As an aviation and space buff, I haven't really read any of the astronaut biographies, which might be surprising. After a while, the Apollo program becomes something like the Beatles. You become obsessed with knowing everything but somehow there is nothing new and after a while the stories are known and no longer all that interesting.However, I saw an interview with Cernan on youtube, and the film this book was based on with the same title and wanted to read this account. What I always appreciated about Gene Cernan was he was the rare astronaut that had the vulnerability to gobeynd the technical. That is, in an interview he stated that he felt he needed to express what going to the moon's like - how it felt. Unfortunately for many of themes who journeyed to the moon, expressing oneself was a difficult thing.Cernan was a bit different and this book is the expression of that fact. The book is open, vulnerable and just a great read. Cernan really expressed what his life as an astronaut was like, how it felt , what it was like. In short, this is just a great read I blew through very rapidly. Cernan talks about himself and his family. Although he wasn't the only one to leave reminders as to his family, his references to his daughter really always said something to me and my life and family. Cernan seemed like a mensch for his actions and a genuine person able to more freely express himself about his travels than most of the other astronauts. Unfortunately, the technical brilliance and ability didn't translate to a ability and desire to convey that beauty to humanity as mush as could be hoped. I recall seeing an interview where Cernan felt it was his duty to talk. This book goes a long way towards conveying things that only a limited number of human beings have ever felt.If you have the slightest interest in Apollo I would recommend this book. Unfortunately Cernan passed away in early 2017, but this book is actually inspiring. It made me want to aspirate do better. These astronauts were not just strap it and go types, they were intimately involved in many technical details and were engineers and technically very very smart people. In reading this book I realized just how great so many of the Apollo people were with the three astronauts just being the tip of the spear so to speak.Fantastic read, informative and wished I had grabbed it years ago. My reading of Andrew Chaikin's book was not the quite the whole story as this book makes clear.Recommended.

You may think you've learned everything about the 12 men who walked on the moon, but Gene Cernan's perspective and insights are a great read. 50 years after the clean cut image days, we see the drive to excel. There are candid remarks about not all the astronauts being the best of pals, great anecdotes and, in spite of Cernan wishing he were a poet to better share his experiences with all those taxpayers and engineers and technicians who put him on the moon, he gets the point across that the experience was beyond comprehension and articulation. I've read much on lunar geology by Dr Rock of UW Madison (aka Harrison Schmidt), but these human glimpses were priceless. Cernan is strong and opinionated, but gracious in sharing his beliefs and thoughts with us earthbound folk. He makes me wish people still had the drive to explore and to push themselves beyond the mundane.

Great first hand account from a breed of astronaut who wasn't afraid to let an occasional cuss fly (for strategic effect--not for the sake of being profane) and tell it like it was/is. You'd think the book would center around the Apollo 17 mission and Gene's last footsteps on the moon (or at least I did), but it does not. That's certainly part of the book, but the majority of it is setting the scene and detailing the many events that set Gene's trajectory for commanding Apollo 17.All current and future astronauts should read this book as well as Mike Mullane's "Riding Rockets" book. If not for anything else, but to be unafraid to be human and give us commoners a true hero to look up to--not the watered down, politically correct, perfectly groomed specimens that they must be in today's astronaut corps.

I have an affinity for space documentaries, movies, art ( Alan Bean!!), and books. Gene Cernan is the last man to walk on the moon, and in his memoir, he talks about his humble beginnings, along with his exciting recollections of becoming a pilot, husband, father, and astronaut. His writing is easy to read, funny, and informative. His sense of humor is wonderful, and I couldn't get enough of his story. I will definitely be reading this book more than once. I encourage anyone, who has a love for NASA, space, space history, or the moon, to read this book. I also encourage those who share my fascination with anything space related, to watch "When We Left Earth" (by Discovery Channel) for an additional look at Gene Cernan. His interviews are funny, educational, and honest. (He also happens to be a pretty handsome guy.) Gene, if you are reading this, thank you so much for writing this book with (so much) detail. Unfortunately, I was born about a year after you took your last steps on the moon, but your book allowed me to feel as if I were sitting in my living room watching it happen (live) on television. I will make sure to pass this amazing history to my children, and assure they will never forget you, and all of the other extraordinary men, who made life in the world of space travel (NASA) look easy.

I read this book out loud to my family, which includes hubby, a teen boy, and a tween girl. We each giggled at least once, including my very serious husband. I knew it had the stamp of approval when we finished chapter 19 of 20 and there was a collective groan when I read the title of the 20th and last chapter, but put the book down for the next night. We read one chapter each evening, or about 15-20 minutes if there were no chapter delineations, as in some other books. That chapter 20 title indicated that the end was coming for Mr. Popper's Penguins.Last night we read the last chapter. Sigh. I wasn't ready for it to be over. If you read the Kindle copy of the book, be sure to read the end-of-book matter. There are pictures of the Atwater family, and an explanation of how this book came to be. I'm SO glad Mrs. Atwater made some realistic changes to the book before it was published after Mr. Atwater's death. What she did turned it into the award-winning classic that it is, a must-read for all ages.This book was an assigned read-aloud for our homeschool curriculum, but we set it aside in a big stack of books to be read later, since it was just for enjoyment and not really related to other readings and assignments in the curriculum at the time. I'm so glad we waited, because now it would be remembered forever. It was very different from the Jim Carrey movie (also fabulous), so read this and enjoy a completely different story. Pretty much the only things relating the book and movie were the character names and the plethora of penguins!Enjoy some time with your family and read aloud!

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a perennial favorite summer reading book for the fourth grade or so. I bought the book to see if it was appropriate for teaching English to middle school Ukrainians. I also read it to my 7-year-old son.I decided the book was too long for my seventh graders, and the story perhaps a bit too juvenile. The language level, third and fourth grade, was exactly what I had been looking for. It seems totally appropriate for summer reading.The book was written in the 1930s and reflects traditional values. A married couple, children who respect their father despite his foibles, and the typical small town characters from taxi drivers to the dowager on the street. The authority figures, Adm. Drake and Mr. Greenbaum, are also stock characters. The book would be written differently today.The penguins themselves are rather improbable in their sociability, intelligence, and amazing ability to jump. Fiction involves the willing suspense of disbelief. This book asks a bit more than usual. However, as noted, my 7-year-old son had no trouble whatsoever putting aside his disbelief and getting engrossed in the story. He insisted that we read it every night. It took 5 nights to complete.As a children's story it has stood the test of time.

I had never read this silly little book until it was on sale for Kindle and I decided to read it at bedtime with my eight-year-old son. We found its whimsical and bizarre story charming and had a great time with it. While the book's central plot ends in an abrupt deus-ex-machina and I was hoping for a bit more of a pleasant epilogue, we enjoyed our time with it. Looking forward to watching the movie with him (which I actually heard wasn't so great). Still, the turn-of-the-century explorer trope is used wildly in this book, but the fun part is that it is a book that never takes itself seriously, so it is the perfect short-chaptered before bedtime book that is a lot of fun to read as we got snoozy. Captivating illustrations throughout.

My Four-Year-Old is just beginning to be interested in having chapter books read to her. But as she gets stressed out by conflict of any sort, it's kind of tough finding good candidates for her. This is a winner.For those of you who haven't read the book, the basic premise is that a house painter who spends his off-hours reading about (and writing to) explorers in the South Pole receives a penguin in the mail from one of those explorers. Since his work is over for the winter, he becomes very involved in the comfort and care of said penguin (and the eleven other penguins that quickly follow). In the end, he transforms his basement into an ice rink (an idea my daughter wholeheartedly supports, by the way), and spends more than his wife ever thought possible on fish and canned shrimp.I won't tell you how an out-of-work house painter manages to pay for all that (wouldn't want to spoil the ending), but I will say that the process is highly entertaining for all involved. I found myself looking forward to each night's installment of Mr. Popper nearly as much as The Four-Year-Old.Although I personally found the ending to be highly improbable, The Four-Year-Old saw nothing at all the matter with it--except for that little bit of unpleasantness with the policemen and firemen--and has spent many a happy evening reenacting the finale in the bathtub.And now, if you will excuse me, I need to go read Mr. Popper's Penguins to The Four-Year-Old again. If you buy the best card of the best player in the best condition, regardless of the market price today, you will be able to sell it at a higher price later because there is always someone out there (the bigger fool) who wants it more than you do. There is always a market for the very best. So the most important thing is to know which cards are the best and target those. After establishing that premise, the book goes into great detail about many individual players and their key cards. Most of the key cards from the modern sets are either Bowman Chrome to Topps Chrome cards. The book gives describes the different cards in those sets (chrome, refractors, superfractors, autos, etc.) to show the difference in pricing power based on the quality and quantity available of those cards.The later chapters of the book discuss different methods of acquiring cards for investment, such as case breaks, which seem to be the most popular method right now. Hwang advises against buying individual packs, and, most of the time, boxes, from large retail stores where packs can be purchased, searched, and returned to be resold. It is disheartening to me, as a collector, to read this part of the book because he does go into some detail about how investors are basically making it nearly impossible for collectors to find the best cards. Just never really got into it. The villains felt too far off-screen, there was none of the Dallas Peabody repartee that I enjoy and not much Dallas-Roarke interplay either. The story felt somewhat perfunctory, and there was little satisfaction in the villains being caught—perhaps because their motivation felt so unreal. I was hoping we’d get more of the Econo CEO, Willemina (?) or the children of the Quantum CEO, as they seemed the most real of the secondary characters, but they disappeared from the story after a the first few chapters.My other least favorite book in the series also had close friends as the murderers, so maybe it works less well to have Dallas squaring off against a team... Or maybe in order to work, a team of villains would have to have just as deeply emotional a bond as Dallas has with Peabody or Roarke...Perhaps the biggest problem, however, was the sheer number of victims. The strong suit of these books is Dallas’s ability to get into people’s heads and hearts, and with so many dead, there was no central person for Dallas to engage with. The dead just became a string of names and a few interchanges between Dallas/Peabody and the families, and that wasn’t enough to provide the book with a heart. The Oscars coverage at the end might have been intended to ground the story in Dallas’s relationships with the people who love/are loved by her, but it simply felt disjointed, a reminder for me more of what was missing in this book than anything else. Hope the next one is better!

I have read (and, in some cases re-read) all of the "In Death" books. It is a great series, and watching the growth and evolution of the characters and relationships with fantastic story lines is a true pleasure.But not this time.To me this book lacked the coherence and tight plotting that nearly all of the other 46 books in this series have had. Too many characters, not a clear reason for the murders (too many reasons, perhaps) Where tension was building in the plot line, it suddenly just melted away a couple of times. The high drama, the "ah ha" moment just weren't there for me. It felt as though a lot of leftover plot lines or scenes not used in other books were just added into this one to come up with the right number of pages.I'm disappointed because I have been waiting for months for this book. But, there will be another in the spring of 2019, and I am already looking forward to that one!!!

I have read and enjoyed 45 great books about Roarke and Dallas,all rest of the people that jumped of the pages full of substance, personally and life.Dallas and Roarke does not degrade themselves with Foul and obscene language. When did Roarke bang Dallas not make love to her?In books 46, 47 the characters do not jump off pages. They just lay with out a small wiggle. Flat and boringPlease do not do this to all of these great characters you have created.I cannot recommend this book.

I'm not sure I understand how so many reviewers call this "...In Death" a "Home Run". JD Robb is getting a bit more back in the groove after a very spotty record recently (Secrets In Death was simply flat-out dreadful, badly written, badly plotted, and needed major editing). For me, the touchstone of a GREAT ...In Death story are books like New York To Dallas In Death and Origin In Death and Treachery in Death, where Robb's plotting is superb and she really stretches her characters.But other than the scene where Peabody is hopped up on an upper (dept approved) and espresso, I liked how she now is actually seeing her way through to teasing out potential evidence and motive, albeit guided by Eve.There was, to some extent, a formulaic quality to the story, and, as pointed out, interesting characters, like Willi, aren't developed when they could be. Still, I'm hoping Nora Roberts really gets a spark again to bring up a really compelling back-story that she's lost. Despite all that, it was a page-turner and was an OK read. If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would, but 5 stars? Sorry, no way!

This is another great addition to the In Death series, my favorite of the last couple of releases. The premise is different and intriguing. The first murders have to do with the ins and outs of the stock market, buying on margin and leverage (hence the title) and that section got a bit dense for someone who is really out of their element with that topic but it doesn’t last long. The idea of someone being coerced into committing a crime by wearing a bomber vest has been used numerous times before but the intrigue here is the how and why. As usual, Robb does a great job with character development and building the story arc.We don’t get the multiple possible guilty parties and red herrings that are often typical of this series, just a slow build to the revelation of The Who and the why.We get a very tense scene between Eve and Roarke harkening back to their differences and the idea of trust, we of course get Eve’s background and her nightmares bringing on an interesting discussion between Eve and Roarke about if they were ever in a situation like this what they’d do.Lightness in the story revolves around it being Oscar time and the Icove movie being nominated for several awards, including Nadine for Best Adapted Screenplay. Mavis also performs at the Oscar ceremony. Of course Eve thinks the whole thing is a pain in the butt which will just make things more annoying for her!Great book, great storytelling, familiar characters who have become like friends. Loved how much Baxter and Trueheart we got in this book. But at the heart of it all, as always is Eve and Rourke and that is demonstrated in several ways in this book.

I have read every Eve Dallas book and look forward to every release of the next one. This time, what a huge disappointment.I could not get into the book. It was slow to take off. It was boring. Overloaded with unnecessary profanity. I didn't finish the book. A first ever! It was a great run ...while it lasted. So sad

Systemantics was probably my favorite technical read of the year for my software development career. Like The Design of Everyday Things, this book is not about software development, at least not directly. This book addresses all the things that are arguably true about systems. The book refers to large systems like government and public school systems, and medium systems like city garbage collection, and even smaller systems like families, or a system for managing a small group of employees. These systems are all set up to solve or at least manage a problem the same way we develop software systems to do the same.The author refers back and forth to these common systems as it explains over 20 truisms of systems, especially large ones. Some of my favorites include: - First rule of systems design: do without out one if possible - New systems mean new problems - A large system produced by expanding a smaller system will not behave like the smaller system - Things are as they appear to be, not what they areThe book is written in a very lighthearted yet serious way which makes it easy to read, even funny. Everywhere, things are not working well and those outside of the systems that are failing are sure they could fix them if only their ideas were universally adopted. However, this book admittedly offers no solution. There is no single method to follow and all axioms are too fundamental for direct application. Rather the axioms provide clues and guidance to awareness of what makes a particular system faulty. The Systematics student, understanding the risk of failure, even catastrophic failure, knows that the undertaking should only be begun where the present evil is very clear and the consequences of utter failure are no more unbearable than the original unsatisfactory situation.

I purchased this book because I have a child with severe anxiety. The first chapter was great! The second chapter spoke about a drug causing serious weight gain, 80 lbs! I can let my daughter read this because she has a history of an eating disorder. Not helpful!!!!

This is an important book. Everyone should read it.

I like her comparison of anxiety being a stupid monster that doesn’t know anything. Robison Wells discusses mental illness treatments and the mental illnesses he lives with. Lauren Oliver relates her depression to mental stutters; we may all trip up at one time or another. Jennifer L. Armentrout talks about her suicide attempt and suicidal thoughts. Amy Reed shares her experiences with addiction and depression. Aprilynne Pike explains her compulsive behavior. Rachel M. Wilson’s dilemma of OCD and ADHD combined is shared. Dan Wells remembers his grandparents and the dementia and Alzheimer’s they dealt with. Amber Benson shares the gift of therapy and how she believes there’s no difference between having mental health problems or physical health problems; they both need help. E. K. Oh boy. This was a great book to read and to start conversations, but it was also hard to read because of the subject matter. I love that so many authors shared their stories and I hope that this book spurs conversations among teens. I hope they see they are not alone. I hope they find themselves sharing their own stories. There isn't any judgement here, it's all very matter of fact. I love that so many of the essays talked about what worked for them and how it won't work for everyone. I love how they advice readers to get help and figure out the method that might work best for them. This book is so powerful - from the number of authors sharing their stories to the range of mental illnesses shared. It's an eye opening read.

I love this book. I enjoyed all the different stories and how each one was different. The struggles that people go through are as different as, how different we look to each other. One person tall while the other person is short. One person's struggles are different for the person next to you.I found some of the stories I like more than the others, some I related to better than others but each story is important. Even though this book does cover many, many much need topics it still made me giggle with funny, witty lines. Cleave writers with power stories.I checked this out from my library.

A powerful collection of essay about mental illness from the perspective of people who have personally experienced or have a loved on who has experienced mental illness. Standout essays included those written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Melissa Marr, Maureen Johnson, and Cindy L. Rodriguez.I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I can't say how much I am thankful for this book! It's great seeing these lovely popular authors share personal stories that can help inspire this generation and hopefully break the stigma on mental illness. As someone who also suffers from mental illness, this was an inspiring!
