About the Author
Jerry Hopkins originally wrote The Hula in 1982. He has written 36 books in all, including the bestselling Jim Morrison biography No One Here Gets Out Alive (#1, New York Times); Elvis In Hawai'i; and Don Ho: My Music, My Life. A longtime editor of Rolling Stone, he lived in Hawai'i from 1976 to 1993 and now resides in Thailand. Rebecca Kamili'ia Erickson was a contributing editor for Na Ki'i Pohaku: A Hawaiian Petroglyph Primer and Hawaii Island Artists and Friends of the Arts. A longtime editor for Guitar Player magazine, she lived in Hawai'i from 1978 to 2011 and now resides in Austin, Texas where she continues to write about its thriving music culture. Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman is Professor of American Culture and Music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and director of the Great Lakes Hula Academy. Born in Honolulu, she attended Kahuku Elementary School, Kalani High School, and the University of Hawai'i, then completed the Ph.D. at Harvard. The author of Sacred Hula: The Historical Hula ' Âla'apapa (1998), she is widely respected for her research on historical sources of Hawaiian music and hula. In 2010 2011, she was the Dai Ho Chun Distinguished Visiting Chair in the College of Arts and Humanities at University of Hawai'i at Mânoa.

Altho this is a reprint of the first edition, it doesn't have the most crucial pages that were in the first edition - namely charts of Kumu Hula pedigree and the small biographies of the notable Kumu Hula mentioned in the book. This is not mentioned in the write up. I have a first edition so i was able to compare page for page.:Below is the description for this 2nd edition:" The Hula was originally written by Jerry Hopkins in 1978, with assistance from Rebecca Kamili'ia Erikson, and it has been a significant narrative on the dance form ever since. This is a very disappointing new edition of the original 1982 Hopkins version. It’s missing the crucial and informative biographies found in the original, the text has been changed in many places, and a number of photographs deleted. The page references in the index are completely erroneous, all linking to the wrong pages, making it problematic as a worthwhile resource. The 1982 version is far superior in all facets.
I bought this book for the cover! No brainer. It's simply gorgeous. The chapters cover hula history, transitions, influences over time. There are also some really nice photos covering these different eras. A comprehensive timeline of this sacred art. Well done! This one is a real keeper.
If you think Hula is just a dance Hawaiians teach to visitors you are mistaken. This book explains thecomplex history of the sacred dance, its development and importance within Hawaiian culture. It is beautifullyexplained and the pictures are lovely.
I purchased this as a gift for a friend and she was happy with it. It is a high quality book and contains a lot of information regarding the history of the Hula. My only complaint was that without a dust jacket, the book appears much like a textbook (which may be its original purpose?).
Enjoying this book. It is great to know the history of the hula.
This is a lovely book with a wealth of history and beautiful illustrations, it is a book that you can just pick and browse and still immerse yourself in the wonderful culture of the Hula.
A student of the hula or any dancer of same should have this wonderful book. A true gen of the art of Hula.
