Well, how to apply it correctly, at least. The goal in this book is to provide a primer on what Ajax is, why you might use it, and how to implement it properly.To achieve this goal, I took one example Web application, for managing employees in departments, and "Ajax-ified" it. Three Ajax features are covered: viewing employees in a department, adding new employees, and searching for employees. While you may not have the need to perform these specific tasks, the underlying theories--returning a large data set via Ajax, POSTing new data, form validation, and searching--are applicable to almost every project. By using these examples, the book is able to hit all the key aspects of what it means to perform Ajax today.In terms of the code, the book begins by creating the non-Ajax version first, then adding an Ajax layer. There are two benefits to this approach. First, you can ensure that the non-Ajax version is working properly before getting into the more complicated version (Ajax is harder to debug). Second, the Ajax layer is applied so that it "degrades nicely", which is to say the example's core functionality will continue to work even if the user has JavaScript disabled.For the JavaScript, which is at the heart of Ajax, I explain how to hand write your own code, as opposed to using a framework. While I'm a pretty big fan of jQuery (as a JavaScript framework example), it's worth knowing how to do things the direct way. I have to agree somewhat with Charlie, who gave this book one star. While this is a good introduction to Ajax, parts of the code were missing in the Ajax versions, so after I typed in all the code in the Ajax-based chapters and tested them, they only brought up the non-Ajax versions. However, when I replaced the code I typed from the Ajax-based chapters with the downloadable code from the book's website, it worked. I compared that code with the Ajax examples in the book and sure enough, there were missing snippets of code. Of course, this book isn't the ultimate "bible" of Ajax and the author didn't mean it to be that way. It's just an introduction to Ajax with a real-world application for HR departments. This book was my introduction to Ajax, which I'll follow up with more in-depth books on the Ajax/PHP combination. I give this book 3 stars.

For the money this is a good purchase. One needs to have some experience with web design and a basic understanding of how html, javascript, php and MySql relate to each other, but where the author acknowledges he can't cover those subjects in depth he gives excellent references to other publications.He uses a unique format to show the concepts of building pages in two steps. 1) a straightforward html page without ajax and 2) adding ajax code in a way that the final version is still compatible with non ajax supported browsers. The printed code examples are supported by an on-line site where the code can be downloaded to avoid typing.He also includes a brief but excellent discussion on the differences in XML, JSON and Frameworks. And, since I am a Mac aficionado, it is refreshing to see screen shots that show he uses a Mac and makes no apologies for it.

I own this book, it is a good book on designing visual pleasing php based sites with easy updating of pages without needing to refresh the page for new content, updating databases etc.. BUT with the recent advances in jQuery and Twitter Bootstrap this book is rather outdated as AJAX by itself as a term you really don't need to code for anymore as others have done all that for you.I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money on this book, more than 10 dollars and it wouldn't be worth the price in my opinion. When it first came out, YES but now I don't think so. There are other books of Larry's that go into what this book does and so much more.

I must admit I was disappointed when I first opened this book. Large fonts, half-empty pages, I thought they just wanted to extend 20-30 page text to 140+ and make money.I was wrong, I mistakenly thought that this was going to be like PHP6 & MySql5 from the same author. That book is a heavy one with 600+ pages where author goes into every single detail.However, this book is 100% practical guide. It's like Larry is teaching you a lesson how to implement that darn Javascript/Ajax that you tried but couldn't and explains to you everything he does! Clean, simple and elegant.So for 13-14$ you can't ask for more and definitely is worth it!I like his attitude, his style and he REALLY *knows how*!

This will not be the last thing you want to read about Ajax, but it should be the first. Great introduction: clearly written, easy to follow sample code, and thankfully concise.The author has put up a supporting web site. There's a forum and the author responds to questions. He has also provided all the sample code on the site. You can also copy and paste the SQL statements to create the database, tables, and insert the sample data.

Generally I find the Visual QuickProduct series quite useful and well organized. They are for those who want to just scratch the surface though, so some more-in-depth material is useful if you want to get down to the nuts and bolts of an application. This particular Visual QuickProject has one slight flaw in that it presents each project step by step - usually each step occupies two or more pages - so you have flip back and forth to put the steps together to get the big picture. The projects are generically useful and cover many areas where AJAX is a useful tool.

Larry's books are very well written, explaining things, showing code etc. I learned lots from this book. I am one that likes to code along with the book and it was laid out very clearly. Not super used to Kindle sorts of publications yet and not real sure that Kindle layouts are purposefully thought through. The graphics were small and one had to tap then zoom in to bring in the picture so it could be seen better. There must be a better way. Overall the content was excellent however.

Very good resource, it is a very good book and I highly recommend it. It is designed for people who know web programming but are want to learn Ajax, and it has helped me.

This is the first Mars/Venus book in the author's series of books that I've read. I have heard several good things about the original book Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. Naturally, curiosity got the better of me, and I purchased a copy of this book.I liked how the author was able to coherently build a framework to explain the differences between men and women. His analogy to interplanetary species having to co-mingle here on earth struck me as original and humorous.There were, however, certain aspects of this book that are a bit disappointing to me. Whereas I agree with most of his points, I wish the author would have included more real world examples and scenarios. In 290 pages of text, only 3 examples were given as to how effective this framework could be.The book's recurring theme and lesson is that men and women basically misunderstand each other because they come from different planets where customs and traditions vary.The book is full of 2-3 column charts on what men and women should or shouldn't say at certain situations. It attempts to explain what is going on in the mind of a woman as a result of what a man does or says, and vice versa. It also offer remedial dialogue for what to say when a "misunderstanding" is about to occur.Another point the author drills into the readers mind is: Men are quick to arrive at solutions whenever a woman approaches him with a problem, not knowing that this is her way of including him in her world and a way of leading up to her solution. It states, half a dozen times throughout the book, that women share their emotions with men in the workplace not as a way of putting blame or soliciting advice, but rather a way to make an emotional connection. Men, on the other hand, view this as a sign of weakness and a waste of time. The author terms men as Mr. Fix It because men seem to always quickly offer a solution not fully hearing out what a woman has to say. Believe it or not, that was the single most important takeaway of the whole book. Each chapter repeats a variation of this lesson.Toward the end of the book, the author crams in a chapter about sexual harrassment. Why it occurs (based on his framework of interplanetary misunderstanding) and what can be done to relieve or tolerate it. I do think the topic of sexual harrassment in the workplace is relevant, but I felt it was glossed over.The second to the last chapter is devoted to essentially two checklists: 101 Ways Men can Empathize with Women and 101 Ways Women can Empathize with Men. And there really were 101 items on each list. This struck me as odd because it reminded me of a little book called Life's Little Instruction Book by H. Jackson Brown . It had suggestions like compliment her hairstyle, offer to bring her a glass of water, carry around a family photo in your wallet, etc. It just seemed really odd to me that this would be included in this book.(I'm curious as to whether this book stemmed from the author's workshop materials or the other way around. Maybe this book is the summary of his specialized courses to institutions.) Either way, I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book because what the author has spent almost 300 pages trying to explain, I can capture in 3 paragraphs.

The biggest thing missing from my MBA education was learning how to interact with other people. Business is nothing if we can't communicate effectively and regularly. This book explains in clear terms how men can understand women and communicate effectively. We men can't talk to women the way we do with other men. We are very different. By following Dr. Gray's guidelines, men can learn how to earn the trust and respect of female co-workers. We can learn easy ways to speak the woman's language and understand her perceptions. The most fascinating aspect is the description of women's emotions, what they mean, and positive responses men can use to increase productivity and create a pleasant workplace. Working in harmony is the only way to go.I should think that this book can be especially helpful to women, as they are basically working in a world that has been designed and run by men. As Dr. Gray says, a woman's challenge in the workplace is greater than a man's. While the books and research of Gail Evans and Dr. Deborah Tannen and others have described gender differences, this book by Dr. Gray sheds light on many aspects of workplace problems and offers solutions that are easy, respectful, effective, and even fun.

Dr Gray has done it again...another outstanding book.His insights have assisted me with my male(martians)client.My practice is now brimming with males....because I now understand not to give unsolicited advice...but rather ask better questions.The tools and skills should be taught in schools.I wish I had of know the differences when I first started out in the workplace.Bravo Dr Gray... It is truly amazing how little changes make such big differences.The quality of my relationships since using the mars venus principles has gone to levels I had never dreamed of! As a single parent with two boys,I am grateful for all the knowledge and practical advice....It is wonderful to have such a close connection with them. I would suggest everyone in the workplace read this.How wonderful to go back to basics,courtsey,shivilery.I could only image how much more pleasant,loving and caring the world would be if everyone adopted Grays work! Keep up the much needed work! God bless him for trying to open peoples eyes and hearts!!!!

Excellent! I have MANY books on MM, and this is the one you really need to have. Much more detail than his "Concise Intro" (which is exactly that), and much more useful than his "MM Reader" (really a collection of previously-published articles on issues in MM). A better (IMO) boots-on-the-ground, useful book than Teddlie & Tashakori's "Foundations" book (which offers a different perspective - useful for that purpose). If you're going to buy just one, this is the one.

What is mixed methods research? Authors Professor John Cresswell and Professor Vicki L. Plano Clark clearly outline the recent trend of combining the positives of both Qualitative research-popular in Australia, UK and Europe; with Quantitative research-popular in the USA and Canada. Both types of research have acknowledged strengths and weaknesses and the idea of combining the two types is to obtain superior data.In contrast to some references, the book is written in an easy style with sample activities at the end of each chapter, which are aimed particularly towards the newcomer to MM research to understand the techniques, together with a summary of the chapter's discussion and further reading suggestions.While comprehensive in covering MM research methodologies,the book also allows the reader to grasp the fundamentals and work through the various types of MM research techniques to determine the best method for the task at hand. Chapters cover the various MM research design, analysis of data, FAQs and what future direction MM will possibly take.The book is ideal for the newcomer to research methods as well as the seasoned veteran; particularly those researchers seeking fresh ideas in research projects.In summary, a very good reference book on the topic of MM; well laid out and easy to follow. A good reference for the beginner to research methods as well as the experienced researcher. Well done, Professors Creswell and Plano Clark !

This book is good for a broad overview of mixed methods research. It is not exactly helpful for writing my dissertation but would be good for somebody just being introduced to this type of research.

Creswell & Clark have written an outstanding text detailing the various controversies and options available for mixed methods in social and behavioral research. The research examples are excellent and work beautifully for class exercises/critiques. The details regarding various approaches to mixing QUAL/QUANT approaches are explained here better than in any other text I have read as a research professor. HIGHLY recommended for mixed methods projects and/or classes.

Great purchase

Great textbook for my PhD nursing course. It was extremely exhaustive. I recommend downloading the Kindle and using it in that format so that you can search it for information. Its much easier than flipping to the back and looking at the index section!

I am really happy I found this book. The authors avoid taking sides on epistemological battles in discussing the various ways that people use the term 'mixed methods'. The book takes you through planning, conducting, and writing up mixed methods research. It is valuable both as a book to skim through, and as a relatively detailed resource, although I will probably pair it with other books with more details on some specific qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques.

Love Creswell's texts for completeness. His explanations are very helpful and so easy to read, especially one newer to MM research. Also, his Quant & Qual book is great and I use it regularly! You will not go wrong in purchasing any of his books!

I am a huge fan of Peggy Dean's work, and this book is another fabulous resource! I do not have a formal art background, and I struggle to draw anything that resembles what it's supposed to be. I received my book yesterday and drew these beautiful flowers! Thank you, Peggy!

This is a wonderful book for any artist, designer, hand letterer looking for inspiration. The style is fun and modern, each drawing broken down into easy to follow steps. But also can easily be changed and combined to create something unique.PROS:The format is simple - 200 flowers, branches, leaves, succulents, cacti, mushrooms, acorns, etc. broken down step by step. If illustrating has ever seemed intimidating, this book makes it very easy to get started. There's a broad range of flora in the book, including potted cacti and a cute little mason jar terrarium.CONS:The only (small) con for me is, once again, the print quality. Sadly, I returned her lettering book because the quality was so poor there were nearly blank spots in the middle of a few pages. Happily, the quality on this book is MUCH better. But, the gray print still looks pixelated and the paper is still thin. I think this bothers me because it's such a lovely book and deserves to look it's best. Peggy Dean is super talented, and I hope she's able to find a publisher or a better printer for future books.Overall, super pleased I bought this book. :)

This is a nice drawing book with step by step instructions. I am enjoying the content of this book, however the quality of the printing and cheep paper used to make this book is very distracting. The paper is so thin, I can see through this the page to what is printed on the back side as well as what is on the next page. When "faded shadow lines are used for showing what to draw next, the "shadows" of the next page print are distracting. The print is also low quality (meaning, I can see the pixels of the print) when holding the book at normal reading distance from my eyes.

Whilst this book has had mixed review, I ended up buying it because the "look inside" showed promise - for needlework, stencils and linocut.It did lack in the demonstration of how to make a cohesive picture, but then this book really isn't about that, but I can see how people would like to know how to make a bunch from the flowers.I like this book and it certainly suits my needs in my fibre art, but maybe not so much if I wanted to learn to draw.

Everything I hoped this would be and more! I was a huge fan of the Brush Lettering book and the skill share courses but this book is perfection. 👏👏👏

I was really honored when my insta-buddy Peggy Dean of The Pigeon Letters asked me if I would review her new book that is set to release May 1st on Amazon. She sent me a copy of her new how-to book called "Botanical Line Drawing" which contains 200 step-by-step illustrations of flowers, leaves, cacti, succulents, and other items found in nature. This book was a pleasure to go thru. Especially as a botanical and floral artist.When I first received the book, I glanced thru it and noticed all the easy step-by-step illustrations. Dean used about 5 to 6 simple illustrations that would help anyone learn how to draw these nature elements. Then, I noticed how many different items she actually provided. Two hundred things to draw is amazing for anyone looking to learn to illustrate.Dean also broke down the nature elements into four categories for easy browsing. When I sat down to watercolor one of her step-by-step illustrations, I took a look at the contents and found one of my favorites sections – the "Cacti & Succulents". I skipped right to that section and browsed thru all the fun doodles and whimsical illustrations. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the cacti illustrations were all playfully potted. Her step-by-step was easy and fast. There is also a helpful area to practice your drawing, so you don't have to worry about extra drawing paper.If anyone is interested in learning how to draw botanicals, I recommend investing in this helpful book. Also, for anyone that is a bit more advanced, this book is very nice to have for inspiration and it's nice to keep in your library for reference. I will most definitely be looking through this book when I feel the need for a bit of botanical inspiration, feel like doodling along with Peggy, or let anyone draw thru it while it hangs out on our coffee table. Thank you, Peggy for such a fun book.

I like the layout of this book. I do a lot of drawing, but when it comes to doodling I can never think of anything interesting. This book is exactly what I was looking for. You'll learn step by step how to draw quick little doodles that actually look like something. These will be great for making borders or cute little drawings in the corner of a larger page. I think anyone, regardless of skill level can get something out of this book. Some of the drawings are a little more detailed and may take a little practice, but most of them are quite simple and it's easy to get good results. Remember one success leads to another and with this book, you'll have many.
