"This book seems destined to become a eulogy for the important contributions that Martin Levine made to the sociological study of sexuality, gender, and AIDS.” -Men and Masculinities

From the Back Cover

Before gay liberation, gay men were usually perceived as failed men - "inverts", men trapped in women's bodies. The 1970s saw a radical shift in gay male culture, as a male homosexuality emerged that embraced a more traditional masculine ethos. The gay "clone", a muscle-bound, sexually free, hard-living Marlboro man, appeared in the gay enclaves of major cities, changing forever the face of gay male culture. Gay Macho presents the ethnography of this homosexual clone. Martin P. Levine, a pioneer of the sociological study of homosexuality, was among the first social scientists to map the emergence of a gay community and this new style of gay masculinity. Levine was a participant in as well as an observer of gay culture in the 1970s, and this perspective allowed him to capture the true flavor of what it was like to be a gay man before AIDS. Later chapters, based on Levine's pathbreaking empirical research, explore some of the epidemiological and social consequences of the AIDS epidemic on this particular substratum of the gay community. Although Levine explicitly rejects pathologizing the gay men afflicted with HIV, his work develops a scathing, feminist-inspired critique of masculinity, whether practiced by gay men or straight men.

I just dropped a lot of money for many Quickstudy Guides, so that I could learn all the body systems in great detail.Unfortunately, without realizing, I clicked from page to page as the options were being shown thinking I was buying all the big cards that are greatly detailed.I was disappointed to find that because there is no paper size posted in the details section. I bought some big cards 8.5"x11" and some were this size 4"x6" this truly does make a big difference because it DOES NOT INCLUDE: Ileocecalsphincter and Appendix, Rectum, Mouth and Salivary Glands, nor Permanent Teeth. So, it it inconclusive and will not give you the detail you want but it is small (but to big for your pocket). What you want is ISBN: 1572225254Considering that they have been publishing the other one since 2001, you would think that they would at least let you know that they are not giving you a comprehensive guide.

During now a couple of years I have been buying many of these Quick Study side cards, normally in the connection to the actual health and doctor books which I reading, but all of the previous of these have been having the height of the 11.5 inch, and sold with the holes for fitting into a 3 ring rinds. So this time when I ordered the Quick Study Digestive System, in the connection to a book a about Rectum Cancer, I automatically, as always, thought that it would be having the same size, as all the other, and as earlier did not read about its dimension, so I got highly surprised when receiving it.As for all of the other Quick Study the drawings are really good, and besides it’s very practically with sides covered by plastic. But it too small, so it’s only a question of time before it will disappear.

Like other reviewers, I didn't realize that this was an index card sized guide. In the heading, it is called a "pamphlet" just like the larger guides are. I bought almost all the guides I could find, for my own reference as well as for my child to supplement my child's education. I am not in the medical field, so the amount of info on the card is more than sufficient for my uses. I just would have liked it to be full sized so I can put them all together in folder.

This is a great reference material to quickly catch up on some info. It helped me pass my TEAS and get in to a Nursing program.

excellent quick reference guide for reviewing before exams.

I work in Orthotics, which has more to do with bones than skin and, but it can be useful to be familiar with other organs involved in manipulating human bodies. Considering the work I do can affect the patients' entire life, I try to perceive as much as possible. These charts are very helpful.

Very vivid colors and great listings

I've read a lot of books on writing, publishing, and other related topics. It's been a while since I've come across any completely new information, but this book mentioned something called BookSurge which I will have to research further. In addition to that it is the best and most detailed look at CreateSpace I have come across so far. There is information that contradicts what I've read elsewhere and the information from other sources made more sense, but not so much as to keep this book from being one I intend to keep for reference. I would recommend this book for people looking to use CreateSpace to publish their book in paperback form.

If you ask the author he will probably give you an humble opinion about his own book. At least that is how it seems in his introduction. However, I was surprised to find more informations than I could expect from a less than $10, self-published book about self-publishing. Especially for me it was a balanced between general and technical. So this was an welcomed buffer in between yet truly helpful in many ways.Just for me here are ten things that I learned from this book apart from what I learned from other books I read on self-publishing:1. plagiarism- amazingly many books discuss on plagiarism from their perception without mere factors but this one does.2. when to format my manuscript was true time-saver for me.3. how ms-word can do a magic for you- even design the cover?!!!4. getting feedback on the book in several stages is a zero money marketing tactic.5. how amazon search engine works- insightful6. why I must have my own website regarding author's bio7. importance of the cover page, but critical of not to spend money on it8. what is Pro-subscription- which was valuable information yet honestly I still cannot really understand this yet. does author's new book explain this?9. change price in Amazon- how it affect sales10. more on amazon rules- all interesting. It is only 120 pages and can be read in one sitting in few hours, and at the end you know you are keeping for the book for future reference. Recommendation as supplementing with other great works like this.

I purchased both of McMullen's "Self-Publishing" guides. This one was the more current one. 5" x 8 1/2" format. The other one 7 1/2" x 10" format was the prior version. They over lapped. The larger format was published in 2 Volumes, most of which was covered in the smaller format. I received Vol 1. Confusing. Very good info, but I thought I was buying two separate books? You need to revise your advertising description. Very good info in both additions.

I am in the process of producing my fifth book. Three of the prior books were with publishers. I did the other one successfully totally on my own. This time I want to get the book on Amazon as a paperback and on Kindle as an eBook. I knew it would take far too much time to learn how to do that on my own so I bought this book by Chris McMullen. It helped confirm my decision to self-publish again. It also contains a wealth of information about how to do this. I quickly realized the book contains sufficient information to do it all on my own; however, I knew I don't have the time or the patience to do that. Therefore, I decided to use information from the book plus some very useful information from Chris to seek a firm that will pick this project up post editing and make it happen. Thanks much Chris for your help. Ted Benna "Father of 401k".

I have read the book from front to back and so far have my draft first 10 pages working well. I am dyslectic and that make every thing I write a challenge.I was particularly interested in using Micro-soft word because I all ready use that program because of it's spelling and gramma check's .This book explains all of the "how to" situations that present in writing a BOOK .I am 79 year of age and this is my first attempt at writing a book something My School teacher thought I would never ever be able to do, Even my children thought it would be the LAST thing I could do. When at school there were two students that were for ever being hauled out as writing the worst essays , yes one was me. So with a smile on my face this book gives me that ability to become an achieverCheers Ross Davis

When I began thinking about self-publishing a year or so ago, I bought several books on the topic. While I found others useful, this is the book I return to again and again. Every time I read it, I find new things to think about and try. In fact, the more familiar I become with the self-publishing field, the more useful I find McMullen's book. It is especially encouraging for new authors. It explains the need for patience whether watching your ranking or building a following. If you are just starting out, I encourage you to start with this book.

I found the book useful but needed to make some trails, failed attempts, in CreateSpace before I could quite grasp some of the instructions. I would like to see it organized on a recipe format; A then B then C. While variation is possible and useful maybe add as footnotes. But maybe younger more computer savvy readers may not find it so hard to follow.

I have just recently published with Amazon and purchased this title to make sure that I "covered all the bases". Love the fact that I now have a published novel. And I have a guide to follow for marketing strategies and future writings. This is a detailed and helpful resource. Easy to understand.

Bad Advice: Or Why Celebrities, Politicians, and Activists Aren't Your Best Source of Health Information

Review

In breezy and deceptively conversational prose that often winks with humor, “Bad Advice” breaks down complex scientific subjects that have been distorted through several cultural lenses. Offit takes to task actors, network news anchors, quack scientists and even politicians who, unlike Jolie in her thoughtful article, have opined on scientific subjects in ways that misinform the public, on occasion to a potentially dangerous degree. (Washington Post)Bad advice about your health, firmly grounded in fact-free marketing, greed, and science denialism, is omnipresent in the new and old media these days. One of the few reliable sources of good advice is Dr. Paul A. Offit who, unlike all too many scientists and doctors, is ready to take on the hype and lies of celebrities, charlatans, ideologues, and money-grubbers with logic, evidence, and humor. Take my advice: Bad Advice is just what you need to navigate the murky waters of an unending stream of really bad information about your health. (Arthur L. Caplan, Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor of Bioethics, New York University School of Medicine)Bad Advice gives us a front row seat to Offit’s role on the leading edge of the vaccine fight as he shows just how important communicating good science can be. The author's rare storytelling blend of equal parts humorous anecdotes and serious facts leads to an entertaining and captivating read that is hard to put down. (Melissa Stockwell, MD, MPH, Columbia University Medical Center)Paul Offit is a pediatrician, a vaccine scientist, and one of our foremost explainers of science. In Bad Advice, he distills what he has learned―often the hard way―from standing up for science in the face of bogus theories, quack remedies, and the flat-out denial of empirical fact. Skillfully, Offit uses stories of his many missteps in the treacherous public arena to teach us how to confront pseudoscience effectively. In the process, without noticing, we learn fascinating lessons in the relevant science. A forcefully-written, indispensable book, particularly at the present moment. (Geoffrey Kabat, cancer epidemiologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and author of Getting Risk Right: Understanding the Science of Elusive Health Risks)With humor and a unique perspective, Offit takes us step by step through our culture’s missteps (and some of his own), relating stories of real science and the difficulties of communicating complicated concepts clearly to a skeptical and sometimes hostile public. Bad Advice shows us how we can succeed in the battle against pseudoscience, seductive gurus with simple messages, and snake oil-hawking celebrities. (Adam Ratner, M.D., New York University)The beauty of mass communication in our free society is also our curse. Information flows so quickly, from so many different sources, that one can’t help but be overwhelmed―and too frequently misled. No one has fought harder over the years to educate the public, and to puncture the dangerously falsedogmas of pseudoscience, than Paul Offit. “Bad Advice” is a brilliant extension of his dictate, so aptlystated by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, that one is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.Celebrities and politicians bear the brunt of Offit’s elegantly written, often hilarious, pinpoint assaults. But what makes this book truly special is its vision of how science can, and must, be defended against itsdespoilers. “Bad Advice” is, in every sense, an essential read. (David Oshinsky, Director of the Division of Medical Humanities at NYU School of Medicine)

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in communicating about factual matters -- science communication, social issues, and politics. Offit shares his hard-learned lessons in how to communicate effectively in an environment more interested in clicks and inspirational stories. The third chapter covers the very human biases we all have, that affect our ability to think carefully about the world around us. It also covers how the media have let all of us down, by giving a platform to "false experts" -- in the name of fairness or balance. The rest of the book uses the anti-vaccine movement's successes and failures as a teaching tool. The book ends on a note of optimism, citing the newly vocal support for science in the media.

I've just begun to read Dr Offit's book, and I will be lending it out as soon as I'm finished. Dr Offit does an excellent job of explaining how the insidious anti-vaccine movement has grown in the past 20 years. The US and other first world countries are facing an inevitable public health crisis unless we can get a handle on the egregious misinformation circulated via the internet. This book should be a must for every scientifically minded person to read, then share with those who have been duped by the non-scientific movement.

This book is best for readers already familiar with the author and his place in our intellectual and moral discourse. If you don't know who Paul Offit is, you may find this book a bit rambling and perhaps whiney. If you do, you will be delighted by his personal disclosures. Paul Offit is a genuine hero, and to see that his compassion and humor has not been diminished in the least by our ignorance and intolerance is inspiring. And he's a hell of an entertaining writer.

With time on my hands to read I looked forward to "Bad Advise" as a possible update on the previous book "False Profits" I read years ago. As a retired pediatrician I still like to keep up with the ongoing battle between science/common sense and the forces I think confuse and misinform the public. This was a timely update. I got lost briefly in some of the stories but they eventually made sense as a vehicle for understanding the timeline.

I enjoyed how the author focuses on how scientists and those who support the sciences may not always have the best communication with their detractors. But by steadfastly sticking to the evidence and keeping integrity, can feel proud of their accomplishments and defend their knowledge.

The subtitle of this book is “Why celebrities, politicians, and activists aren’t your best source of health information.” I was expecting the book to address this question, but it did so unevenly. Author Paul Offit is a medical doctor whose background is research. He provides valuable educational material. But, he also gives the impression of a dedicated professional who was affected by his tangles with anti-vaccine activists, and who used this book to rectify himself. So, although many health issues need attention, Offit zeroes in on his area of expertise: vaccines, with emphasis on the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Other topics such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), gluten intolerance, and overdosing with dietary supplements are dealt with less thoroughly. Worse, Offit veers into descriptions of his personal confrontations with anti-vaccine forces. He elaborates on the frustration of trying to work through the media. For me, this peripheral attention diminishes Offit’s presentation of health issues. The book’s balance seems inconsistent. For example, he expounds on his testimony before a congressional hearing on vaccines and autism. And, he devotes a full chapter to the career of Andrew Wakefield, a discredited activist. I relished the educational parts of the book, while skipping sections featuring personalities.Yet, Offit understands science, and he enlightens readers with a basic explanation of the scientific method and statistical concepts. For example, I appreciated being reminded about statistical probabilities, and how scientists can “never prove never.” I liked Offit’s comparison of two movies that contrasted the handling of uncontrollable epidemics. He explained how one film reflected a realistic approach, while the other was “Hollywood.”Offit’s book is valuable in explaining how extreme “true believers” can be; and how their decisions’ outcomes, such as with vaccine avoidance, can be harmful. He illustrates that popularity is not a substitute for knowledge. And, he makes the point that misguided individuals, opportunists, hucksters, and frauds roam the scene. But, a single glimpse at late night TV could confirm that. I was looking to learn.

I'm a nurse and I learned valuable things about communicating in a voice of reason way combined with compassion. This book is insightful, timely, funny, and one of the best books I've read so far this year.

Dr. Offit is a highly regarded doctor and scientist. He writes in an easy manner and is not pretentious at all.He does a great job in presenting the facts as we know them (and he even presents mistakes that science has made over the years in his previous book, Pandora’s Lab, Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong).I would strongly disagree with anyone who says he writes purely for profit or that he is biased in any way. His previous books prove that he is fair and extremely knowledgeable. This book is a wonderful addition for anyone’s reading list.

This book being a compilation of competition entries, is very interesting and has a number of innovative designs for high rise buildings. However, the book itself was a bit of a disappointment for me. Seeing the competition web site before i purchased this book, i thought i was gonna end up with a huge book with 2-300 pages with high quality images of the competition material. But what i got in the end is a small book, having little more than what the web site already showed. Very little info, or description of the entries and relatively small diagrams that are in some cases hard to read.Saying all this, i would have bought it anyway, if i knew all that. I'm very interested in the competition and in the ideas displayed in the book...

This is one of the best books about contemporary and innovative architecture I have seen this year. It is full of great projects that deal with the skyscraper as both a problem and a solution to different cities around the globe. It is not just about super-tall buildings but about new technologies and its application in the design and construction of the skyscraper for the future generations. Many of the projects are really amazing both in a formal and a programmatic way. I really recommend this book to anyone who is interested in tall buildings, computer-aided design, and high-end design. I am really enjoying it!!

“This is an exciting, insider's take on what it was like to become one of the first humans in space.” ―Publishers Weekly“Eugene Cernan offers unique insight...[he's] experienced it all” ―African Sun Times“A fascinating book...Cernan pulls few punches.” ―Charlotte Observer“Refreshingly told...written as though it's been days since he went to space, not decades.” ―St. Petersburg Times“[with] thrilling highlights, this is a book not just about space flight but also about the often brutal competition that went on between the US and the Soviet Union.” ―Washington Times“With the feel of a story recalled among friends, this is an appealingly down to earth account from the last man to walk on the moon. No advanced physics, no scientific mumbo-jumbo. Just a thoroughly engrossing recollection of Cernan's crucial role in the conquest of space. As an aviation and space buff, I haven't really read any of the astronaut biographies, which might be surprising. After a while, the Apollo program becomes something like the Beatles. You become obsessed with knowing everything but somehow there is nothing new and after a while the stories are known and no longer all that interesting. However, I saw an interview with Cernan on youtube, and the film this book was based on with the same title and wanted to read this account. What I always appreciated about Gene Cernan was he was the rare astronaut that had the vulnerability to gobeynd the technical. That is, in an interview he stated that he felt he needed to express what going to the moon's like - how it felt. Unfortunately for many of themes who journeyed to the moon, expressing oneself was a difficult thing.Cernan was a bit different and this book is the expression of that fact. The book is open, vulnerable and just a great read. Cernan really expressed what his life as an astronaut was like, how it felt , what it was like. In short, this is just a great read I blew through very rapidly. Cernan talks about himself and his family. Although he wasn't the only one to leave reminders as to his family, his references to his daughter really always said something to me and my life and family. Cernan seemed like a mensch for his actions and a genuine person able to more freely express himself about his travels than most of the other astronauts. Unfortunately, the technical brilliance and ability didn't translate to a ability and desire to convey that beauty to humanity as mush as could be hoped. I recall seeing an interview where Cernan felt it was his duty to talk. This book goes a long way towards conveying things that only a limited number of human beings have ever felt.If you have the slightest interest in Apollo I would recommend this book. Unfortunately Cernan passed away in early 2017, but this book is actually inspiring. It made me want to aspirate do better. These astronauts were not just strap it and go types, they were intimately involved in many technical details and were engineers and technically very very smart people. In reading this book I realized just how great so many of the Apollo people were with the three astronauts just being the tip of the spear so to speak.Fantastic read, informative and wished I had grabbed it years ago. My reading of Andrew Chaikin's book was not the quite the whole story as this book makes clear.Recommended.

You may think you've learned everything about the 12 men who walked on the moon, but Gene Cernan's perspective and insights are a great read. 50 years after the clean cut image days, we see the drive to excel. There are candid remarks about not all the astronauts being the best of pals, great anecdotes and, in spite of Cernan wishing he were a poet to better share his experiences with all those taxpayers and engineers and technicians who put him on the moon, he gets the point across that the experience was beyond comprehension and articulation. I've read much on lunar geology by Dr Rock of UW Madison (aka Harrison Schmidt), but these human glimpses were priceless. Cernan is strong and opinionated, but gracious in sharing his beliefs and thoughts with us earthbound folk. He makes me wish people still had the drive to explore and to push themselves beyond the mundane.

Great first hand account from a breed of astronaut who wasn't afraid to let an occasional cuss fly (for strategic effect--not for the sake of being profane) and tell it like it was/is. You'd think the book would center around the Apollo 17 mission and Gene's last footsteps on the moon (or at least I did), but it does not. That's certainly part of the book, but the majority of it is setting the scene and detailing the many events that set Gene's trajectory for commanding Apollo 17.All current and future astronauts should read this book as well as Mike Mullane's "Riding Rockets" book. If not for anything else, but to be unafraid to be human and give us commoners a true hero to look up to--not the watered down, politically correct, perfectly groomed specimens that they must be in today's astronaut corps.

I have an affinity for space documentaries, movies, art ( Alan Bean!!), and books. Gene Cernan is the last man to walk on the moon, and in his memoir, he talks about his humble beginnings, along with his exciting recollections of becoming a pilot, husband, father, and astronaut. His writing is easy to read, funny, and informative. His sense of humor is wonderful, and I couldn't get enough of his story. I will definitely be reading this book more than once. I encourage anyone, who has a love for NASA, space, space history, or the moon, to read this book. I also encourage those who share my fascination with anything space related, to watch "When We Left Earth" (by Discovery Channel) for an additional look at Gene Cernan. His interviews are funny, educational, and honest. (He also happens to be a pretty handsome guy.) Gene, if you are reading this, thank you so much for writing this book with (so much) detail. Unfortunately, I was born about a year after you took your last steps on the moon, but your book allowed me to feel as if I were sitting in my living room watching it happen (live) on television. I will make sure to pass this amazing history to my children, and assure they will never forget you, and all of the other extraordinary men, who made life in the world of space travel (NASA) look easy.

I read this book out loud to my family, which includes hubby, a teen boy, and a tween girl. We each giggled at least once, including my very serious husband. I knew it had the stamp of approval when we finished chapter 19 of 20 and there was a collective groan when I read the title of the 20th and last chapter, but put the book down for the next night. We read one chapter each evening, or about 15-20 minutes if there were no chapter delineations, as in some other books. That chapter 20 title indicated that the end was coming for Mr. Popper's Penguins.Last night we read the last chapter. Sigh. I wasn't ready for it to be over. If you read the Kindle copy of the book, be sure to read the end-of-book matter. There are pictures of the Atwater family, and an explanation of how this book came to be. I'm SO glad Mrs. Atwater made some realistic changes to the book before it was published after Mr. Atwater's death. What she did turned it into the award-winning classic that it is, a must-read for all ages. This book was an assigned read-aloud for our homeschool curriculum, but we set it aside in a big stack of books to be read later, since it was just for enjoyment and not really related to other readings and assignments in the curriculum at the time. I'm so glad we waited, because now it would be remembered forever. It was very different from the Jim Carrey movie (also fabulous), so read this and enjoy a completely different story. Pretty much the only things relating the book and movie were the character names and the plethora of penguins!Enjoy some time with your family and read aloud!

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a perennial favorite summer reading book for the fourth grade or so. I bought the book to see if it was appropriate for teaching English to middle school Ukrainians. I also read it to my 7-year-old son.I decided the book was too long for my seventh graders, and the story perhaps a bit too juvenile. The language level, third and fourth grade, was exactly what I had been looking for. It seems totally appropriate for summer reading. The book was written in the 1930s and reflects traditional values. A married couple, children who respect their father despite his foibles, and the typical small town characters from taxi drivers to the dowager on the street. The authority figures, Adm. Drake and Mr. Greenbaum, are also stock characters. The book would be written differently today. The penguins themselves are rather improbable in their sociability, intelligence, and amazing ability to jump. Fiction involves the willing suspense of disbelief. This book asks a bit more than usual. However, as noted, my 7-year-old son had no trouble whatsoever putting aside his disbelief and getting engrossed in the story. He insisted that we read it every night. It took 5 nights to complete. As a children's story it has stood the test of time.

I had never read this silly little book until it was on sale for Kindle and I decided to read it at bedtime with my eight-year-old son. We found its whimsical and bizarre story charming and had a great time with it. While the book's central plot ends in an abrupt deus-ex-machina and I was hoping for a bit more of a pleasant epilogue, we enjoyed our time with it. Looking forward to watching the movie with him (which I actually heard wasn't so great). Still, the turn-of-the-century explorer trope is used wildly in this book, but the fun part is that it is a book that never takes itself seriously, so it is the perfect short-chaptered before bedtime book that is a lot of fun to read as we got snoozy. Captivating illustrations throughout.

My Four-Year-Old is just beginning to be interested in having chapter books read to her. But as she gets stressed out by conflict of any sort, it's kind of tough finding good candidates for her. This is a winner. For those of you who haven't read the book, the basic premise is that a house painter who spends his off-hours reading about (and writing to) explorers in the South Pole receives a penguin in the mail from one of those explorers. Since his work is over for the winter, he becomes very involved in the comfort and care of said penguin (and the eleven other penguins that quickly follow). In the end, he transforms his basement into an ice rink (an idea my daughter wholeheartedly supports, by the way), and spends more than his wife ever thought possible on fish and canned shrimp.I won't tell you how an out-of-work house painter manages to pay for all that (wouldn't want to spoil the ending), but I will say that the process is highly entertaining for all involved. I found myself looking forward to each night's installment of Mr. Popper nearly as much as The Four-Year-Old.Although I personally found the ending to be highly improbable, The Four-Year-Old saw nothing at all the matter with it--except for that little bit of unpleasantness with the policemen and firemen--and has spent many a happy evening reenacting the finale in the bathtub. And now, if you will excuse me, I need to go read Mr. Popper's Penguins to The Four-Year-Old again. I promised her I would as soon as I finished writing the review.(Excerpted from review posted on my blog: Caterpickles-Scientific & Linguistic Engagement with a 4-Year-Old Mind)
