The Joyita was a 69-foot boat with an interesting history that set out from Apia, Samoa in October, 1955 on a 48-hour voyage. There were 25 people on board. Five weeks later, the Joyita was found semi-submerged, six hundred miles off course and with no one on board. A careful investigation was made of the vessel and a commission of inquiry determined what had happened to the derelict. The commission could only label the disappearance of the passengers and crew as inexplicable. Mr. Wright has done a first rate job investigating the case. In general, he accepts the findings of the commission and dismisses pirates, vengeful Japanese, Russian submarines, freak waves and other flotsam and jetsam. But what did happen to the vanished people? He offers a solution which fails the plausibility test. It requires one to believe that the crew and passengers rejected the experienced captain's assurance that the vessel was virtually unsinkable (cork built into the boat made this so) and abandon ship for inadequate rafts, killing the captain for good measure. This won't do. It is instructive to compare the 2007 disappearance of the three man crew from the Kas II off the coast of Australia. In that case, there was sufficient evidence for the coroner to construct a highly plausible narrative as to what happened. The reader is left thinking either the coroner's solution or some very similar scenario is what happened. The Joyita permits no such finding: the judgment of the commission stands. The disappearance of the unlucky 25 remains inexplicable.
