The folks at Headwater Books acknowledged that Pennsylvania has too much area to be covered comprehensively by one writer. Hence they drew on the experiences of nine authors, each of whom wrote specifically on the waters of their home regions and their particular areas of interest. Even then many worthwhile venues were not mentioned. Covering them all was impossible, so the editors wisely elected to present a representative sampling of the many opportunities available. There was also a recognition that fly fishing encompasses more than just the pursuit of trout. Not everyone in the Keystone State lives near great trout streams. Residents of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia must drive considerable distances to reach prime cold water fisheries. For them, fishing those rushing, crystalline mountain flows and fertile mid-state limestone streams is best reserved for occasions when there's time to get away for a few days. Fortunately, persons living in all of our major cities are blessed with plentiful, and superb, warm-water fisheries nearby. I was pleased to see more than lip service paid to bass, panfish, pike and even some rough fishing. This book could have benefited significantly from the inclusion of a few more maps, but the ones it has are very good. Again, there's too much area to effectively show the whole commonwealth in a single volume. The editor admitted as much when he suggested that the best way to extract the most information from this book is to pair it with a DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer, or even better, detailed topographic maps of the areas you are most interested in. Some of those brookie sheltering headwaters are mighty small and hard to find! It should be noted that the directions given in the text are generally quite good. This is a valuable addition to the libraries of persons who desire to maximize their angling adventures in a state that has more to offer than most.

I have purchased numerous fly fishing books throughout the years and this one is without a doubt the most valuable resource for providing essential information on fishing each of these Pennsylvania streams. While I mainly fly fish for trout, it was an added benefit to have the information provided by stream experts on fly fishing the warm waters of Pennsylvania for smallmouth.

Very in-depth review of the many great trout streams in PA. including how to get there and what to expect upon arrival. Somewhat optimistic about the types and variety of fly hatches to be found in many of the streams but it gives the fly fisherman many things to look for while on the stream. A very good reference to carry and keep handy when out scouting new territory. It's up to date and I highly recommend buying it.

A gift for a friend who fly fishes, he loves it, fishing spots are arranged geographically so easy to locate areas depending on where you live or travel.

I was able to learn new access points and other information about the type of water in different sections of a river I usually fish. Multiply that knowledge for one river by a ton of other rivers I've wanted to try in PA and this book is a bargin

Have you ever wondered what it means to read Japanese Fairy Tales are like?If you are like me, and used to European Fairy Tales, then these will seem a little different, namely, when the hero comes in and does his heroly deed, he doesn't simply marry the princess and live happily ever after, or ride off with his sidekick into the sunset. Apparently, the Japanese need a little more closure about the remaining life of the hero, so there are about 5-10 obligatory pages chronicling the fame and fortune of the hero before the actual ending of the book. This makes the stories seem a bit long winded and fluffy at first, but you get used to it after a while. Its true that the kindle freebie version is a bit lacking in format and spell checking, but this didn't bother me because I paid 99 cents for it.

Thirty-eight wonderful, imaginative tales some of my favorites including "The Peony Lantern" for it's sad story of the master's hunt for his lost love, "The Robe of Feathers" for it's description of the fairies and the lightness of their tread upon the sand and "The Jelly-Fish Takes a Journey" for the humorous exchange between jelly-fish and monkey. Kindle version has an active table of content so you can read any of the tales in any order you choose. I only wish that the book had been illustrated as this one seems to be made for it. Really enjoyable!

I'm a fan of Japanese "things" and thought i could tell my grandkids some of these at bedtime. Some are certainly not for bedtime and i think two are Chinese, not Japanese. No matter, they are great stories just the same. I read the whole thing at one shot (over 3 days) and still remember some of them. Definitely older fairy tales, unless you have a decent understanding of their history and thought processes, might be a bit confusing as to why this guy did these things or why a dragon laying across the road is commonplace.Will be reading these to the young'uns and have already told the older kids some of the better ones. Will read again

Well-translated and written book. The stories were very interesting, but I gave this book 5 stars because it was formatted well. There's many books for Kindle that show poor formatting and amateurish writing skills. Not this book. I'm very glad to have bought it and will keep it permanently in my virtual bookshelf for friends and family.

Thanks to a Good reads challenge, I was encouraged to find and read fairy tales from a different culture. These Japanese tales fit the bill. I had never heard of fairy tales from Japan, so was pleased to find these. The tales were entertaining, though not always satisfying. The endings of some left the reader hanging.I was able to purchase audible for the book, which made the reading even more enjoyable.Open your horizons and experience Japanese Fairy Tales.

I have a Kindle on my Samsung Galaxy S, and on my Google Nexus 7, and on my PC. All three versions of this book look great and are well formatted. Perhaps there were issues with previous releases or with earlier versions of Kindle. I know a LOT of Shakespeare was really messed up in Kindle formats (due to the style of the theatrical text formatting).This is a collection of Japanese folk tales more than anything. The stories collected here are among the most popular. They are varied and quite enjoyable. I actually started reading this due to my interest in Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world - basically Japanese wood block prints). Many of the Ukiyo-e artists had themes centered on characters and events from these tales. I was surprised that even the very first story was spot on with the summary under one of Yoshitsune's prints. Even the second story was one that was familiar to me.The tales all seem to have a lesson or moral to learn. They are quick reads and quite enjoyable. Most are what I would consider appropriate for all ages, though in the manner of many international tales, there is a bit of violence here and there. But what child doesn't remember the famous tale of humpty dumpty and the violent crash.Best of all it's free to download!

This is a book of fairy tales from Japan. I enjoyed reading the stories, and appreciated places where there were notes to explain some words that are difficult to translate. There are a few typographical errors but these are minor and it is easy to figure out what the typist mean to enter. I do recommend this for people interested in other cultures.

We downloaded this book for our weekend getaway trip, and it was the best decision. There are 22 stories, between 9 and 30 minutes long. The stories are great, with lots of details and no sugar coating. They reminded me of old Russian fairy tales. My 9 year old kept asking to turn it back on whenever I needed to pause for one reason or the other.

I bought this book for my son's sixth birthday. We are always looking for "science stuff" to do. I'm sure there are zillions of experiments and such online, but I never seem to find them when I need them. This book is packed with probably 40 really fun experiments that are perfect for a kid his age. I went to the store and loaded up on supplies for the book and we are having a blast going through it. Highly recommended!

I'm a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) professional (a bio-engineer in my particular case). A huge part of why I'm the person I am today is because of an early exposure to really engaged and involved teachers (and my parents) who continually reinforced my natural curiosity about physics and chemistry and natural sciences.I really love seeing science books aimed at younger audiences with fun (safe!) experiments which encourage kids to explore and reason and learn while having fun. I could definitely see these experiments being used in a classroom setting or as part of a homeschooling unit.At the beginning of the book, before the experiment sections is a general intro with safety information as well as an encouragement to keep notes in a lab notebook (and refer back to them). There is also a link for downloading the lab charts which appear in the book.The lab experiments are arranged in 5 sections with labs which explain and support each concept. The five sections are: Energy basics, Forms of Energy and Energy Transformations, Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy Sources, Using Energy, and Saving Energy.Each of the 40 lab experiments begin with ingredients list and safety notes. The labs are very well illustrated with numerous photographs. They support the section concepts very well with items which are easily found or acquired.The end of the book has a good resource section with a list of websites for additional information and research as well as a short author bio and a little info on the NEED (national energy education development) project.Four starsDisclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.

Energy is one of my favorite science topics and this book guides you through teaching it to children beautifully through hands on activities that kids can understand. It covers energy basics, different forms of energy, how to use energy, and more! I love it! *I was given this book in exchange for an honest opinion, which this is.

Studying energy in our homeschooling, this is a FANTASTIC book! Every experiment is written and organized well. Materials lists are clear and typically dont need a mountain of stuff or odd ball/expensive things you'd have to preorder. I have found the time estimates accurate. Each experiment has been fun and informative. I have and have looked at many experiment books and this is head and shoulders better than most/all. A definate buy if youre on the fence as I bought after first finding at our local library. Its definately something we will use again and again, even if it was just for fun activities. I could easily see a regular school parent using this to keep their kiddos science mind and thinking skills sharp over a break time. :) It is fun for all and most take >5min prep.

I have a 14 yr old son who struggles to read. So when his high school assigned this book, I was concerned. His school does have read aloud in class, but this was summer reading that he had to get done.I decided we would do a read aloud at home each day. I totally enjoyed this with him. As we read each day with dedicated time set aside, we dove into this book. It was an easy book to get into and pulled into the characters. The book touched based on social issues of kids who have it all and then the kids who have nothing. Family issues of internal bullying, and learning what's really important no matter the cost of loved ones. Learning about heroes and who really is a hero. There's just so much in this book that anyone that went to a public/private school can relate to.Also, I loved the fact that each day I read aloud, my other children and even my husband became engrossed in the story. It gave us much to talk about and they looked forward to each day of reading time. Sometimes, we'd even run past our dedicated time. That was fine with me! I loved it! Oh and yes, this does have audible access, but there is something about reading aloud with your kids that builds a great opportunity to connect and discuss things that you normally don't get. The conversations were wonderful and insightful.If you are reading this for school, I did find some great graphic organizers out there that assisted my son, and those help keep him even more engaged and a much better retention of information with these organizers.

My grandson read this book for one of his middle school classes and liked it so much he insisted that I should read it too. It's a story about how our personalities and actions are shaped by what we are told about ourselves and about the past. It also deals with how we can change when we learn that what we are told wasn't the way things really are/were.

Truly impossible to put down. The reason this old lady loved the book? I taught high school for years and loved it! The book took me back and reminded me why teaching is the greatest job! They pay you to do what you would gladly volunteer to do.

I just finished reading this book tonight. My 13 year-old grandson was assigned Tangerine to read in his 7th grade English class. He thanked the teacher for having them read it. He asked if I would read it and I did hesitatingly . . . I am a voracious reader, at least two or three books weekly and over 300 in the last two years. I didn't want to waste my time on a 7th grade book assignment. And then I thought, this book is/was important to him . . . I'm willing to read it.Wow, I cried, I laughed, I cried and laughed and cried some more. What a wonderful book for all teens to read . . . along with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family members. I learned so much about Tangerine and the plights of the area, but more importantly the plights of teenagers in their lives in today's world. A `normal' family (if there is such a thing) two children, one truly gifted and one was . . . well, I'm not going there and spoiling the whole wonderful experience you will have while you read it.I, like several other reviewers, can't resist recommending it to everyone I know. Including, but not limited to, a Purple Heart recipient and a Commander on a very large city police department; not to mention a doctor and several other healthcare givers along with all friends and acquaintances.I want to thank the teacher, personally, for her wonderful assignment of Tangerine, along with my grandson, who has the intelligence to know a good book when he reads it! I can't wait for our conversations to begin.Thank you Edward Bloor for a fantastic read, also Danny De Vito for your insight in your Introduction to this mesmerizing book.

I had no idea what to expect when I purchased this book - from its cover, I thought it may be some sort of Gaiman/Gorey-type of fantasy novel.This phenomenal tale of a middle-school aged boy and his family was one THE BEST fictional works I've read this year.This novel's numerous subjects - family dynamics, family secrets, sports/competition (in particular, the middle-school/high school/college/pro sports "track"/"rat race"/"money chase," social class disparities, pressures on middle-class families, economic disparities, work-ethic, the environment, school "pecking order, physical and mental health disabilities, etc. - all blend together to create a fascinating look at a slice of modern American life.I don't know if this book is supposed to be in the "young adult"/"pre-teen"/"high school" category - I DO know that this 55 year-old "card-carrying AARP member" thoroughly enjoyed it.

Need this for 7th grade English. It's a classic for them. They haven't actually started it yet, but my son, who is in high school now, still has his marked up copy. He's done several purges of his shelves, but it is still there.Update-my daughter finished the book and quite enjoyed it. Her class had an online interview with the author, and she is said that there is not going to be a sequel.

I was taking turns reading this book with my grandson whom is in junior high. He could listen to the story and get some of his other work done too. After he took over in reading, I had to download the book and finish it for myself. The book reminded me of my childhood years. I like when the book picked up in pace in the middle and the end. It also provides good morals and hope if you feel bullied by a sibling. This book was good for all ages. It was a great story and touched me personally.

One Happy Tiger makes you happy just from the beautiful illustrations. It's essentially a counting book but it's so well made and I know we'll cherish it for a long time. My 13 month old immediately took to it. Some of the things to count are a little hard for a toddler to see (eg 7 raindrops) but I'm sold on the illustrations and maybe little one developing attention to detail is a good thing!

My toddlers and I love this book. It helps with counting, the sentences used are appealing even for older kids, and the illustrations are beautiful.

Very popular with the little boys that I bought it for.

Good book for grandsons. Well illustrated, good story line. Sent in a timely manner and well packaged. Thank you
