honest, I'm not sure how he remained detached in his writing; I doubt I could have.2) The gritty details: the heated dialogs; the total frustration of the men; the things they did every day; even the geography, poverty and unpredictability of the place they served. This is the right way to "keep it real" without going overboard or letting it become a gratuitous exercise in "shock value". In an ideal world, Jim should assemble a team to research and write an hour's worth of news for us every week; we'd all be a hell of a lot more educated and better off for it. So refreshing to skip the fluff, the vapid soundbites, and the spin that the mainstream (especially television) media crams down our throats. I learned more about the Iraq war in the last 4 days reading this book than the last four YEARS of watching the news. That says something both about the author and our television media. If you want to learn anything substantial, turn off the television and READ.3) Gaining a better understanding of modern warfare... the confusion, the valor, the locals, the incompetence, all of it. You learn real quick the military is not the simple machine we are taught to believe, with four cogs or moving parts (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) and everyone following orders all of the time. The human dynamics are laid bare and suddenly you understand: these aren't automatons... they are (mostly) well-meaning, dedicated, flawed, sometimes fearless, or even selfish and scared human beings. War is not only hell; it is human chaos and this book shows you why.What could have been better:1) The book was a bit difficult to follow in a few spots, partly because I don't have a great understanding of military hierarchies, and partly because there is quite a bit of back and forth as events unfold. It can be confusing to know who was where on the "org chart", who was responsible for which guys, etc. The good news is there is information in the back of the book about how the Army units are subdivided from Division down to the squad level, including typical ranks of those who lead each unit... but you don't know it's there until the end. Similarly there were only a couple maps. I think if the Army backgrounder were shown near the start of the story somewhere, and there were maps and pictures interspersed throughout (this was likely a publisher decision based on budgets and printing press issues), it would have been easier to follow.2) Almost too large a cast of characters, however it is almost unavoidable because in order to truly understand the dynamic --which guys' decisions are acting upon the other players and what results-- you have to cover many people and understand their take on things as the story evolves.3) Some chapters skip around too much. You get into one line of thinking, following a particular squad of guys, and then suddenly you jump to something (as a lay person) that seems unrelated, but which may not be. IOW it can be difficult to connect the dots at certain points. But never so much so that you lose the big picture; that sticks with you well after you put the book down for the night... that's why I read this in 4 days. I genuinely *needed* to understand what was happening as things lead up to this nightmare.Overall, the minor flaws of this book are easily overlooked IMO. If you stick with it you will be rewarded with a better understanding of how it is these men and women sacrifice for their country (and for another country), as well as a better understanding of the military and how war crimes like this can take place. Definitely recommended if you have an interest in these types of subjects. This is NOT a work of fiction in any sense of the word, and is not about "entertainment", so if that's what you're looking for, go read whichever author has displaced Tom Clancy as the military novelist of the day (I honestly don't know the answer to that question). :)
